Aagh! Decided to play the Longest Journey again but am now stuck on my second visit to Arcadia - I need to rescue Bird from the clutches of the cups man,  but cannot for the life of me remember how it is done?

I'm probably forgetting something totally obvious that I've missed but I don't want to start ploughing through a walkthrough. Anyone able to refresh my memory?

Use the magnetic screwdriver to see which cup moves when it shows the close-up.  He will accuse you of cheating, so trade out the "magic wand" (the screwdriver) and, if I remember correctly, he will then give you a "fabulous prize", which is Bird.
My name is Bethany and I'm the daughter of Gamergal/Michelle.

I (eventually) did manage to figure it out (I hadn't noticed that the screwdriver was magnetized) but thank you for your help all the same. This should teach me to  examine my inventory items more closely!
