I have to ask: is this a direct translation? It's very charming and just as baffling as our habit of crossing our fingers.

I've spent my entire day showing two person from Slovenia Stockholm, and explaining Swedish terms & expressions, so I'm in the mindset of using Swedish expressions in English. Yes, it is a direct translation, and it means the same thing as crossing your fingers. You also put your thumb into the palm of your hand, and then fold the other 4 fingers over it (but you don't clenche your fist).

So, I thumb for you all!

Crossing one's fingers when hoping for a beneficial outcome is done with the fingers in front, on display. It is like a sort of prayer to the gods of fortune.
Crossing one's fingers behind one's back (very old fashioned and not done now) was used to negate whatever one was swearing to or avowing. Like a get out of jail free card - 'oh I can't be held to that as I had my fingers crossed when I said it'. I think we just use sarcasm or facial expressions nowadays.
I have read that the whole 'crossing' bit was meant to invoke the cross of Jesus. [smiley=shrug.gif]

I thought the statement "I had my fingers crossed, so therefore whatever I promised was a little fib." is still quite common amongst kids. Like Caroline says:

Uh-oh.... it looks like we've sprung upon one of those cross-atlantic differences again...
Defense seems to be the American spelling whilst defence is the British spelling. Canada is sitting on de fence with this one...

| Deleted User | Hi Everyone
We're all doing fine here, although there is no power in my area and not really expecting it in the near future. Thank goodness I managed to find wifi in a library two towns up so I could check in.
Yes Irene was a tropical storm when it passed through but we were on the east side (windy side) of the storm track and the 90MPH gusts wreaked havoc on trees and power lines. Even now numerous roads are still closed. School opening for the kids has now been pushed back a week and many of them can be seen outside walking around like zombies suffering withdrawal symptoms from their on-line video games.
Freezers and fridges have pretty much given up the fight so it looks like hot dogs and storebought potato salad tonight.

There were calm bays:

Cest la vie.
How's life in Adelaide these days?  o you miss school?

Would you consider eight days without electricity (nine days without cable) a considerable length of time?
Sadly I had to toss most of my veggies from the garden that I had frozen. All that hard work. Hopefully (I keep my fingers crossed LOL) that this was a one time event for us, not so much the storm, but the Spoiler Alertclusterf#ck with CL&P in organizing crews from TN, OH, and Canada with the cleanup and restoration efforts. :

Not a problem. I can still go right at the end of the drive and go a few miles out of the way to get to town.....
one hour later...

Uhm, maybe not. > Luckily the second tree wasn't hung up in the lines so I was able to cut it up the next day.

Well, are you back online now? (Permanently, from home, I mean). I hope you at least have power restored again everywhere up your way.
Nice to see you, anyway . [smiley=wave.gif]
