Downloaded Sanitarium last weekend (from GOG). Though I played it some years ago, and the game itself is ancient, I'm still absolutely blown away by the sheer quality of it. The voice acting is spot on, with every intonation just right. The dialogues are brilliantly written, and the dialogue-tree system is a joy to use. What a totally weird game this is.....! Makes you wonder how the design team came up with a story like this, you can see them hanging over a computerscreen, probably a stack of pizza's and empty Absolut bottle at the side and having loads of fun.

It's been years since I tried Sanitarium.  I got stuck and then distracted and then bought a new computer.... etc.   So I bought the package from GOG on the weekend but for some reason the downloaded data files are corrupted and I must do it all again.   :

I have the disk versions of Sanitarium, Longest Journey and Buried in Time but quite like the idea of playing them without disks and all the compatability issues with XP.

Just this past week, the GOG.com files for Gothic II Gold were corrupted for me, Caroline. But then I realized that downloading them via your browser is pretty iffy and GOG provides a very good "
ownloader" app that fixed the problem.

Have you installed their free app and tried redownloading the files that way?

They also have a good FAQ section on other common problems involving corrupt game files.

Cheers, Terry

Yes Terry, they came in via the downloader.  I bought Riven earlier this year from them.  I'll check out the FAQs before I attempt it again.  Thanks for the tip.    :-*

So far Sanitarium runs smoothly on my W7 system. Had two crashes, One after Alt-Tab, but since Alt-tab doesn't work on a multitude of games, that's no real dealbreaker for me. The other crash was after I forgot the game on my PC altogether for hours on end and it 'froze'. Restarts solved all that.

I loved Sanitarium when I played it but thought it dragged a bit too much. The insect world didn't appeal.

I might have to play it again soon though, as I found it stashed in a box in the loft. It's a sign.

well, yes, I suppose by today's standards it is slow. But since I'm from production year 1961 myself, I can really appreciate that....

And it still looks pretty enough...

The issue was that they presented such different and emotionally involving 'stories' that it became a tad overwhelming.

There's also the fact that the insect world was too alien for me to connect with properly unlike the children's world for example, which I actually found really moving.

Great game though.

Oh, I love Sanitarium, been meaning to replay it soon
I enjoyed the slowness and all of the stories, well, except for the Insect world. I didn't find it appealing either. It reminded me of 80s comic books.

Not only did I dislike the insect scenario, I got stuck there for a long time, wandering amongst those alien hives.  *shudder*

I seem to remember I used a walkthrough at that stage. I just wasn't invested enough in that world to spend too long there. Wasn't there a lot of to and fro-ing with a really slow lumbering character as well?

It's such a shame because it is otherwise an incredible game. I'm glad to see others found that part a let down.

You may be thinking of the Quetzocoatl world. At least I personally found that to be the worst world for to-and-fro-ing, as you have to find and converse with every single ghost, and they all talk ssoo sslloowwllyy.

I actually enjoyed the "insect world" scenario myself -- the alien device puzzle was novel, intellectually challenging, and well integrated into the storyline. The gooey squishiness of everything was unappealing, certainly, but very effective. Dona mentioned that the world reminded her of 80s comic books -- since that's exactly what it was supposed to be, one can hardly fault it for that.

I'm replaying Sanatarium right now. It's such an unique game with an intriguing story that evolves slowly. I'm currently in the Quetzocoatl world which is indeed the slowest of all the chapters.
I find the game even better this time since I've noticed some important details that blew past me the first time. And it makes me understand what a masterpiece it really is.

Sanitarium is a superb game by all means. It still haunts me. As soon as I finish some games I must replay it.

Deleted UserOver the years I've played Sanitarium at least two but more likely three times, (argh darn that pumpkin patch mini-game sequence) but I know for sure that I only actually completed it once.  I can't seem to recall if there was a specific strategy employed or just blind luck in the ending chapter. :-/

I played it only once, but I clearly remember having a bug in the pumpkin patch level, when the boss fight takes place. The character got stuck and there was no way to move him. Needless to say, my last save was a level and a half ago...

And then the ending freaked me out because it was SO familiar, like I'd seen/dreamed it before D: (this happened with other games, too)

Same thing here as I had to start over every time this occurred.  Changing the order of attack in the field somehow seemed to get this on track but I always wondered if it was indeed a bug.  Thanks for confirming.

Although I loved -most- of Sanitarium, the aztec and superhero sequences kinda killed it for me. Otherwise, it was excellent.
