Emergency Room install.exe file, please?
Oct 27th, 2009, 1:42pm

Some people at VOGONS have tried to help me to get Emergency Room (DOS) installed in DOSbox on my computer - but so far, no luck.

Apparently the game's install file may be defective/buggy (it locks up during the CD Speed Test) so I'll have to try replacing the game's original "install.exe" file with a working copy of this file.

If anyone here on JA has a working copy of Emergency Room (DOS), could you please email me a copy of the "install.exe" file?
Thanks.

I have copied the contents of the game's CD to a folder on my computer, mounted this folder as the A:\ drive in DOSbox, and shall attempt an install from this folder if I can get a new install file.

Can you create an ISO image of the CD? If so, how large is it?

I do have an ISO image of the CD - it's 537.4 MB. I created this off the original CD about a month ago.

Can I assume that you've mounted it as an image under DOSBox?  I was going to suggest you try to email the ISO (but that's not very ethical -- or legal... so...).

I'll see if I can find a  version for sale on ebay and take a peek at it.

If you've tried using ImgMount (under DOSBox) and it hasn't worked out - you might want to consider trying something like VirtualCloneDrive to mount the ISO (it's free).

That's correct - I tried doing this.

Can this be a last resort? Perhaps mail the original disc to you so you can try it out?

Are you suggesting that I buy that ebay copy (it's this version):

you find or are you going to buy it and test the game yourself?

Yes, I've tried mounting the ISO via ImgMount under DOSbox. How might Virtual Clone Drive help in this situation? How do I use Virtual Clone Drive under DOSbox (assuming it can be used with DOSbox)?

When I looked yesterday, I didn't see that one - I just purchased it.

With Virtual Clone Drive you just click on the ISO and select Mount (Virtual Clone) in the content menu (you can also right click the icon in the System Tray and do the same).

From that point you'll need to mount the Virtual CD drive just as if it were a physical device in DOSBox - (it's a long shot, but worth trying).

MOUNT D x:\ -t cdrom -ioctl  (Where x is the letter assigned to Virtual CloneDrive)

What do you mean, you didn't see "that" one, and you purchased it? What version of Emergency Room is it? Did you buy it in order to test it regarding the problem I am having installing it in DOSbox?

Ok, I d/l the Virtual Clone Drive, copied it to my netbook, but when I started to install it, I got this warning -

so I clicked on "stop the installation", yet it installed anyway - I hope this (virtual clone drive) isn't going to give me trouble like Nero Drive Speed did - yes, Inland, I'm back on GameBoomers under a different name, and I was the person who posted about Emergency Room in the glitches forum at GB (link) but that thread is now gone, so I'll just post this link to this thread about DOSbox game install (I'm the thread starter)
http://www.gameboomers.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/549605/Re:%20DOSbox%20gam...

On second thought regarding this Virtual Clone Drive you found for me, I'm afraid to give this a try (i.e. installer warning) so I went to my netbook's Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, > Virtual Clone Drive > Remove, and I uninstalled it - since 1) I don't want to take any chances with it messing up my system (like what happened with Nero Drive Speed), and 2) using this is a long shot but with very little chance of success. I'd want to go with testing the game you brought last night, Inland - we could have better luck with this.

I checked yesterday, and didn't see the game - but I did stumble on it today and purchased it (and yes, to give it a shot under DOSBox).

I'll let you know how it goes.

You can ignore the warning for Virtual CloneDrive (it's just windows nagging that the driver is uncertified).  Meaning they haven't blessed it with their approval (no big deal).

After my bad experience with Nero Drive Speed, I'm sort of leery of warnings like I got, but like I said, since trying Virtual Clone Drive has such a small chance of success, add my experience with Nero Drive Speed and my fearfulness, I think I want to pass on using Virtual Clone Drive, and I'd rather go with you giving that game you brought a shot in DOSbox.

(bump) Inland, did that Emergency Room game arrive at your house yet? Did you try it out in DOSbox yet?

Not yet, I'll check the box again today though.

Edit -

It was in the box today! I had the same issue as you under DOSBox, however... Virtual PC installed and played the game flawlessly in DOS (I've exported the VPC Hard Drive folder to DOSBox, and it also plays).

I'll email you a copy -

Here's the game under DOSBox -

Thank you so much, Inland! I got your email, I unzipped it, and first I tried mounting it as the a: drive in DOSbox & trying to install; next I tried this - (see image)

What exactly am I supposed to type in DOSbox to get the game going?

stumped

My DOSbox IRQ is 7.

The zip file is the installed  game directory, there’s no need to rerun Install. Just unpack it and copy the content to your DOSBox game folder.

The game runs from the ERI sub directory (Enter ERI once you’re there).

C:\DOSBox Root\LEGACY\ERI

Edit -

The image you posted (The DOSBox console) had me stumped for a second.  You entered:

CD LEGACY
CD ERI

And Then ER (not ERI) <-<< Try ERI

If you're ever unsure of the content of a specific directory, just enter DIR (the directory command).

See below -

Oh, and one last note - you must mount the CD under DOSBox as well (which is why I didn't feel bad about giving you the install folder).  The game won't play without the CD.

You mean the original physical CD, or the virtual CD?
I did not have the original CD in my external optical drive of my netbook when I tried your file that you emailed me.

This external optical drive is mounted as drive D under my netbook's DOSbox.

EDIT - I just tried running the game with the original (orange) CD in my netbook's external optical drive - I watched the intro sequence, all the way up to the sign-in screen but didn't sign in (instead, I exited DOSbox) because I wanted to let you know it worked - I can now play the game!

Either or - so long as the game finds the files (virtual or physical) on a drive, the game will play.
