The game industry seem to currently be in a phase where they revive/revisit old games. We have the upcoming X-com (looks great, and the demo left me wanting more), and we also had the recent Syndicate and soon there will be a Doom 3 remake/update.

So what games would you like to see re-made & updated?

One of the big ones for me is the classic 4X-ish strategy game Emperor of the Fading Suns

This game was pretty good as it was, but it had some major flaws as well, which I think could be lessened at least with a modern re-make.

EotFS was a deep game. You had a ground strategy part somewhat similar to civilization, where you would build structures, move troops and so on. And there was a lot to keep in mind here, in terms of how you build things, in order to maximize resource income.

But you were not limited to ground movement. This game also had space travel, you could move between planets and colonize them.

Then there was the research. The game had a pretty big tech tree, much like Civ (though obviously more sci-fi like in nature)

There were also 4 neutral factions that you had to keep an eye on. The church, which would sometimes prohibit certain tech that they considered heretical, and who had a massive fleet, in case someone decided to mess with them, the league, who you could trade with (or rob), the symbiots, who were a form of alien parasite, that could turn into a huge threat to everyone, in case they were left unchecked, and the Vau, another alien race, more interested in trading for map information than fighting (but nothing other than their huge fleet stopped you from declaring war on them).

And the game was not about exterminating everyone else, it was about getting elected emperor, so you had to keep good relations with at least some of the opponents.

And as the game was based on the pen & paper RPG Fading Suns and its universe, it had a lot of well written backstory (the game was actually made by the same company that made the pen & paper RPG)

Sadly the AI was not the sharpest tool in the box. One strategy known as "tech dumping" was to just research a prohibited tech, and then give it to an AI opponent who was closer to the church's home planets. The church would then destroy that faction, and wear itself down in the process. The AI could also get confused over minor things, and never really produced or researched things according to is current needs. It also had issues with any choke points that could form, where it could not move all its units through a single area in one turn (space was particularly tricky here, as the stacking limit for space ships in any given system would sometimes make it impossible for the AI to invade other planets once it had a decent fleet)

Also, the videos don't work on modern OS's, though if you find a way to make the game never play any videos, it can still be played.

A modern remake, with better AI, and a better tutorial would be amazing to play.

By the way, note the atmospheric soundtrack.

That is a great soundtrack!

On topic, none really, at least not from the so called mainstream, double or triple A grade developers. I have not seen a single "re-imagining" from such studios that does justice to the originals. The X-Com shooter, Syndicate and even Fallout 3 have little relevance to and respect for the games they claim to be sequels/continuations to. That's not to say they aren't good or interesting games in their own right (well, Syndicate isn't, but anyway), but they might as well have named them "Alien Invasion during the Cold War" and "Post-Apocalyptic Washington".

Smaller studios and indies seem to be doing better. Arx Fatalis and Legends of Grimrock were great spiritual successors to Ultima Underworld and Dungeon Master respectively.

All in all, I would much rather for classic games to get updated/patched just enough so that they can run on modern systems, with nothing more changed, the way GoG does, rather than have "HD remakes" with questionable design changes (upcoming in this category: Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition , Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee New an' Tasty).

I'd love to see a new Road Rash. This game was awesome back in the 90's, and with all the advances in technology a new one would be amazing. EA has toyed with it a bit, even having a concept video:

Sadly nothing ever came of it.

There's not really any game like Road Rash and I can't fathom why EA hasn't brought it back, especially in this day and age where multiplayer is so popular you would think a game like RR could be a huge hit.

I wold also love a new Myth game. That's Myth, not Myst

, the once popular RTS from Bungie, before they went all console and halo on us. They made two games in that series, Myth I: The Fallen Lords and Myth II: Soulblighter. to this day Myth II is the favorite RTS game. Mainly because unlike most RTS games it focused purely on the combat an dstoryline. There's no base building, no resource management, it was all about the combat, and the combat was amazing for it. Terrain, environment, units all mattered. It wasn't a strict "rock/paper/scissors" like most rts games, a very wise tactican could dominate a much larger force knowing how to fight, when, and making use of what units he had.

The MP of myth was truly something, it was the "half life" of RTS games back int he day, a TON of user made mods/conversions for it. The multiplayer was just as big as the single player and you could even co-op through the single player if you wanted. Not to mention mp had a ton of modes most rts games ignore or never even thought of, from your king of the hill style to more quirky "steal the bacon" and others.

I'd love to see myth brought back to a new game, so people that missed it could experience it with ai thriving active mp community. The IP is owned by Take 2 now IIRC and bungie seems to not even have a tought about it or any of their older games, all they care about now is console shooters.

There was a third Myth game, Myth III: The Wolf Age, released in 2001. It was not developed by Bungie, but reviews were favorable.

I would love to see a complete remake of Planescape: Torment by the original development team, using something like Bethesda's latest 3D engine from Skyrim.

Assuming it sold well, then we might also see some long overdue DLCs and possibly, an actual sequel.

A faithful remake of Omikron: The Nomad Soul would also be amazing with that kind of 3D technology.

Cheers, Terry

Dragon Spirit: The New Legend. Old NES top down shoot 'em up.  You were a blue or gold dragon (depending on difficulty which also affected ending) and mowed down every enemy in your path whilst dodging meteors, spiked walls, and anything else that flew your way. Had some decent power-ups involving gaining multiple heads, up to 3, increased fireballs, changing dragon color which changed firing pattern, and temporary invincibility.

May make a decent RPG considering the hero was technically human and used a magic sword to transform. Could be like the Digital Devil Saga where he only transformed during fights.

Might even make a decent flight simulator like Ace Combat or HAWX

EA seem to enjoy teasing us with those things

http://www.unseen64.net/2010/05/04/crusader-no-pity-psp-tech-demo/

Crusader: No Pity, another game that never got released (same with Crusader: No Mercy, which you even got advertisement for in the Crusader: No Regret box)

Come to think of it, the Crusader series would probably work pretty well if released today. It would probably be a first of third person shooter, but that would still suit the game, and it would feel "true" to its source material.

And are any of the people who worked at Bungie back when Myth was made even in the company anymore, or have they all moved on?

A dragon flight sim would be great! The parts in Divinity 2 where you could turn into a dragon were quite fun, and a game based around the concept, that had a bit more variety to the missions would be a dream come true.

Drakan: Order of the Flame & DragonStrike are the two only other dragon flight sims that I know of that are at least passable (and Drakan does not really count, as it was more of a 3rd person action game with dragon flight sequences, and DragonStrike  is a really old game, that has not aged incredibly well, like so many other early 3d games.

There was by the way also a DragonStrike released for the NES, though it was a top down shooter, not entirely unlike Dragon Spirit.

Road Rash 64 was one of the best. How many weeks did i spend in front of that television ramming tire irons into opponents motorcycle spokes at 105 Mph, or ramping off of cattle and spraying police officers with pepper spray? *Sigh*

OH!!! WAIT!!! Ha Ha!!! I have my old N64 in a box at home with that game! Must go dig it out after work!

I have three in mind

Darklands was a brilliantly done free-roaming RPG from Microprose and I would love to see it with updated interface and graphics

Neuromancer, a cyberpunk adventure/RPG from 1989 which had some frustrating elements and would benefit from an update.

Another one is Koshan Conspiracy. The combat was too annoying and could be done way better in a remake. I wouldn't want the visual charm to disappear though, which often happens in remakes.

Lemmings 3D

The lemmings franchise needs a new installment, preferably a 3D.

The puzzle game was even more fun in 3 dimensions.

With modern day graphics this could be an amazing game once again

Anachronox 2 would be nice, the story is already written....

We already have a DOOM 3, so i guess it will be DOOM 4?

would be nice to see some nice adventure games in modern format with the fun of some of the early WESTWOOD titles, like the Kyrandia series, lovely visuals, and fun good humoured story and fun puzzles.

Jade Empire 2 would be nice, with more modern mechanics and fluid game play.

Fun topic will have to think it over more.

Oh, Darklands. That is a game that I need to try at some point. And something along the line of that game, with some updates to get rid of the flaws that were typical for games from that era (like lack of proper tooltips) would be really interesting.

There was an early RPG made of the Krondor stories by a great sci fi authour, i think a member here has played it, i would love to see those stories portrayed in a good RPG with modern graphics for it is a great long series of wonderful books.

I would love to see Parasite Eve and Silent Hill 1 remade. But only in the visual department, no changes in gameplay whatsoever. If they change SH1 to play like Downpour, then I'd rather they left it alone... (example of a perfect remake and how those should be treated is the Gamecube remake of Resident Evil 1)

You seem to be a fan of the Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Dino Crisis, etc. horror genre as well Aya!

I'd really like to see the first Nightmare Creatures remade... Had amazing sound, music by Rob Zombie, and some fun boss fights and fighting styles (especially the ability to dismember foes) but for me the graphics certainly needed a touch-up and the controls were a hassle in the heat of combat. One can dream I guess

That brings back some memories, nightmare creatures was a fun game and it would indeed be nice to see a new one, or at least a new HD re-release.

Indeed, survival horror is my favorite genre, hand in hand with adventures. I've played a lot of s.horror games and for a long time I used to be the sole reviewer of the genre on JA (unfortunately, all those reviews are down now

). Along with the more common franchises, I love and strongly recommend the Parasite Eve series (naturally!), the Fatal Frame series (the scariest of all), Kuon and the absolutely amazing lovecraftian Eternal Darkness.

Somehow though, I missed NC. I remember wanting to play it back in the PS1 days, but never quite got around to doing it. I wouldn't mind doing it some time in the future though, remake or not.

NC was different i noticed. It wasn't your typical hack n slash in that most enemies, if you DID just try to maul them, were intelligent enough to actually combat you and not just swing wildly. They blocked, flew away, ran, used abilities etc so you had to consider just how you wanted to combat them in later levels or if you wanted to use one of your precious few items to fight for you

I'd like to see a full-on remake of Betrayal at Krondor.  People love this game so much, and I've tried to play it several times, but it's just too ugly and clunky.

Ditto the original Eye of the Beholder.

I'd play a remade version of the original System Shock in a second.

For me it would be enough if they overhauled the combat system in Betrayal at Krondor. That is really what is keeping me back from getting into the game.

I'd certainly third (fourth?) remaking Betrayal at Krondor.  Artistically fantastic, great story (which is greatly enhanced by the solid foudation), and a soundtrack to die for.

But then it also has a generous sprinkling of bugs, weird design choices (four seashells taking up as much room as a suit of armour?  Nothing weird there!), dead ends and lackluster animation (to say the least).  I'd kill for a remake of that one.

You can't kill someone in a studio.

Figured this was a good place to post this news with the recent comments about Betrayal at Krondor.

Over the past year, I've received several e-mails about whether I might Kickstart a sequel or a remake to the award-winning hit role-playing game, "Betrayal at Krondor." Over the years, it's still the game I am the most contacted about, and the title which seems to have been the most beloved by fans.

Following the release of Betrayal at Krondor, John and I had designed an unreleaesd sequel to BAK called "Thief of Dreams". Due to some unfortunate politics between the upper management of Dynamix and our parent company Sierra Online, it never was placed into production, a mistake they later regretted bitterly. "Betrayal at Krondor" became one of the highest grossing games ever produced by Dynamix, and won numerous best RPG of the year awards.

Earlier this year I chatted both with John Cutter, the original producer and my co-designer, and of course Raymond E. Feist who owns the universe in which Krondor was set. Unfortunately Midkemia is tied up for the foreseeable future, but there's really nothing that prevents us from creating another Krondor-like game with the same great gameplay, the same great storytelling, and with the same creative team behind the original. Imagine BAK now with better graphics, a fully orchestrated score, a next-generation puzzle system, and lots of cool enhancements to the original combat system. Would that be a game you'd like to see? Are you willing to go in to help us make it happen?

Today we're asking all of you to throw down and show your love for BAK. Help us gather at least 5,000 signatures of fans who will pledge to either give $200 apiece, or raise $200 from among their friends, to go towards the production costs of a "spiritual" sequel to Krondor. There is no money obligation right now. All we want is proof that there are enough die-hard fans out there who really want this game. If you can meet that goal, we will initiate a Kickstarter drive to make it happen. Right now, it's all up to you.

I placed some more thought into this one and looked through some of my old stuff. I don't really know where they could take this one but I think I'd like to see Battletoads remade. One of the most hilarious, fun, frustrating games I've ever played.

Was pretty much a beat em up game but some parts required quick reflexes, memorization, or both and a bit of strategy on how to proceed or fight.

HA, c'mon now if you ever played this game you know you reached this level and it ticked you off

Oops wrong ones.

The exaggerations on power attacks were great. Not much felt better than literally giving an opponent a massive kick in the back end, or headbutting  them with a pair of rams horns
