Any games you can compare it to?

The gothic series obviously, or the elder scrolls games but with worse gameplay

Risen is from the Gothic developers so it's the best refrence you'll get in regards to how it will play.

Imagine something like Two Worlds or possibly Kingdoms of Amalur, where you are given more control over how you fight (you pick the direction of the swing, and have a more precise parry). Unlike Two Worlds & KoA the game is rather unforgiving.

The reason why I compare it to Two Worlds & KoA is how the game limits you from going anywhere you want at any time. Unlike The Elder Scrolls, the enemies don't scale to your level, and you'll find powerful enemies blocking you from getting to where you want to go until you are powerful enough to deal with them. Risen is quite good at giving you the illusion of the world being very open to you (and well, technically speaking it is, as long as you can find a way around those very powerful enemies).

The reason why I find Risen & Gothic 1-3 to be really good is how they reward skill over grind. These games will actively punish you if you play poorly (in particular gothic 2), but if you are good at the games, you can beat enemies that are considerably more powerful than you.

The Gothic series (not counting Gothic 4, which really is Gothic in name only) is PC-only. Risen was released for multiple consoles, though from what I've heard, the PC version is teh one to get.

Risen is quite a lot easier to get into than Gothic, as it does not ramp up the difficulty quite as fast, but still offers a challenge later on in the game. Gothic 2 would just feel unfiar if you were to start with it.

Haha! You misunderstand me sir! I have some impressive patience and diligence! I once spent 49 minutes combating a single enemy on a particular game who was more than 65 levels my better. I won eventually and proved to myself (but more importantly a friend i'd bet a large sum of money with) that I COULD beat an opponent purely based on skill. I absolutely love the challenge.

Now my task simply falls to finding said games.

GOG are giving away Realms of Arkania 3 if you participate in their speedtest. You have a chance of getting the game, and if you don't get the game on your first try, you can take the test again.

Current bundles:

Indie Gala 11

Contains:
Imperial Glory

XIII Century: Gold Edition

Necrovision: Lost Company

and pay more than $3.96 to get:

Men of War

Cryostasis

Star Wolves 3: Civil War

Men of War: Red Tide

King's Bounty: The Legend

Fantasy Wars

Necrovision

Worth it for Men of War, King's Bounty & Fantasy Wars. I've not played the other games.

Humble THQ bundle

I guess they are trying to save THQ, which is in a poor financial state right now. this bundle contains:
Darksiders

Metro 2033

Red Faction: Armageddon

Company of Heroes

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts

Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor

Saints Row The Third (if you pay more than the average (currently $5.5

)

Absolutely worth it for Company of Heroes+expansions. CoH is one of the best RTSs ever.

Bundle Stars

The newcomer of the lot. This one costs £5 (fixed price) and contains

Men of War: Vietnam

Off-Road drive

Reign: Conflict of nations

Death to Spies: Moment of Truth

Death Track: Resurrection

Star Wolves 2

Real Warfare 1242

Real Warfare 2: Northern Crusade

Of this lot, I've only played Men of War: Vietnam, but it was really good

Groupees Be Mine 6

Contains:

Eschalon Book 1

Ceville

Paranomal

Enclave 2012 Edition (no idea what makes it different from its previous releases)

+ some music

(and soon also Men of War: Condemned Heroes)

Pay more than $5 and get:

Two Worlds (+ Soundtrack)

Dawn of Fantasy (+ soundtrack)

Worms Reloaded

Gorky 17

Earth 2160

I quite enjoyed both Two Worlds & Eschalon Book 1, and think that they make this a worthy bundle

Indie Royale Winter Bundle

Currently costs 4€ and contains:

Greed Corp

Hamlet or the last Game Without MMORPG Features, Shaders and product Placements

BIT. TRIP RUNNER

Conquest of Elysium 3

Leave Home

They Breathe

In typical Indie Royale fashion, this one contains some lesser known games and some high profile ones. I've only played BIT. TRIP  RUNNER & Greed Corp, and found neither one to be all that spectacular, but I've heard good things about Conquest of Elysium 3.

And finally:

Gamer's Gate Space Suit Bundle, which is on its last day. Contains:

Caster

Hegemony Gold: Wars in Ancient Greece

Strategic War in Europe

Zombies.

I've played both Caster & Zombies. and found neither to be spectacular, though Zombies. does have a surprisingly large fan following. Hegemony is the main draw for me when it comes to this bundle.

*edit*

No, that was incorrect, the Gamer's Gate bundle was not the final one, there is one more:
Bundle in a Box: Eclectic Delights and it contains:

Shadows on the Vatican, Act: 1

Delve Deeper +DLC

War of the Human Tanks

Eversion

Fibrillation

And pay more than the average (currently $2.64):
The Adventures of Shuggy
Stay Dead

The 4th Wall

Fibble

I've played Delve Deeper & the free version of Eversion, and I enjoyed both. Delve Deeper is a nice coffee break game, a quick TBS about gathering gold for a greedy dwarf king (can be played with others, and it is probably a great hotseat game), and Eversion is a rather unsettling 2d Platformer (I played the free version, but this new version looks like it is the same game, but with some fancier graphics)
