It's far from the worst game I've played, but the ending was disappointing. We all know that Atlantis blows up in the end according to the legend, but did they really have to include that in the game? The developers went to all the trouble to create this beautiful world for the game and then just destroyed it. That's one of the reasons I'd rather have seen a prequel than a sequel. Atlantis 2, 3, etc. didn't take place in the beautiful Atlantis seen in Lost Tales.

The puzzles were good but the voice acting is real bad and the character designs looked awful.  Now I better get a head start before you all will be after me as a mob with pitchforks and torches.
Nah. I can agree with you about the strange voice acting and the doll-like characters that vibrate and twitch strangely even on 5 year old computers. But IMO the game had qualities that made up for it.

By the way, wasn't the topic of this thread is Oldies but Goodies not Atlantis the Lost Tales?
Haha! Well it's no secret that there does not exist a game where there isn't someone who hates it. Atlantis: The Lost Tales is kind of unique in my experience in that it's full of the kind of gameplay I hate (timed sequences and sudden death) and yet I've gone back and replayed it 3 or 4 times now because I enjoyed the graphics design and the music. One of my favorite scenes was the Rat Catcher's Lair.

I recommend Sanitarium.
I'd recommend it too. Very creative game. If you can find some favorite screenshots, post them the way Crisger did for Atlantis: Lost Tales.

Ooh, Kyrandia series, I haven't played that or Loom yet, but they've always seemed visually attractive and interesting games to me that I'd like to still play sometime.

The voice acting scared me off, but this discussion has made me curious enough to give the Atlantis series another try.

An oldie that I want to get to is SPQR..

I have SPQR and it is a lovely game, very intesesting and innovative...and historically accurate. Not sure if i can get it running on XP SP3, i had it runing on Windows 98.

OK Kyrandia it will be, they are LOVELY games and such fun to play, lots of classic puzzles and even some tough ones including labyriths..no timed puzzles tho or pixel hunts. and the fully voiced versions are a lot of fun.. ...  I or II, have to decide...

I love SPQR, one of my earliest games.  My version had a bug in it that kept me locked inside the temple of Augustus I think, but apart from that otherwise a great game.  I never could save Rome from burning though.

I have not been able to get iSPQR to run or even install on my XP SP 3 system yet but i may try DOS and see if that helps. i fear it is between DOS and Windows and may be beyond our reach...i did love finding new areas to see and explore...it was so much fun and reminded me often of one of my other epic adventure games.....

the wonderful URU and Aegura

SPQR was online for some years... and there remains a website or two:

Here is a partial version of the game, not sure if it still works:

Good News Fellow Citizens! Rome Lives Again!  SPQR runs just fine on XP SP3, just have to set compatability mode for 1995 and it runs like a charm! What fun. I will do a play thru of this fine classic for the next Oldie but Goodie from me and always this topic welcomes any of us to post similar games from the old days, hopefully ones that will still run.

This is great news. Just do a full install, be sure to install the required old version of Quick Time, 2.5 I think it is and it will be good to go.

Another Chance to Save ROME!

Since GOG is having a major 50% off sale, I loaded up on several games I already have, but wanted to take advantage of the all-disks-in-one GOG install format (plus any updating GOG has done for winXP and above). One game I purchased was Atlantis Lost Tales.

Also, in keeping with my interest in the use of older laptops for AGs, I just purchased on eBay

another-this is my third) Fujitsu p1610 mini-laptop/tablet with 9 inch screen & WinTablet-XP, including 2 extended batteries for only $117 (in its day, sold for circa $1500-2000 with each extended battery circa $50). It converts very quickly from a regular laptop to a tablet with touchscreen & stylus which works great with the most basic P&C games such as Alida.

Anyway, I loaded Atlantis TLT on it and it immediately hung up at the opening screen. However, I set it (via the icon) to Win95 Compatibility and 'open with 640x480' and that got it running reasonably fine, but still in a small window. However, Fujitsu/Intel provide a Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Mobile app that allows you to make more direct customized settings for each game, including full-screen, and that allowed Atlantis TLT to open in a beautiful full-screen mode and so far the game runs very well.

With this size screen, the 640x480 graphics look great! The initial play of the game also reminds me why in The Myst-Like Game list, Atlantis TLT & Beyond Atlantis were added as Borderline Myst-like/Cross-Over games. There is a bit of that Myst feel partly due to the graphics which remind me somewhat of those in Riven.

The future ain't what it used to be!

I'm late to the party, but I just wanted to mention that in this household, the White Horse cutscene in Beyond Atlantis is considered one of the greatest cutscenes ever.

Atlantis Evolution is the game that led to me being banned from this site.

SPQR is one of those games I *really like* though have not played to conclusion.. yet. I look forward to doing so since it is so atmospheric as well as ineresting from an architectural standpoint since it was conceived [I believe] from a serious Ancient Rome digial modeling project. Audio and music is very good too. A myst like game in the highest sense of the term.

I suspect the reason I didn't plow through it the first time was due to the calendar coordination aspects of the game. My grasp of dates and times was not terribly good [or so I felt at the time, I was probably overly critical] and I became too cautious to proceed for fear of messing something up. Loved what I played tho.

Yes Tincup the game is based on a complete model of Anicent Rome that exists in a museum I believe, so the layout of the game is 100 percent accurate and is actualy used as a teaching aide for students of Ancient history. All of the details of the game, the dates, the calendar and the social themes are all accurate and even the overall story is based on actual events, tho the main protagonist and his master are of course fiction, tho who knows, there could have been such accomplished "scientists" of that era judiing from relics we have been finding. I am glad you enjoy it, i do to and am so glad it works fine on XP and we can still play it.
