Dragon Age: Origins
Nov 02nd, 2009, 3:16pm

I figured I'd start a new, fresh thread for all things Dragon Age: Origins, seeing as it's coming TOMORROW!  Hooray!

I'm reading all the non-spoiler reviews I can, and all so far seem to praise it.  There's a comment in one positive review I've read that's rather concerning to me:

"...Enemies level up alongside you, which can be a little absurd if one dwells on it – a mere Captain of the Guard towards the end turns out to be several magnitudes of order more powerful than the first giant Ogre fought at the beginning..."

This, to me, sounds errily like the description of the monster leveling crap found in an unmodded game of Oblivion.  Hopefully, it's not as noticeable, with sewer rats having the power of the almighty by the end of the game.  But I'll reserve my irritation until I actually play it and can experience it for myself.

I'm looking forward to hearing from other folks who'll be playing DA:O...

Eeerk, enemies leveling with the player? *acquires a look of distaste* That's almost enough, I think, to prompt some second thoughts about this game... :/

I believe that I want to see earlier enemies becoming relatively weaker.  I want to be able to easily trounce that foe who so easily bested me previously.  If I do more side-quests than expected, then I want to be relatively more powerful - and in a game that, I imagine, presents levelling as an increase in direct power, I don't want that to refer only to increased tactical opportunities, I feel. :/

Dang, I'm sad to hear about the levelling choice, especially since it caused such a furore when this was done in Oblivion.  Don't devs listen to their market?

Well - it's too late for me to pull out of this one now...  I went and paid for my copy yesterday - they don't do refunds...

Boo! I'm envious..
Mine is only arriving on Friday.  (I'm hoping tho that it will come in early, and that if I call them Thursday evening, they'll say I can collect    Roll Eyes  )

Prelude - Tristan And Isolde
Fate, out of the deep sea's gloom, When a man's heart's pride grows great, And nought seems now to foredoom Fate,
Fate, laden with fears in wait, Draws close through the clouds that loom, Till the soul see, all too late,
More dark than a dead world's tomb, More high than the sheer dawn's gate, More deep than the wide sea's womb,
Fate.

Oh, I'll probably still get it - but that it a fairly large negative point to my mind, I think, and has to some degree spoiled my anticipation of the game.

I do hope that the story is what you say it is... <_<

Of course, trust you, Evil Ines, to defend a game with levelling enemies! ;P

Well, in regards to the enemy leveling thing, they did also say that it's done in such a way that it feels natural, but again I'll reserve judgement until I play it.

I've read both Dragon Age books, so if the story in the game is anywhere close to as engaging as the books were, it'll be phenomenal!

haha well to be honest that doesn't make much difference to me... I always tend to go to the options menu and change this button that makes wonders to that problem  Grin

And what button is that?  Do many games allow you to switch enemy-levelling off?

Heh, fair enough, although whether that affects the elements that I mentioned above (such as returning to a foe that bested you previously) would, I suspect, depend on how they implemented the difficulty scaling - presuming that they do have such a setting, of course (I'm not convinced that all do, but admit that it seems probable that there will be one in Dragon Age).

Don't get too complacent just assuming all games have an adjustable difficulty mode.  Some don't.  Drakensang is one example.

Now my game's arrival seems to have been delayed until Monday, btw...    Smiley

Nah, sorry - I didn't do that on purpose -it was just the first game that popped into my mind, because although i had found combat pretty easy enough in the introductory chapter, by the time I was in my third and fourth areas in the game, I was really finding myself having to redo some battles over and over again because they were so hard - in some of them all of my party members would die, every time.

Since I don't enjoy playing against such hard-to-beat odds, I had actually searched around for a difficulty setting, and found out that there isn't one.  I usually play my first playthrough of an RPG on the default setting, and see how it goes - if too hard, I'd set it easier, and less often, higher if applicable.

I'm not shy to admit that with Drakensang, I would definitely have set it to "Easy" if I could have!
