I read a post [by Ancalimon] from last March that it was possible to copy all CD data to HD, then edit the CD.BYZ file so as run w/o CD. I'm not sure if the poster is still active so I was curious if anyone else has been sucessfull with this operation - my attempts still asks for CD's.

EDIT: Once again answered my own question - make a big iso of all 6-cds data and edit the cd.byz file in it so 1,2,3,4,5,6 appear verically. Might need Turbo to slow things down.

EDIT: a poster noted that while the game starts and plays fine the save/load functions improperly - it requests Disc 2.
However, by editing the cd.byz so it reads:
2
1
3
4
5
6
solves the problem for now - I'm just not sure if there will be problems later in game. I need a save game from further in...

yep it usually works to add all the files with those, another notorious disk swapping game is RIVEN the second great title in the Myst series that had five disks in the CD version and you had to swap all the time ..you can add all of those files too to get a non swap version. Glad Byzantium worked for you, i have wanted to try that game fora  while as i love Byzantine history. Great topic for a game.  Post some pics if you have time. Would love to see it.

CG - Riven was one of my first 'custom full install projects' when I started to digitize my game collection. I originally played it swapping disks like a mad man though - tribute to how good the game was that don't remember it being too much of a drag.

At this point I have about 60 or in the permanent collection, all on disc and running in XP. A melange of original full installs, custom installs, no cd fixes, and when all else fails, iso. A few more run in DosBox/VDMsound, though my taste in AG's doesn't really predate the CD/W95 era so emulators are mostly old air combat sims and strategy games. The tech side of this is a job in itself for sure, but it's rewarding to be able to click on an old fav whenever you want..

I'll try to post some pix of Byzantine too.

Great to hear you have been able to get the oldies working. ScummVM is a great resource for some of the classic games and another place to get help i s a forum called Vogons..it has some great advice on oldies.

thanks for any pics you have time to get.

Yes, Vogons is a great resource - some real die-hards over there. I also check Inferno's XP Game List - he's done a lot of work getting reluctant titles to work in XP as well.

What's the game about? Good story?
Nature's first green is gold,&&Her hardest hue to hold.&&Her early leaf's a flower;&&But only so an hour.&&Then leaf subsides to leaf.&&So Eden sank to grief,&&So dawn goes down to day.&&Nothing gold can stay.

Could you please post the content of your cd.byz file, as well as volume label for your ISO? I'm having no luck getting this to work.

I would be perfectly happy with keeping the combined ISO mounted in a virtual drive. I just don't want to keep switching ISOs (doesn't help that the game quits when you alt+tab).

Getting the game working without any CD mounted would be even better
.

- Thanks.

Ok, May was a long time ago, let's see...

Open cd.byz and it looks like:

1
2
3
4
5
6

[note: "1" occupies the upper left corner]

Volume Label is "NEW" per Windows Explorer though I don't remember that being an issue. The time consuming part was trial/error on the .byz file and making the big iso of all the CDs. Hope this helps and good luck...

Hmm, that's exactly what I did. The game installs and runs fine - I get the intro, and I'm able to explore Emre's apartments and go to any location.

The problem occurs when I try to load a saved game. The game then asks to "Insert Byzantine CD 2".

Not sure what else there is to do

Here's what I'm going to do. Create 5 virtual drives in Virtual CloneDrive (you can use Daemon Tools as well) and mount all 5 CDs in there
(you don't need #1 to play). That way there is (hopefully) no swapping involved, as long as the game can detect subsequent CDs in other drives.

Edit: I've sent an e-mail to Ancalimon as well, maybe he can help us out
.

let us know how that goes. I will mount both the big iso and CD2 in the ral drive and see what happens.
No dice. I have a feeling the real CDR needs to be unplugged so that it only sees the VD.. getting late and that test will have to wait for tomorrow... foiled again...

Update on Byzantine save/load issue running off a single big 5-disc iso:

Made an iso of disc 2
Created 2 virtual dives with MagicDisc
Mounted the big 5-disc iso in first VD and disk2 iso second
Game save/load functioned properly

I'm not sure if mounting disc2 iso alongside the big iso will solve the save/load issue after the game progress to the other discs, but it's possible. If not, creating 5 virtual drives and mounting 5 single disc iso's at same time would solve it. A slight hassle setting up but no disk swapping once done. If you are a one game at a time player and don't need to use the VD's until finished this would work fine.

I'd still like to find a clean solution for running off the one big iso. If it's code embedded in the exe that's out of my depth for now.

EDIT:  opened CD.byz in the big ISO and switched the "1" and 2" positions - so onow "2" is in the upper left. Game starts and save/loads fine. Don't know if this solves everything per above remarks, but at least the big iso works for now. If anyone has a save from later in the game I could check.
