Title: Gay characters? Post by Wolfboy on Nov 25th, 2002, 7:20pm Hey... Because adventure games are typically made by and for more mentally mature people, we tend to be a lot more accepting of characters that are homosexual in them. I mean, imagine the backlash if the action gamers found out that Duke Nukem liked men >.< But anyway, I've been thinking about video game characters from any genre, and realised that adventure games really do have the largest number of homosexual characters. What gay or bi people, from any game, can you think of? I'll start the bidding at.... Trevor Barns (of Phantasmagoria 2) |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Aya_Brea on Nov 25th, 2002, 7:36pm i don't think she was gay, but Riana Rouge had an FMV that was...... ahem :o :P :P my vote goes to Hana and Rain (IIRC the names), the girls from Fear Effect 2 |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Akril on Nov 25th, 2002, 7:59pm One of the police officers from The Longest Journey remarked that he was a homosexual, but there was nothing sterotypical about him at all, even though he was meant to be a humorous character for his comment. Also, a woman from the same game was a homosexual, but she was much more open and sometimes talked a good deal and revealed a lot more than the player would have liked to know about her sex life. But at least she never goes too far... Akril |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by getstuck on Nov 25th, 2002, 8:03pm How about Baron Von Glower from GK 2? |
|
Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Harriet on Nov 25th, 2002, 8:05pm There has been speculation that the Baron in Gabriel Knight 2 was gay. I have read this in several places but haven't a clue if Jane and troops wrote him that way or not. He was very old-world and elegant. Perhaps that is why some people guessed that he was gay. Other than that I can't think of another character that is or might be gay. My personal opinion is that straight or gay - is fine with me. Harriet@JA |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Harriet on Nov 25th, 2002, 8:07pm Oh yes. The inn keeper in The Longest Journey. Harriet@JA |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Wolfboy on Nov 25th, 2002, 8:12pm Von Glower has the same thing going on as all the vampires in Anne Rice books. We don't know, we don't care because they're lovely either way ;) Seems to be a lot from TLJ... |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by MichalN on Nov 25th, 2002, 8:14pm wrote on Nov 25th, 2002, 8:05pm:
I don't think he was gay (why'd he have this pretty young lady with him at the theater?). But there was another man in the GK2 hunting club who was almost certainly gay (Herr Preiss I think it was). Quote:
Yep. Often you wouldn't even know - it's not like most games spend a lot of time on the characters' sexual orientation ;D |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by jamarchand on Nov 25th, 2002, 8:57pm Baron Von Glover (Peter Lucas) was, definetivelly, a gay caracter. The game told this, in explicit way. |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Red on Nov 25th, 2002, 8:58pm In The Longest Journey, the landlady, they even discuss her and her friend towards the beginning of the game. Which is interesting. Another board I go to had a couple of people upset with the language in the first few chapters but never made a comment on the Landlady. I, on the other hand, didn't think about the swearing or the sexuality at all, just happily enjoyed the game. |

Can you elaborate please? I must have missed it. Can you also please explain why von Glower had that sexy blonde if he was gay? |
|
Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by getstuck on Nov 25th, 2002, 9:19pm Perhaps he was bisexual - anyway, the sexy blonde was for Gabe, wasn't she? |

That's a possibility. Quote:
Don't forget she was with von Glower in the theatre. And I didn't get the impression she was exclusively for Gabe. |

the homo-erotic undertones he had towards Gabriel reminded me very much of characters from Ann Rice's Vampire Chronicles (speaking of which, I'd loooovvveee a game based on those! the possibilities...) |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by GrammarTroll on Nov 25th, 2002, 10:30pm Don't forget the lead character's best friend in Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh. I think Von Glower was polysexual. |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Wolfboy on Nov 25th, 2002, 10:33pm Not too surprisingly, in the novelisations of GK1 and 2, Jane does accentuate both sides of the sexual overtones, and keeps both on a very subtle even keel. It's quite unique to read in such a manner. How about characters in older games? |

Could you prove that the blondie was a woman? To me should be a transvestite! ;D ;D ;D |

So now Gabriel is gay too? Oh my! ;D |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by justG on Nov 26th, 2002, 12:18am Runaway: A Road Adventure. Nothing subtle about it here, you meet 3 drag queens in the desert, whose bus has broken down. IIRC, there's even mention of Priscilla (Queen of the Desert) in the game - li'l tip o' the hat there. Ya. I know. Being a transvestite doesn't mean one's gay, but these queens were falling all over themselves to get to a hunk of a thug. ;D You spend quite a bit of time with them; it's a greatly enjoyable and thoroughly amusing segment of the game. |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by djsouza on Nov 26th, 2002, 1:30am I can only remember 2: - Gary, the towel attendant from Larry 6; - Peter the Purser, the ship attendant from Larry 7. |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Judy on Nov 26th, 2002, 3:26am I remember Peter from LSL7, but does anyone remember that flamboyant scarecrow from Toonstruck? I loved him! ;D |
|
Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Giuseppe on Nov 26th, 2002, 4:43am Also from Larry 6, Cav the exercise instructor was gay and she turned the country western singer and Kalalau from LSL2 and 3 turned gay after being with Lar Lar... Gary Fairy was hilarious... |
|
Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by alkis21 on Nov 26th, 2002, 5:45am The Leisure suit Larry games had plenty of homosexual characters, remember that your wife left you in the beginning of LSL2 for another woman, plus the gymnastics instructor in LSL6 was a lesbian. Ok I tend to remember female homosexuals more.. :) A few years ago, there was a guy (?) in the adventure newsgroup who started a crusade to persuade people that Gabriel Knight was gay and that he should dump Grace. :D Anyway, what was I saying? More lesbians in adventure games please! |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Revliskci on Nov 26th, 2002, 6:50am Woo! I just remebered Laura Bow 2 after reading that SEX topic. In the toilet, in the speakeasy, there was this woman (a prostitue?) who came onto Laura in no uncertain terms :o |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Tally Ho on Nov 26th, 2002, 7:07am Of course von Glower is gay - there never was a hint of a doubt. When asked about this in an interview, Peter wouldn't elaborate on it, but he certainly didn't deny it. He said something like "Let's just leave that one alone, shall we?" :-X Someone mentioned Preiss at the hunt club - did it occur to anyone that the entire membership of that club might share something in common besides hunting? Other characters: in GK1, the shop owner next door who coveted and finally bought the painting by Wolfgang. |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Ravensbreed on Nov 26th, 2002, 9:42am wrote on Nov 26th, 2002, 7:07am:
Actually Preiss isn't gay, in fact his problem is that he likes women a little too much. Remember when Gabe interviews him in the Hunt club he recognises in Gabriel the same, ah, womanizing tendancies. I'm not sure about Von Glower. I assumed that he was bisexual. The game certainly suggest that he and Ludwig got fairly close. Not that it's got to do with anything, but its not Wolfgang's painting in GK1. It's Gabriel's father's painting. Gabe is the writer, his father the artist and his Grandfather the poet. |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Tally Ho on Nov 26th, 2002, 9:56am wrote on Nov 26th, 2002, 9:42am:
Oops that's right. Wolfgang was the grandfather; we never actually meet the father. The character's name was Bruno, if I recall correctly, and he owned a flower-shop. (Not that this has much to do with anything either. ;D |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Mr_2_u on Nov 26th, 2002, 10:05am Dont forget the two lesbians in Gabriel Knight 3 Lady (whatever her name was) and that blonde haired woman (I forget her name) |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Tally Ho on Nov 26th, 2002, 10:32am Oh yeah - Lady Howard and Estelle. Joined at the hip, so to speak. |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by FlameBoy on Nov 26th, 2002, 4:03pm Lady Howard and Estelle were lesbians? Am I stupid for not realising that? |
|
Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by justG on Nov 26th, 2002, 5:24pm Levittown? I took a traditional cel animation class there, taught by an ex-WB animator. That was waaay cool, and lots of fun ;D |

Nah, not stupid at all. It was put across in a very classical British manner, you probably wouldn't have noticed unless you know quite a lot about how English people are ;) |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by justG on Nov 27th, 2002, 2:38am wrote on Nov 26th, 2002, 6:29pm:
Yeah, it was quite a stroke of luck. I don't remember how I came across the info for it, but I didn't know anything about the guy at the time. I had pipe dreams of one day working at Pixar (or ILM, or Digital Domain, or Dreamworks, or... ) and thought a cel animation class would be a good idea. It really was a lot of fun, and I got a 2-second pencil test on VHS out of it, which is kinda cool :D |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by gamergal on Nov 27th, 2002, 12:18pm Broken Sword 2 The lady at the Quarramonte mining company looked like she was seriously checking out Nico to me!!! Of course, she did have a male secretary at work in his undies, so maybe she swings both ways? |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Unity on Nov 28th, 2002, 3:51am IIRC, Jane Jensen herself has stated that she thinks of von Glower as "omnisexual", whatever that's supposed to mean. ;) |

Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Tally Ho on Nov 29th, 2002, 7:53am I have a friend who (mostly) doesn't eat meat. If someone asks if he is a vegetarian, he replies, "I'm an Opportunivore", meaning he will eat whatever happens to be available. Cute. So maybe we should call von Glower an "Opportunisexist." ;D ;D ;D |
|
Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by SunshineSlayer on Nov 29th, 2002, 4:49pm I'll chime in with my Von Glower thoughts. I think he was gay, or at least bisexual. It is certain that Ludwig was gay, and he and Von Glower spent an awful lot of time together. ;) There were also some subtle undertones that Gabriel! himself has some homoerotic tendancies. :) As for other characters, has anyone played the Voyeur FMV adventure games? Pretty much every person is omnisexual. :) |
|
Title: Re: Gay characters? Post by Inie on Nov 29th, 2002, 6:24pm I see Von Glower as the ultimate manipulator. Someone who is prepared to do anything neccesary to achieve his goal. Whether this says something about his sexual orientation, I'm not sure. wrote on Nov 29th, 2002, 4:49pm:
Oh dear, where does that leave Sam & Max? |
