Hear, hear. Norton was only good at bloating my system and conflicting with software. IE wasn't quite was bad, but was slow enough. I stopped using both of those some years ago and never looked back.

Actually, the latest numbers that I have seen indicates that IE has far fewer users these days. Chrome is the most popular browser at 30.6%, I.E is at second place, at 22%, Firefox 3rd with 19.1%, Safari 4th with 15.1%

A later version of IE would be better than IE8. Remember that those old browsers don't get updated and thus security holes won't be plugged. Either that, or switch to any other major browser (Firefox, Chrome or Opera)

I tried IE9 last year but did not like the way the Favorites tab and subfolders displayed and worked. I "live" out of this tab and did not want to reach for it on the right side of the screen and have it snap back every time. IE9 was less configurable for my needs - but that is a general trend with all MS stuff in general it seems.
Tried Chrome but my fonts got all fuzzy and screwed up and the known fixes were not worth the effort. Tried FF some time ago but didn't grab me for some reason - can't even remember why, and I haven't tried Safari.

Safari is Mac only. Opera though is quite nice. A bit slow on the startup, but it is fast in general.

Here are the numbers from October of this year:
http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/11/firefox-dips-below-20-percent-chrome-falls-internet-explorer-gains/
IE - 54.13%
Firefox - 19.99%
Chrome is at 18.55%

Pingdom is the only one that gives stats by region, and according to it IE is the most popular browser in the US and Australia (Oceania), but nowhere else. Its statistics by region is from April though.

Haven't really used Chrome yet, (although it's sitting on my system) but one of the things i rather disliked about Google, is that it's a bit harder to customise, and tends to railroad you into choices based on their marketing practices.
Admittedly Google has nice features like the translate feature, but you can use the Google toolbar on top of IE 9as well.

Me, I've learned already to stay away from them - never use 'em.
In fact, in my Windows PC's I don't even use 'em. Use only either Firefox or Safari for Windows. Learned this at Barnes & Noble's cafe this past Summer 2012.
