It's more about the element's you expect and enjoy.

In a(nother) nutshell:

Gabriel Knight 3

Why?

-An absolutely mind blowing story with a satisfying ending (and one that is just begging for a GK 4)

-a great script, fantastic dialogs, ...

-Great characters that you really care about

-bucket-loads of atmosphere

-puzzles that are well integrated into the storyline

-an interface that lets you completely explore the gaming world like no other adventure game has ever done before

-an immersive story

-top-notch voice acting

-an incredible soundtrack

-an intriguing story

-a suitable visual style, great graphics (well, they were in my opinion, I know some of you didn't like GK 3's graphics)

Oh, and did I mention the importance of a great story?


But most importantly: a game that stops feeling like a game, a game that mingles all the elements I named here above so good that it just sucks you into its world and makes you forget that you're actually playing a game!


Phew, so far for my two cents!

Important features (IMO)
-Story
-Atmosphere
-Interesting characters (character's personality: funny, mysterious, intelligent...so on)

You're right. Maybe I'm a bit demanding  
. But on the other hand, the GK-series games are luckily not the only ones who live up to my high expectations of a good adventure. Broken Sword and TLJ are two games that immediately spring to mind.

I've heard that that GK3 did not satisfy those requirements, especially in the realms of good voice acting/dialogue, and logical puzzles (something about a fake moustache made of syrup and cat hair).  This is why I never bought it although I loved GK1 and 2.  I'll have to play it one of these days and render my own verdict.

Most of the argument around GK3's voice casting dealt with the recasting of Tim Curry as Gabriel Knight. If you liked him in GK1, you'll probably like him too in GK3. I didn't have a problem with the puzzle you mention. I figured it out in about 15 minutes. And you were given enough tips in the game to give you an idea what you had to do. But looking back on it, I understand why so many found that puzzle illogical and downright unrealistic.

   - useless wandering to increase game length
   - no freaking mazes
   - endless dialogue
2. Themes
   - SciFi
   - Horror
   - Fantasy
3. Story
4. Atmosphere
   - good use of sound f/x
   - realistic in game animation
   - vibrant/contrasting colors
5. Characters
   - good personality
   - immersive dialogue
   - emotions
6. Puzzles
   - interesting
   - logical
   - well integrated
7. Graphics
   - would prefer 3D with todays technology

 Fortunately, there's a lot of great games, and not only the ones you've mentioned.  I guess there's no need to name any - the list would be too long-, but you could check, for instance, "Your top 20 list of games" topic

The only thing I would add to Death Ray's list is detective/mystery stories.  I totally agree with the "do not" list which can make an otherwise good game a totally exasperating experience.  

Since personal tastes vary so much, maybe developers should pay more attention to what gamers don't want than what we do want.

One more thing- Background Music. I like having something good to listen while I'm racking my head over the puzzles. It helps sets the mood of the story. IMO music is more important than voices.

Yes Monsey- A LONG loop of good background music can be very helpful when solving a difficult puzzle or perhaps no music at all at that point.  Short loops are a pain and most annoying!  >
 The result is shutting off the sound until the puzzle is finished.

As Sennebec stated at the beginning of the thread:

The only thing I can add to this is:  character(s) that I can care about whether it is a first person or third person experience.

I loved Riven too Sir Dave.

 YES!  .............except perhaps the graphics in GK3 as an example - I am one of the folks who found the navigation and zooming in on fuzzy textures hard on the eyes and detracting from the wonderful atmosphere.......sorry  :-[

Oops, I seem to keep finding stuff to add.  Monkeybone is asking about the elements we expect and enjoy.  One of the elements that I really enjoy is exploring well rendered and interesting scenes with LOTS of things to interact with.  I would probably prefer fewer locations with more stuff to do in each place.  I also really like well rendered cut-scenes and having the game save these for future replay. Grim Fandango, Syberia and some others did this.

Haunting theme music as in Syberia, GK2

Still adventuring after all these years!

Patiently awaiting The Last Crown: Haunting of Hallowed Isle, and Bracken Tor... 

... and Asylum if it's not tooooo scary...

A good adventuregame?

-Characters/story etc should be as detailed and alive as in world's best literature.

-Cutscenes should be like Oscar-winning-movies

-Soundtrack should be able to beat Michael Nyman's best compositions

-Puzzles... uhm.. well, you can always use Riven for inspiration.


Too bad that this kind of 'ideal' adventure doesn't exist. No game ever made as much impression to me as most of the mediocre books / movies I've read or seen... strange...
