So Halloween has just passed here in the states...

My wife took her young siblings out Trick or Treating and went to a party for their school. Both my wife and her siblings came home with their own sacks of candy. As she was digging through her stash she starts throwing unwanted pieces at me, one of which being Tootsie Rolls. "Aren't you a self-proclaimed chocaholic?" I asked, "I am but Tootsie Rolls are gross" she replied "they don't count as chocolate."

So here i am posting on JA calling out to our local chocolate addicts, you know who you are. What do you think?

We don't have American chocolate Down Under.  Our chocolate needs a higher melting point to cope with our weather so it's mostly made here.   I'd be inclined to trust your wife's instincts on this one.

Talking of Halloween though, my neighbour and her two children dressed as ghosts knocked on our door and took us by surprise.  Buying sweets to give to strangers' kids simply isn't part of our culture despite a concerted sales campaign by the supermarkets.  My neighbour knew this would be a problem so she was carrying around a jar of lollies which she intended to bestowed upon anyone who opened their doors.  Very strange.

According to wikipedia "The current U.S. ingredients of a chocolate Tootsie Roll are: sugarcorn syruppartially hydrogenated soybean oilcondensed skim milkcocoa wheysoya lecithin, and natural and artificial flavors."

Cocoa whey is never ever used in real 'chocolate' so i wouldn't call a tootsie roll chocolate.

White chocolate already is borderline chocolate as it only contain cocoa butter.

...

Halloween wasn't celebrated in my country until a few years ago, not until we realised it was another excuse to get presents, party and eat lots of sweets and chocolate .

I would classify Tootsie Rolls under the more general category of candy since you've got your choices of chocolate flavored Tootsie Rolls, vanilla flavored Tootsie Rolls and even fruit flavored Tootsie Rolls. No different really than say chocolate cookies or chocolate ice cream.

Same here. Halloween is actually the only "dress-up" holiday that we have here, apart from during Easter, when really young children dress up like this:

and ask for candy.

To be honest, Tootsie Rolls barely count as candy, let alone chocolate. It's a "chocolate flavored" candy, sort of like cough drops are "cherry flavored". Truly they taste nothing alike.

The deciding word on what is and what isn't chocolate should always go to a woman.  Trust me, we have the hormones that tell us what quality of chocolate we've just been given.

... BELCH! Tootsie Rolls are *not* proper chocolate. They're chewy little brown turds, not crisp to the tooth, melt-in-your-mouth Belgian chocolates. And the very thought of chocolate-flavored beer... POOT! ... so sorry...please excuse...

Mr. Mumbles... make silent your apertures. This is a relatively new board, with nice people. The long-time posters are sick of your antics and lack of bodily control. Even Bobo learned to control himself ...eventually.

... yeah. Bobo boarded with Princess Mighty Pirate Caroline during his formative years and seemed to have learned some manners. PHOO! ...see? I can't help it. It comes and... FWEEP! ...goes. Pardon.

Whatever, Mumbles. Bobo rang and said he violently hurled at the idea of Fruit-flavoured Tootsie Rolls.
