Just finished it a couple of hours ago and I'm sure I'm gonna miss all that creepy and dark atmosphere. A few, very few times in my life, I had experienced nightmares due to a video game and to tell you the truth I won't miss for a sec these horrifying creatures that until now their screams ring in my ears making me turning my head all over the place. This game reveals for once more what an artist smn can be by making these incredible scenes and graphics that reminded me the awe I had the first time I saw 'Alien'. Its scenic and the surrounding area that shows how odd but charming is a thing called alien. I hope that a sequel is about to come because the ending did frightened me and troubled me. Love really is a miracle but at the same time is an illusion, too well hidden to be understood. The last sentence is what I understood watching the ending of this game-movie cause from time to time I wondered if I was watching a movie or playing a game. Believe me sometimes it's hard to differentiate.

(a piece of advice: play it loud.)

It sounds like you had a harrowing experience with this game, Taurnil. I'm in two minds: more curious, but more scared than ever, to try this game...  yet somehow, the games that disturb us the most are often the ones the we rate the most highly.  As long as it's disturbing in a fairly 'good' sense, -but sometimes a game/book/movie crosses the line and just becomes too gross to bear.

I don't know if you also have a limit like that, and if this game actually crosses that limit?

Prelude - Tristan And Isolde
Fate, out of the deep sea's gloom, When a man's heart's pride grows great, And nought seems now to foredoom Fate,
Fate, laden with fears in wait, Draws close through the clouds that loom, Till the soul see, all too late,
More dark than a dead world's tomb, More high than the sheer dawn's gate, More deep than the wide sea's womb,
Fate.

It doesn't cross any limit. The fact is that when you are fully engrossed in the story and the monster massacre, you will find that it is completely normal to experience such things in a spaceship, knowing that perhaps there is no coming back. I admit that the sounds of the monsters as you kill them and the grisly sight of the torn-apart beasts are most of the times nauseus but you realize during gameplay that this is actually stg that you must bear in order to survive so you continue playing trying to find the exit.

Hmm, still, the fact that the game actually gave you nightmares, does tell me something. And you're a guy who normally likes to play horror, so you should be used to scary stuff.  I actually wish Masher would also play it, and hear what he says. Didn't Xernosam also play this game? I wonder why he never visits us anymore.  Sad

Anyway, Taurnil, it does look like even though the game gave you nightmares, you regard it quite highly.

Just started playing this last night (Halloween), after a day with a virus problem, and have high hopes for some good scares. I'm playing using the keyboard and mouse with no problems thus far, though only finished the first level. Happy gaming.

What a game!! I thought Bioshock was good, this one definitely surpasses it in all aspects. It's scarier and takes place in space, what more could I ask for. I'm still playing by keyboard and mouse with no problem at all. I've read some complaints about using this control scheme but don't see a problem. Walking in the vacuum of space and zero gravity is awesome. If you like scary SciFi (will never give into using SyFy) shooter games, this one is a must play. Happy Gaming!

Potential caveat: I've heard (not played, admittedly; this is, as I recall, a part of what put my off of Dead Space in the first place) that it's gory horror.

I mention this for those who, like me, may be fond of horror, but less so of heavy gore.

Yes, there is dismembering of the creatures with your weapons and lots of blood. However, that does not bother me in this type of game. It's either you or them in a fight and adds to the atmosphere. It's only a game, but that's just me.

That's fair enough - I believe that I just wanted it mentioned for, as I said, those who might enjoy horror, but not of the bloodier type; against the possibility, I suppose, of one such reading that it's a good horror (I'm not disputing that, I add for clarity!), but not of what type, and so end up buying it to their eventual displeasure.

As I said, a caveat. Wink

Thanks for the mention of gory violence.  I have trouble with enacting violence myself, but computerized third-party violence is not that affecting to me....if the story is worth it and the violence is not gratuitous.

Somewhere along the line from the 80's to now I've lost my zeal for shooters when I pull the trigger.  Have no idea why.  But cutscenes and evidence of violence (like in Sherlock vs Jack) certainly intensifies the plot.

Anyhoo, thanks for all info.  Guess this ain't for me, eh?

@ Thaumaturge and Halcyon: I definitely respect your position on this. For me, a well done survival horror game is one of my favorite genres. I guess because I know it's just a game, which allows me to get totally engrossed in it, and then I get the shite scared out of me. It's the rush I tell ya. Happy gaming.

Okay, so if I'm willing to get my feet we (in blood) would this be a good horror genre game to dive into?

I did have some interest in this one myself especially after Taurnil posted some screenshots a few months ago. The price (amazon) has come down but the reviews haven't changed and I doubt it will run well (graphically) on an older XP machine.

For what it's worth, if you count Silent Hill 3 then there is at least one example of a survival horror that I rather enjoyed, as I recall. ;)

I suppose that for me it's more a matter of gore having a different effect on me - I think that it less frightens me than perhaps squicks me (I'm not sue of my use of that word here; I'm tempted to use "disgusts", but I think that that carries a connotation of moral disgust that is, I believe, inaccurate here).

However, this is somewhat besides my original purpose in posting here, I believe - and indeed, each to their own.  I don't believe that I mean to say that you shouldn't enjoy it! ^_^
