Because the updated Gemini Rue was recompiled using the latest AGS version, which sadly broke compatibility with saved games from the previous version.

Another possible culprit is changing the game resolution/gfx filter through the winsetup file. Many AGS games refuse to load, or sometimes even show on the restore game menu, saves created under different gfx filter options :\.
If all else fails, you could post on the Wadget Eye Games forums, Dave is usually quick to reply with technical help.
