Fields of Green and Planets of Orange

Epitasis is an exploratory adventure being developed by Lucas Govatos who hails from Annapolis, Maryland. He has been working as an independent game developer since 2009 and Epitasis is his brainchild. Funk Fiction (composed and remixed by Pejman Roozbeh) will be providing the game’s soundtrack.

Lucas has been working on Epitasis for about a year. What began with an idea for an art project has evolved into a mysterious and beautiful world to explore. Lucas is working with this vision in mind: “As an artist, I want the game to be as beautiful as possible, colorful and vivid as I see it in my mind. As a computer scientist, I want the game to be logical and puzzling, forged together with knowledge you must learn only by experiencing it yourself.”

In my own quest for understanding, I had to look up the word “epitasis.” I found that it is a term from classical drama and references the middle act of a play in which the main action or climax occurs. It stems from a Greek word which implies “intensity” or “stretching tighter.” It is an interesting choice for a game title and I’m sure there is a story there somewhere!

In the meantime, an alpha demo build is available and, to augment development, a Kickstarter campaign was launched in mid-July with the goal of raising $11,650 by August 20th.

Technology in Ruins

With a focus on discovery and puzzle-solving, the game is being built with the Unreal Engine and will be fully 3D. You encounter a strange portal, which you enter and find yourself on “the other side” in an alien landscape with remnants of a past civilization. Your job is to get home and to do so, you must solve mysteries on this (and other) strange planets and learn about the cultures that once occupied these spaces. There will be relics to uncover, alien technology to use and other portals for travel to other locations. Your only assistance comes in the form of an ancient Drone Buddy, abandoned by its owner long ago.

If I were to guess, Epitasis may turn out to be a game in the style of The Talos Principle  or Aporia: Beyond the Valley . The artwork and music put forth so far show promise, and Just Adventure will continue to monitor the progress of this game. We wish Lucas and Pejman success with their Kickstarter campaign. If all goes according to plan, we’ll be able to experience this alien adventure in the summer of 2018 for Windows, Mac and Linux.
