I just finished J.U.L.I.A and really liked it. I like adventure games in general but I love Sci Fi adventure games. These are a few of the ones I have admired over the years

Mission Critical

Perry Rhodan

Moment of Silence

Labyrinth of Time

Drowned God ***

Beneath a Steel Blue Sky ***

I have no Mouth ***

The Dig ***

Culpa Innata ***

*** like these a lot but did not love them.

I went through Moby and Underdog and they tend to throw in the action/adventure with the adventure games. I did find a few that I missed like The Arrival, NightLong, Robot City and Zero Critical. Anybody have any other recommendations? And BTW, OUTDATED graphics do not bother me in the least. Just as long as I can run the game on my Win 7 rig.

Can you all help an adventure gamer out??????

Nikopol: Secrets of the Immortals

I know it takes place in futuristic Paris but I only got around to playing the demo version.

Dark Side of the Moon - OMG it's so Star treky looking, and with it win 95 interface and FMV (LOL)  but it went on my Amazon.com wish list. (19 bucks is a bit much for the oldy moldy - but you do get the box)

Nikopol looks like a serious Zork Grand Inquisitor. Found it for 5 bucks on Steam, playing it tonight.

Thanks all

You are going to want to find Dark Side of the Moon on DVD as the CD version will drive you crazy swapping 6 disks during your play. And you will need the fan made Patch so you can see the dialog text in the game.

You may also want to look into...Some are pretty old and I have no idea about playing any game on Win 7 so if you get in a fix there is plaenty of help here.

Schizm: Mysterious Journey. It is a really challenging Myst-clone set in a sci-fi environment.

I did not find part 2 in the series to be nearly as interesting

Gemini Rue: A more recent game, set in a cyberpunk environment.

The Longest Journey might technically speaking count as sci-fi. The game series takes place in both a fantasy and a sci-fi world.

Schizm - Not a fan of those types of adventure games - they are usually more puzzle than story.

Gemini Rue - I have along with Resonance

Longest Journey - yeah, sorta sci fi-ey - spectacular game

Lets see if I can add a few to the list:

Crystal Key 1

Lighthouse [not exactly sci-fi but sorta]

Omikron

The Experiment [sorta sci-fi, interface detracts from enjoyment]

Mystery of the Nautilus

Chronomaster

Starship Warlock

some old graphic AGs that run nice in DosBox/ScummVM like:

Dune 1-2

Fahrenheit 451

The Dig

Neuromancer

Murder in Space

Starship Titanic, Gateway, Hitchiker, Infocom etc.  Never liked interactive fiction games. I was so glad when the adventure game genre moved beyond word parcers. The parcers got better and better over time but for me it felt more like work than play when I played those types of games.

BTW, I read Pohl's Gateway about 3 months ago. Great book.

Actually I dislike the word parsers too but for me there really didn't seem like very many in Starship Titanic and the exploration, story and puzzles far outweighed any instances of the word parser. I didn't enjoy the game the first time I played it (didn't finish) and didn't quite understand what was going on. It wasn't until I read the novel and replayed the game that I understood everything.

I had added earlier a few more games above that you might not have seen & may want to look into...

Oh, hi, are you the Dajjer from RPG-Watch?   (I haven't been there for ages!)

Portal 1 & 2 aren't exactly  adventure, but you might enjoy them.  Although you probably already have them.

I assume you played those old Space Quest games.  The re-released collection did still play in XP, though i haven't checked if they still work in 7.

Hey Trav, that would be me. I still post over there. Good to hear from ya.

As far as here, I have basically just been scanning this web site since they changed it. I like the old format way better and it had  better search capabilities.

I have the Portal games but you're right they are not adventure games. The Space quest games are on my to do list. But I just keep putting it off. Don't know why.

I played Nickopol last night. Sorta reminds me of Moment of Silence but doesn't come close in atmosphere. Additionally it has some timed puzzles in the early game that were totally frustrating. I think after I post this, I'm gonna watch the movie The Immortals, upon which the game was based.

I don't think the game you have seen at Target is the same. Target's Luxor game is more than likely a recently released Casual Game.

The game I was refering to was released in 1996 http://www.mobygames.com/game/secrets-of-the-luxor

They have, to be frank, not aged very well. At least not the first two. While not as bad as King's Quest, there are still plenty of unfair deaths and trial & error to deal with.

Dark Side Of The Moon, as Greyfuss already mention, is one of the Best Adventure Games ever. I'm a big fan of FMV and DSOM is just fantastic. I recently found out that a patch was made to let the game to be able to play again in XP or Win7. And, after more than 10 years, I finally could play it again! What a joy! It definitly must be played by anyone who enjoy a well done game.

But going back to the subject... Sci-Fi Games. Last year, 2 games were released using Full HD motion video. DarkStar and Conspiracies 2 - Lethal Networks. The first one is a 15 Gigs of digital download and the other is only delivered in a box, I guess. But Conspiracies is a very well done game, made by a Greek company (Anima PPD Interactive) and I recommend it very much. As the name sugests, there is a Conspiracies 1, released in 2003 and I also recommend. It is not in Full HD but it is well done also. Boths have the option of Greek or English speeching. One last thing... DarkStar is also a great game but the speech is too low and you don't have the option of subtitles, what makes it very difficult to play sometimes.

BTW: if you don't have the DVD version Dark Side of the Moon can be played without swapping CDs by doing a "home brewed" full install:

First make 6 folders in your main game folder, and lable them Disk1, Disk2, Disk3 etc.

Copy the contents of each CD into the appropriate folder

Open Launch32.ini [it's in the main game folder] and edit the path of each "disk" entry so it points to the new folders you made.

As an example here's mine:

[Discs]
DiscPath=d:\adv\Darkside\
CurDisc=Disc1
Disc1=d:\adv\Darkside\Disc1
Disc2=d:\adv\Darkside\Disc2
Disc3=d:\adv\Darkside\Disc3
Disc4=d:\adv\Darkside\Disc4
Disc5=d:\adv\Darkside\Disc5
Disc6=d:\adv\Darkside\Disc6

Apply the patch [I got mine at the Vogon's site]. It's really just a modded xvideoio.dll that you drop into the \bin subfolder.

I posted this last some time last year but can't seem to find it now...

I don't know what you mean by "main game folder".  Is this something new in Windows 7?  I'm still on XP.  Is there anyway to adapt this installation to XP? -- Just curious.  I had this game working in a Win 98 Virtual Box, but after a reformat I lost the setup.  Now I have to figure out how to reinstall VPC/Win 98. Maybe.  Of course if I can play DSOM in XP I may not need it.  I still have Amber, Journeys Beyond to get working but perhaps there is an XP installation for that as well.

Either way, it would be nice to be able to play it without switching discs.

Clarification: the instructions I gave are based on XP, and the patch is to get it running on XP. I don't know if Win7 either needs the patch or can run DSOM at all as I don't have W7 to test it.

Main game folder is just the folder where the game installer puts the game into on your hard drive : an example c:\Program Files\DSOM. Once you've found the folder, go inside it and make the 6 new folders, then put the patched dll in the bin subfolder that the game installer alread made. Let the patch over write anything.

And what Greyfuss says...
