(For those that do not understand the purpose of this thread: Randy has sold the JA site while he focuses on his health. This thread is intended for him. The site will continue on under new ownership. Any flame posts or arguments will be promptly deleted. Thank you Caroline for kicking off a proper tribute thread for the man who has done so much.  JA-Staff2)

Dear Randy

I just want to say thankyou to you for creating such a great place that JA+ has been.  I've been hanging out here since 2003 learning about all the latest adventure games and getting advice on which gems I missed so I could hunt them down on ebay.

I've travelled to UK and USA and met up with people from this forum.

I count some of the regulars on this place among my friends and keep in touch via email and facebook.

I've written tens of thousands of words of silly stories on this place as well as getting involved in discussions about deep and meaningful ideas (and some not worth getting involved in).   Sometimes I've spent hours reading the threads and laughing at the witty exchanges of humour.

Quite a few of us post our holiday snaps here to share which surely shows how welcoming a group of people hang out here.

This forum has allowed me to meet people that wouldn't normally cross my path and for that I can only say thank you for making this place so attractive to so many different folks.  I haven't seen all the behind-the-scenes hard work you've put in because for me, the place just runs smoothly - a testament to you, I think.

This place is a second home to me and I expect it will continue to be so.

I wish you and your family all the best Randy.  <<hugs>>  :-*  :-*

I too would like to give Randy my most warm heartfelt thanks for this site and all that hard work he has put into making this place what it is.

Of all the sites I use daily this is the one that always feels like "home" to me. A nice comfy place with people you know to talk about anything. I have met some great people from here that has carried over to other things besides the forums.

Anytime I need news or I'm looking for good reviews on adventure games JA is the site I trust the most above any other. Randy has been one of the reviewers I have almost always agreed with when it comes to adventure games.

I wish Randy all the best for him and his family and friends, Thanks for such a wonderful place.

I can only agree with almost everything the previous posters have said.

I suppose to thank Randy for what he has done for Adventure gaming, is a no-brainer.

However, we could thank Randy for a lot of things, besides.
Most of all, I love the honest, candid style of this place, and that is Randy's style, isn't it?  Randy has always been honest and direct, and it shows in his management policies.

But besides that, Randy has always been very fair as well.  Fair towards indies, devs, the industry, gamers, forum members, reviewers, staff.  The loyalty of Randy's staff speaks for itself.

Thank you for this website, Randy, and for all the info and camaraderie and good plain fun we all have shared here over the years.

Over the years, Randy has built this site up to a force to be reckoned with, and has worked hard to keep adventure gaming on the map.

He has delivered many interesting and insightful editorials, reviews and articles, both personally and via staff and contacts.

He has espoused free speech as far as is practicable on these forums, which has become a second home for many like myself.

Thank you Randy, for your hard work, and courage in pushing on, even when the odds started stacking against you.

But especially: Thank you Randy for being you, and for always striving to give everybody a place in the sun.   Even down to your most recent acts, you have always acted unselfishly and with the interests of others at heart.

You certainly don’t deserve what has been happening to you, and I can only hope and pray that you will find peace and happiness in whatever time may be left to you.  My deepest thoughts go with you.

Just Adventure will always be the site that broke my forum virginity.

It was the first forum that I joined and over the last 8 years I have loved conversing with the wide variety of characters that inhabit the site.

Sure, along the way some of the best have disappered, some go and then come back and some new friends have joined. All drawn here by Randy and the people who maintain the site and keep it running. All drawn together to discuss this topic of adventure gaming that we all love. It's like one huge dysfunctional family with Randy at the head of the table.

Before 2003 I never thought that there was places you could go to slag off Myst or regail the wonders of Lucasart. (Who knew that the internet was useful so for something other than porn
)

Words are probably insufficient to thank Randy & Co for setting up this strange corner of the internet and for building it up from nothing to the heady height of over a million visitors a day.

Thanking him for putting up with the hassle that we have put him through at times. The stupid arguments, the winging, the political section  :-X

Thanking him for the many great threads discussing games, for occassionally laughing with us, for telling us off when we misbehave, and for providing us with a platform to promote and celebrate the games we love.

Thanking him for his informative reviews (Example) and articles (Appropriate for tomorrow), his strategy guides that we all read.

Thanking him for his tireless work and effort, at his own expense, to promote the genre through interviews and box quotes and helping developers behind the scenes and in many more ways.

Thanking him for his frank and unwavering opinions that attracted us here and helped to promote and defend the genre when it when it is slighted (Lol).

There is just too much to thank him for and the words seem inadequet so  [smiley=thanks.gif] [smiley=thanks.gif] for all the great memories and for a wonderful site.

I wish him and his family all the best of luck and hopefully good health for the future.

I also hope that in the future, health willing, that he will still contiribute in some fashion, even if it is just to come and chat to the rest of us reprobates, for many years to come.

Even though I have never spoken with Randy, I've been in touch with him for many, many years. He encouraged me from the very first moment to write for JA+ and I've always appreciated the way he managed the site. He's one of the most honest and truthful persons I've met in the internet. Most importantly, he was an immense help during the Scratches development and I believe that things simply wouldn't have been the same without his involvement.

But above all things, Randy has created and maintained what remains the friendliest and most intelligent community I've had the pleasure to be involved with during my virtual exploits. For a long period of time, JA+ was like a second home to me.

So Randy, a huge THANK YOU from me as well and here's to hoping you'll stick around! And of course, thanks for all the fish!

Randy,
Well I too learned of the changing of command here via a private email from a forum member. Your website has been a home to many, a great resource and a platform for the community to voice their opinions and share their indi games.

Just want you to know how much I appreciate your time and dedication over the years to the gaming community.

*hugs*

[size=14] The entire adventure game community owes Randy a debt of gratitude.

He worked tirelessly to develop an invaluable resource for fans of the genre and served as a magnet for a great group of people who have contributed their talents to making JA+ a fun, free, content-rich web site.

As a direct extension of Randy's enduring vision and leadership, this forum community grew, attracting a diverse membership from across the world. The fact that it boasts so many loyal, longtime participants who value intelligent, civil discourse on a broad spectrum of interesting topics is further testimony to his admirably high standards of excellence.

Thank you, Randy for your dedication and hard work as a writer, editor and friend to adventure game lovers everywhere. The good people here care about you and wish you Godspeed in your courageous fight for recovery.

I am so happy to see something for you Randy, in a more prominent place, & devoted to you - it's so much nicer!

Just to repeat some of the things I've already said which I've added to: I've over the years been much more of a lurker than poster until I decided to be a member - one of the draws to this site initially were your series of thoughtful editorials about adventure games. They so reflected my views, I kept visiting to see what else you had written! -always interesting. This is such a good site for the AG community & a lasting testament to your hard work & dedication which makes it what it is today! Thank you!

I'm so sorry Randy, that you have had to let the site go & wish in all of my heart that there maybe some hope for your health.

Randy,

Sad to see you sell the site, but know it was for the best.

I want to thank you for giving me a shot at writing reviews and publishing those interviews. You were always encouraging and willing to give anyone a chance.

I always appreciated your blunt opinions and knew you were being completely honest. You might have rubbed some people the wrong way, but most of us knew you had the best of intentions when helping people out.  Having grown up in Cleveland and New Jersey, I knew where you were coming from. No BSing, speaking your mind, and pure honesty even if it wasn't what people wanted to hear.  You did it because you cared. I think if people only knew how much BS you had to deal with behind the scenes, yet still kept moving forward with this site, then they would understand.

As a matter of fact, it was your brutally honest opinions in the State of Adventure Gaming articles that drew me to the site in the first place.  Your game review of Bloodrayne has to go down as one of the most hilarious I have ever read yet you got the point across magnificently. Although while review was meant to serve as a warning that it was a bad game, I just had to check out those juggsashakin myself - ummm, errrr, ehhhh, for research purposes of course.   :
Needless to say, I found myself laughing my way through the game.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for everything you've done. Now get better and lets see some more of those articles!

Eric

I feel very privileged to have been given the chance to work with Randy these past seven years, first as editor of the JAVE and later as webmaster.

Randy, thank you for being so genuine and full of integrity. Thanks for always being straight with me and saying what's on your mind. Thanks for kicking my butt when it needed kicking.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to write my first-ever game review. Thanks for having such a wicked sense of humor. Thanks for everything you've done for me and for the AG community. Most of all, thanks for being you.

You will be in my thoughts and prayers, always. Please, please get better and come back to visit. I miss you more than I can say.

Like everyone else, Randy inspires me with his stubborn and indefatigable promotion of the adventure genre.    Adventure games would not be the same today without his tireless work.

I also love Randy's writing.  His reviews and article and opinion pieces bring a rare and deeply informed intelligence to the subject.

Randy has also been my good friend for eleven years, sleeping on my couch during E3 week, introducing me to countless interesting people in the business, discussing (arguing?) movies and games and game studio politics, and a million other things.

I look forward to his health improving so he can get back to stirring the pot once more!

Remember, procrastinate now.  Don't put it off!!

I can honestly say that the devotion and tireless work of Randy at JA+ has connected me to the genre as no other contributor or site could. I'm a 49 year old AG-fan and journalist and I can appreciate Randy's work both as a gamer and as a professional writer.
Hats off to the sheer professionalism of Randy. His writing is way up there with journalist community.
Apart from being a highly regarded journalist, he has created by far the most influental and most visited Adventure Game site on the globe. How cool is that? It is the only site I visit daily, and I have always been looking forward to yet another wonderfull contribution by Randy.
Although we have never met, I have the feeling I know you personally, Randy. You have created a true community, and that is something to be extremely proud of.
For that, thank you Randy. I wish you all the very, very best and a speedy recovery if that is at all possible.

I want to thank you Randy for setting the stage to allow a wonderful group of people from all over the world come together to chat about games. This has been done before, but there is something particularly special about your group, judging by the amount of friends I've made here vs. my other forums.
I wish you all the best, Randy, and hope that you continue to deliver your gaming insight and acumen to the comunity via occassional visits.

I was 'into' AGs before I arrived here in Oct 2002, but JustAdventure was very influential in my development into an AG fanatic and collector. I checked out the 2 other main forums for which I have a lot of respect -but as I think everyone agrees, each of the 3 has very distinctive characteristics- and I found in JA a combination of an overall love of the AG genre, enlivened/invigorated discussion and overall camaraderie that drew me here. It goes without saying that Randy deserves credit for this special JA environment.

During the period from 2002 to the present, we've seen many changes in both the AG genre and the forum itself. A number of influential contributors have come and gone and periods of discussion on various earth-shaking subjects,
, whether they be story-oriented vs. puzzle games, political and even religious subjects have come and gone, but always there was a unique life to this forum that Randy, like a patient patriarch, allowed to flourish.

So, overall, Randy should be very proud to be leaving this sort of legacy. It is/was a great contribution to the AG community and, in it's own way helped preserve interest in AGs at a time when the gaming industry was moving in other directions. And so I profoundly thank him for providing this 'garden' for my own interest in adventure games and wish him the very best in the future. My guess is that he still has many an AG story to write!

The future ain't what it used to be!

Congratulations to both the buyer and seller on the transfer of the site and best wishes for a long and successful future to the new owner.

Randy, I wish you the best with your ailments and hope you have a speedy and full recovery.  I am consistently astonished at how many people I meet these days that have licked cancer, and not just prostate cancer, but lung, bone, breast, colon, etc.  Godspeed.

Hi Randy Bubbah,

All I can say is:

[size=24]May the Funk be with you.........ALWAYS.

And, uhm, thank you for all the things you've done for us in the past 7 years or so. Great reviews, straitforward and honest replies on my sometimes on the edge posts, great community-leader, adventure gooroo and to me you are what George Clinton is for Bootsy, bubbah: the flashlight in adventure land. Gloryhallastoopid. snif. :-* (yep, it's a kissing smiley.)

Still Intergalactic Janitor after all these years.

Hi Randy!

Just wanted to add my own humble 2 cents.

I've been a lurker for some years before I first started to post here. I can't remember exactly how I discovered the site, but I remember the fun I had reading your articles and your reviews. Just like Ivinia, I too remember well the Bloodrayne review (juggsashakin, indeed!
). I'm still essentially more of a lurker than a poster, but through here I've discover great games, funny stories and helpful people.

Thanks for providing us with the opportunity to discover not only great gaming info but also a great community here in JA+.

I wish you the best strength to you and your family for your recovery, during these trouble times.

Was wondering if Randy is keeping in touch with any JA+ forum or staff members who could let us know how he is doing from time to time - with his permission of course.

It is bizarre to reflect on how much time has passed since the birth of the adventure game journalism scene on the Internet--in 1997, with the original Just Adventure, owned by Craig White and including Randy Sluganski and Evan Dickens as staff writers.

Fast forward to 2000, as Randy in his role as editor of JA, and me in my role as editor of Adventure Gamers, engaged in an unnecessarily public flame war that was even covered by other adventure sites, in articles that are still available online today. Many foolish decisions were made in those days.

Then fast forward to 2004, where Randy and I finally had the chance to sit down at E3, meet for the first time, have coffee and laugh about some of the silly things we'd done, and shake hands and agree that our common purpose was bigger than our petty differences.

I retired from editor duties later that year, and I'm sad that I never had a second chance to meet Randy and discuss life, and adventure games, in greater detail. During my time as AG's chief editor, the "competition" such as it was inspired and pushed me on a daily basis. Randy's tireless work on behalf of adventure games has made a difference in our genre, I sincerely believe that.

Randy, if you do read this, I'm glad we were able to publicly and privately bury the hatchet when we did. Whatever we may have disagreed on over the years--we agreed on how wonderful this genre was and how passionately we wanted it to thrive. I wish you improved health and hope that your legacy of remorseless love and hope for adventure games is carried on for many years yet to come.
