Broken Age from indie developer Double Fine made records when in 2012, it surpassed its Kickstarter goal of $400,000 to raise a then eye-popping $3.3 million. The marquee status of Tim Schafer, creater of Grim Fandango, helped Broken Age smash all expectations, and propelled the crowd-funding model for game development into the mainstream. Needless to say, the game has generated intense anticipation among adventure gamers, and the wait to play Broken Age is nearing an end.
Act I of this two Act game is to be released on January 28th, although Kickstarter backers gain access a full two weeks early on January 14th. As for Act II, Double Fine has left the date indeterminate, stating only that it will be later in 2014.
About the Game
Broken Age is a point-and-click adventure following a young boy and girl leading parallel lives. The girl is to be sacrificed by her village to a monster, but she decides to take matters into her own hands. Meanwhile, on a spaceship, the boy lives a solitary existence with only a computer AI, that functions as his virtual mother, for company. He longs for more. "Adventures ensue."
A Little Controversy
Double Fine created a bit of controversy when it tried to place a review embargo until January 28th, but quickly back-tracked, citing in a Twitter post - "We decided to go ahead and lift the review embargo for Broken Age. Too much excitement."
