Lately I've been seeing a number of home made games that people are selling, as opposed to the free downloadable games like Larry Vales.  I knew about Comer, and then hadn't heard about any other games, and suddenly I find there's Dark Fall, Rhem,  and The Sydney Mystery, although Dark Fall is the only one that is indistinguishable from more professionally made products.  I guess one could also include Bad Milk in the homemade category, but it's sort of its own thing.

So, have any other home made games come out in the last year or so of note?

Lets see, I know about the following:
Dark Fall
Passage
Cracking the Conspiracy
Eye of the Kraken

Then there are a couple soon to be released:
Harvest
Full Moon In San Francisco

I don't have a big one yet, but I hope to have one soon. On my site you can find Last Rose in a Desert Garden, which a lot of people hate and a lot of people love. It's big in it's own kind of way, but nothing compared to some other games. Still, more than a hundred thousand downloads is not bad for a homemade (and not professional at all, IMHO) experimental adventure game which takes 5 minutes to finish
.
The next game I'm going to relase (yes, I AM going to release it) is The Song of Falling Night, which I hope is going to be big. It took a fricking year to complete. Now all I need is the music ... damn  music... but we'll be there soon.
Plus, there's something else, but I refuse to talk about it, because it's my own little insane secret.

BTW, I just read the review of Eye of the Kraken (which I have never played, but I can remember the days when it was still in development). If I ever release a commercial (shareware) game, I can see myself getting an F+.

Hey Jonas,

I played Last Rose In A Desert Garden and liked it!  Good job.  You say you would get an F+ for a homemade commercial release?  Well, I would definitely get an F-- on mine so don't feel so bad!  You should give it a shot if you are really motivated to do so!

Deleted UserI just remembered another one:

Magnetic from Peter Hewitt in Australia

The same Peter Hewitt who designed Xiama.

You can access both of these games through the JA Schedule of Releases.

Hi,

I am an independent developer, and just released my latest game, Cherokee Trails. (http://pharosgames.com/cherokee)

My first love was the adventure games.  But I started trying to go more mainstream rpg, and educational, which was possibly a mistake if I actually want to sell very many of these. :-)

I think I'm a little too weird to sell to schools and a little too mainstream for the people who like fantasy adventures.

I'm actually thinking of doing a new version of this game that has more fantasy puzzles, etc, etc.

Jonas, I think your screenshots look really good for the new game.  Good luck.  :-)

Hi all,
Bad Milk is an independently produced game.   Here's the site - http://www.dreamingmedia.com/cgi-bin/index.phtml .  It won the grand prize in the Independent Games Festival (IGF) in 2002 - http://www.igf.com/ .

I like the game a lot. It's an unusual adventure game, for how it looks, not quite as much for how it plays.   One of the two developers has an art background (MFA from Yale), so it helps if you happen to like contemporary art. I think of it as a cross between a game and an electronic art piece.   Lest you be put off by what I said, the game is great to look at, and it's also really funny.  The maze, which you play in the dark (!) is a real trip, I've never had such a good time while in the midst of a maze puzzle.  You can download a screensaver and demo for free.  The files are large, so it's helpful to have broadband.

I hope that didn't sound too much like an advertisement.  I don't have any association with the game developers, I just happen to like the game.

Regards, mszv

Deleted UserHello Pharos Games,

I put your game, Cherokee Trails, in the Schedule of Releases several months ago.  I didn't realize that you had released it and I will make that change in the column next Friday.

Please make sure to let me know when you have another game ready to talk about and I will add it to the Schedule also.

And please continue to post here at the JA Forum.  There are other independent developers here and you probably can trade war stories.

First, I am glad to hear that Cherokee Trails is available now. John Bell does one of the main voices for that - doesn't he?

Jonas, I downloaded your first game - purely because the title was so beautiful. I loved the game.

I am looking forward to The Song of Falling Night and again - what a intriguing title. Reminds me of Ray Bradbury. I would not even think that you would ever receive an F or anywhere near that for your efforts. If you do - must be a cranky gamer.

Thanks, Harriet!  I really do appreciate it.  Yes, I have been rather out of touch.  I don't know why... maybe fear of criticism? haha

Also, maybe just because I've been so very busy up until this past week or so finishing the game, and trying to get a good demo together...  uurgghh

Well, anyway, I have been very involved with the shareware authors through the ASP, but really I probably have much more in common with people here, and other sites like this.

Hi, Laura, and thanks for remembering.  John Bell has a wonderful voice, and he did several characters: the wolf, a bear, an eagle, an old hunter, a Cherokee shaman.  John is a great talent!

Take care

I like "Verschollen Auf Lost Island" aka "Missing At Lost Island" it is funny not too hard and has some decent graphics. Don't know for certain it is home made, but I think so...

Thanks. I'm glad you liked Last Rose
.
The Song of Falling Night has gone through all hell (as Harriet knows), but it will be released ... even though propably the world will end the day after.

This isn't a "big" game, per se, but have you ever heard of Reality On The Norm?  It's a series of games that all take place in the same town.  Each game is written by different a different author, so the quality and style differ from game to game.  Individually, the games are quite short - but there are 25 of them available so they should keep you fairly busy for awhile.

Anyone can contribute a game to the series.  So if you want to contribute feel free!  I myself have written two  - "Repossessor" and "The Postman Only Dies Once."
