I don't know, it just make me see adventure games as being equivalent to lounging on a deck chair in the sun with a martini getting a foot massage

Surely adventure games are more than a simple 'break from life'. If they weren't we wouldn't be obsessed over them, praising titles like Grim Fandango, Longest Journey and King's Quest instead of just playing tetris - well hey, one break's as good as another!

I'm not suggesting games are high art, but just as I don't think James Joyce would have liked the slogan for his books to be 'take a break from life', it's rather demeaning for a hobby of yours to be nothing more than a respite from real life, which is your job, family and your bank account.

Since gaming is a big part of my life, I think I'd prefer "Give yourself a break" or "Take a break."

Indeed, it makes us look like game addicts.

See below how to know you do have an addiction

Marketing supports game addiction. Here's an example.

I'm not sure I've fully understood any of the replies in this thread so far :s

The theme was addressed in another part of the forum somewhere in the not to distant past. I'll look for it.

I think I understand the premise of the tag line but it doesn't portray it's intent, I think.

Adventure games are more than just a break, to me, anyway. They take a lot of brain power and are literally like "living" a movie or book. Not just being a bystander, but actually walking through and affecting the environment and determining the outcome. I think I wrote about this years ago but have no idea where that would be now. I still think adventure games are marketed in the wrong ways to the wrong audiences. They can appeal to the existing gamers as well as people like Mom's at home, etc. They should be marketed in magazines at a hair salon, for instance. Book club peoples could get into adventure games, also. The genre needs to be put out there more widely. Plus, there are studies that show this type of gaming that engages the brain in a variety of problem solving areas keeps our minds sharper than not adventure gaming.

maybe "give life a break' means "cut real life some slack" for not being as vivid and engrossing as adventure games? ...kind of an ironic turnabout?

Hello There

I think that the idea was to give the impression that playing adventure games might be considered being an escape from our everyday lives where things might either be boring at times or too frenetic at other times, and therefore we play adventure games to esconce ourselves in a personna of the avatar we use to have an escapist holiday for sometime by living moments and situations that pleasure our minds, imaginations, and emotions.  I would see it more as giving my life a mental recess by sliding into my imagination of worlds undreamed of.

By the way...Good to see you again Lady Kestrel, and Val....I love your ship

ShadowWalker! Long time! Great to "see" you! Yep, awesome ship from a series that should never have been cut down... and so early. Yet we have so much trash that has taken it's place... like wrestling on the scifi channel.
