It is interesting that in terms of art style it is almost photo realistic, yet the moods it evokes are much more than just realistic...the ethos of the story and the feelings of it all seem quite powerful even tho we rarely see another person and we never see ourselves at all in that game.
Tho i indicated my choices i am still really undecided... i suppose i will have to pick again soon.

Both games have a lasting impression etched deep in my mind I'll never forget.

For one, it captures an angst and sadness that lingers in Europe from the Fin de Sicle era, from before the Great War that put out the lights of the Golden Age, truly that international (at least among European nations) era of art, and culture and science and hope that lingered in some ways into the last days of the Russian "Empire" of Soviet days and still haunts France and some other places...it truly is a marvel that a game could convey that..plus she is such a wonderful main character...so many things.....and the beauty of the subtle yet rich art style. I agree. Very special.... quite similar to Dreamfall in many ways.

While I don't think that it's intended to be multiplayer, and it looks as though it's likely to take some time to reach a significant degree of completion, there is this fan project.
As to favorites of my own, let me see... (Alas, I fear that I'm likely to forget some. :/)
(And no, I have no intention of limiting myself to just one. or one thing, I may like one game very much for different reasons than I do another, placing comparison on perhaps uncertain footing.)
The Museum of Broken Memories
The Longest Journey
The Quest for Glory series, and in particular the third game (if I may stretch the definition to include such hybrids)
Darkness Within: In Pursuit of Loath Nolder
The Myst series, perhaps Revelations especially
The Gabriel Knight series, perhaps the second a little more than the other two (but yes, including the third )
Digital: A Love Story, which, while I think somewhat easy and short, I seem to recall finding both interesting and more than a little moving. I do think that it's well worth downloading.
(I may return to this later if more come to mind.)

I'm sorry to read that it doesn't work in Windows 7, however, especially as I'll likely not be going back to older OSes on my own future comupters; I might end up either trying to emulate or looking for a secondary OS of my own should I come to replay it again... :/ Compatibility mode doesn't help?
(And hey too! It's nice to be back, and to see you here again (you may not have left, but the effect is similar ) - here's hoping that I manage to hang around a little longer this time! ^^; )

Sorry I don't have a handle yet on inserting quotations:.
Yes. And of recent games it't the one I would *most* love to see a sequel to. Sadly there seems to be no interest in that.
The creators manage to create a fantastic and quite unique atmosphere of forlorn other-worldliness, at times with an overpowering sense of being *lost* in the universe, qualities many other games strive for but don't wholly realize. One of the under-the-radar greats.

Maybe I’m missing out by not playing the latest non full 3D adventures. But at least I have the memories of them going back to ones mentioned earlier like Atlantis series and Riven.

They're not necissarily the 'best' adventure games out there, but my favourites are:
Secret of Monkey Island - The original game got me into playing adventure games. I remember being amazed at the potential of computesr for storytelling games after playing this.
Under a Killing Moon - Bought it when it came out for a ridiculously high amount of money £60.00 I think it was in the shops. Bought a CD Rom because of this. It was an Interactive Movie which were going to be the future of entertainment. They weren't, but I still was amazed by this game.
Moment of Silence - Just enjoyed the atmosphere and concept. I like futuristic conspiricy stories and this one pulled it off.
Shady Brook - An independent game which I got immersed in. I loved the environment and characters, being a big fan of creepy, small town horror stories.
Farenheit - Took adventure games in a slightly different direction, and was very well executed.
Gemini Rue - Not difficult, but a great game, with a story and atmosphere I really enjoyed.
Anyway, that's my list of favourites.

Status : Offline | So I was Googling "Game like Myst" and it took me to this site, where I read for awhile and discover that you experienced gamers, like me, have never seen anything to equal Myst and Riven. I am SO crushed! I honestly have been thinking I would buy an anniversary edition of the Myst games, but I just discovered that even these new packages still won't work on anything newer than XP. What a huge disappointment to think that I may never be able to play them again! And even sadder to think that there's nothing else like them out there! I spent many happy hours with Myst and Riven, and would like to again. sigh.
So what do you recommend for a die-hard Myst fan? I really loved the no pressure/ no time constraint/mysterious games, and since I'm finally finding myself with more time, I'd love something like that to play again. I just found Machinarium and played the demo, and while it is cute and similar in nature to the Myst games, I really miss all that beauty and great sound effects. Amazing how well I still remember them! And I would love to ride the coaster on Riven again!

Otherwise, if you don't mind grimmer, more philosophical fare, you might perhaps look at some of this fellow's works, such as Last Rose in a Desert Garden, The Infinite Ocean or The Museum of Broken Memories (which should be found via his "games" section).
MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
