Yay! Let's discuss whether Sennebec should really do this... or whether Betje should accept! Anyone got a match?

On a more serious note, I think this is a good sign and I hope more people will take this as an example (including myself).

I couldnt agree more. Sometimes things just come out wrong when its the written word, I think alot of things said in "that thread" just got a little out of control, without really meaning to.
( at least I THINK so )

You apologize to Alkis for "bringing out the worst in some people", you apologize to me for "insulting my integrity"?

Sure, sennebec, apology accepted, everything is fine again, no problem, let's be friends, been playing any great adventures lately?

---------
I'll take a leaf out of your book and edit this post. I won't delete anything, but add that I may have been too harsh. If you were sincere, I'm sorry. Anyway, you do deserve the benefit of the doubt

currently playing "bad mojo" and "of light and darkness"

in regards to your comment that i ...

have nothing, absolutely nothing to say on the subject of adventures.

...i agree that i don't participate too much in the adventure discussions for two reasons...
1) usually somebody else has already said what i was thinking
2) and i'm still a relative newbie, having only starting with "myst" in '95...
i have no conception of text adventures...
but now, i am the proud owner of close to 120 games...
of which i've played at least 80...
i'm here on this forum, first and foremost, to learn about the adventure games i know nothing about,
how to tweak my system when need be (i'm a computer spaz)
but...
i'm also here to talk to people from all over the world, of all ages, about anything, and perhaps, in my old age, learn something new

still gaming...

BacardiJim just let loose a massive one directed towards me on the adventure game forum.  Something about me being half his age and calling him misinformed really got him going.

Gosh, what a relief!

I was beginning to think you were all too sweet and perfect.  Just normal folk here then.

Daryl, I begin to think we'll fit in here!

I do like a bit of passion now and then.  So long as you kiss and make up afterwards.   :-*

"

i cringe when i read stuff like that.

it would be unfair of me to demand you stop saying stuff that offends me, and the disabled people who use this site- but please have some consideation. i understand how this word in particular has become inbeded in to casual usege but it still has the power to hurt people and drive away potental members.

i dont want to sound as if im telling you off becase im your moral superior or something crazy like that- let this be an open message to everyone- these words hurt people. my girlfriend a cerabel pausy (except the one she has is spelt right
) and i believe words like this do have a negitive impact on those with disabilities. i would imagine ist pretty unlikely you would say "oh that [insert name] is such a cancer victim" or "im such a spinabifida sufferer for not remembering to take out the rubbish". and i truely bet there is not a nasty partical in your body and personality and you are a really nice person to know, but things like this have an affect on the way others see you, if you see what i mean.

love kieran
Its boring, there isn't any action at all. You walk around picking up things and using them with other items. You walk around and use the item on something. Walking around and talking to people is really lame, what about some shooting or something~APuddleduck&&

Well I can’t speak for whoever has upset you over using the term ‘computer spaz’ but I really sincerely doubt any offense was intended. Gee it seems like even a pretty innocuous phrase but I can see how upset you are over it. You know, there are tons of little sayings like that lying around for each of us to trip over without looking , never expecting them to catch our shoes and cause us to stumble into the unsuspecting lap of a hypersensitive individual.

“Computer Geek” is a compliment to anyone who is literate with computers. Gee, one would think it would be an insult since ‘geek’ didn’t use to be something someone strove to be. How many geeks on this site (and there are quite a few
) are now offended without me ever intending to hurt their feelings? …just kidding folks about you being a geek, unless you are….you would know who you are better than me

Oops, and I just used “hypersensitive” so now anyone with *hyper* tension  or *sensitive* bowels are put off now, too

You see my point? I am not criticizing your comment and would never try to hurt anyone’s sensibilities and my point of responding (which I probably shouldn’t be doing since I don’t want to further upset you) is just to say, hey I understand.

But - and isn’t ‘but’ a challenging way to start a sentence …Reminds me of the old Stevie Wonder song from Songs in the Key of Life “I’ve always come to the conclusion that BUT is the way, of asking for permission to lay something heavy on one’s head” (music ‘warps’ as the turntable is slowed and then sped up)……

But you have a very daunting task ahead of you to rewrite common cultural slang. Your comment is very thought provoking and reveals how insensitive people, including myself, can be without even realizing it. Can I apologize in advance of my saying something wrong and just let you know I didn’t mean it? Or better yet, you can help me out be pointing out to me when I trip up, unsuspectingly.

Thanks psbayfire. I really learn a lot on this forum.

dear psybafire...

i realize that you are talking to me for using the word "spaz"...
please know that i meant no harm... and just keep in mind, that i was referring to myself...

my boyfriend happens to be an amputee... b/k left leg...
he refers to himself as...
stumpie...
mr. spaz...
captain hook (he's a fishing boat charter captain)...

think about having a conversation with a blind person,
and let's say you're discussing politics...
things get heated and you say... "can't you see that..."
of course the blind person cannot see...
but i hope that the blind person will realize that that phrase was not meant literally...

do you think that if i had referred to myself as an "ignorant dumb f*ck" that all the rest of the IDF's would have taken it personally ?

am i making any sense ?
i sure hope so, because i would never intend to hurt anyone's feelings...

how can you expect the world to edit casual conversation 100% of the time ?
as daryl said...
you have a very daunting task ahead of you to rewrite common cultural slang

i'm so sorry for having offended you... it was not my intention...

still gaming...

I looked up the word 'spaz' while reading sennes earlier post, it said "One who is considered clumsy or inept."

Now I looked it up again and this time I also looked up 'inept' to be sure I've got the right definition of the word. It said "not apt or fitting; inappropriate"

The conclution I got to is tha Senne concider herself to be clumsy/inappropriate with computers.

And you're right psybafire, it's not a suitable word at all.

oh god!  the Star Trek world is closer than I thought.  All this ultra political correctness makes communication very dull and unspontaneous.  How can we ever say anything if we're too afraid of upsetting a stranger who may be listening?

Psybafire - lighten up.  I wear glasses and had to contend with daily teasing about being 4 eyes from the age of 2.  My name used to be Daley, gee, that went well with daily bread, etc, 'give us this daily,....

What I'm suggesting is that you develop a thicker skin.  This word 'spaz' is commonly used and isn't going to disappear just because you want it to.  If you allow words to have the power to hurt you, then you will reman constantly vulnerable to pain and upset all your life.
Accept that it is used unthinkingly and without malice and get over it.  Take the power into your own hands on NEVER allowing another person to insult you.  Not by silencing them, but by rendering yourself immune to the perception of insults.

I think however, had someone deliberately called YOU a spaz then you could safely assume they had no manners and wanted to inflict insult.  In this instance however, I think you are being unduly overly sensitive, and unreasonable by demanding someone else change their thoughts while making no corresponding effort to change your own reactions.

I firmly believe no one can insult me without my permission.  If I don't accept the malice behind the words, they don't press my buttons.  Try it.  It's empowering and you sound like you need a mental trick or two to get you through life.

Best wishes

I'm with Caroline. Words are just that, words. Especially in this case when no one even remotely intended any harm.

I too find the ability not to be insulted very useful. It drives certain people up the wall

I forgot my sig.

I just don't think "spaz" is that big of a deal because by definition it doesn't really refer to the disabled.  It refers to anyone who is clumsy, uncoordinated, etcetera.  If you want to complain about the usage of the word "retard" now that's another issue.  Even I am guilty of overusing that term and it is one I could legitimately see as being offensive because it refers specifically to the mentally handicapped.
