As much as I have been lately captivated by Oblivion's Nehrim mega-mod, I went to Fallout New Vegas tonight and re-fell in love.  I just love the Fallout experience.

Here's a pic of my favorite companion, Cass, who has a mouth on her you wouldn't believe

.

I also relied on Cass a lot in Fallout: New Vegas - especially once I got her some great combat armor and a really good ranged weapon. She just stood back and took down bad guys from afar with deadly accuracy while my trusty robotic sidekick, ED-E zapped them with laser rays from above. In several cases, I never even had to fire a shot.

Oh and yes, she does have a mouth that belies her pretty face.

Cheers, Terry

The problem with followers is : Do you always get the kills/exp for kills/damage that they do?

I was happy to take Virgil, Sodd and Dog along to the cememetary in Arcanum for a nice zombie grind, until I decided to look up if I'm getting the exp for all the zombies they're running ahead to zap.

Apparently I get the exp, but not the kills. And you cannot control them not to attack if an enemy is in sight, so I've had to make them wait outside the gate of the place so that I can soak up all the zombie glory myself.

Sadly, I'm going through potions at a a rate that might be higher than I can afford
, and I may just have to call in their help again soon, when I go broke.  I'm pretty hungry for experience atm. Tho I might just forego on the kills perk.

All of this made me wonder if  followers in NV count as an extension of yourself, and if the points system allows you, the player, to have all the credit/exp. for damage/kills they do?

About NV companions

Fallout: New Vegas, however, does not reward XP increases based on the level of difficulty selected, despite the manual (PC version) stating otherwise. This somewhat alleviates the stress encountered while playing the game simultaneously on Hardcore, as it is not necessary to play it on Very Hard. No additional trophy/achievement is awarded to those who play the game on Very Hard nor do you gain bonus XP.
Unlike in Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas does award XP for kills made by followers. This increases the usefulness of followers and significantly reduces the hassle of having to compete with them for XP.

And I admit I had no idea of this term, although I've seen the effects.....

Nerve
Each companion also has a special attribute referred to in the game as Nerve. Nerve boosts the damage and Damage Threshold of each companion by 5% for each point of Charisma a character has.

So Nerve grants a total bonus of +50% damage and damage threshold to companions with 10 Charisma and only +5% to both at 1 Charisma. A person with a starting Charisma of 1 can boost their companions nerve to the maximum by use of an Empathy Synthesizer or Intense Training, Party Time Mentats (+5), high Survival (so that alcohol adds +3 Charisma) or stacking moonshine with another type of alcohol.
This is most effective with companions that gain increases to their damage, damage threshold or attack speed (movement speed is useless with nerve) upon completion of their companion quests and less important for companions who gain items or abilities not associated with nerve.

Companion nerve combines exceptionally well with Ferocious Loyalty and Spray 'n Pray, the resulting durability can keep companions alive fairly well even in hardcore mode.

Rose of Sharon Cassidy
Hand of Vengeance (15% more damage with Guns)
Calm Heart (+50 Hit Points)

Veronica Santangelo
Bonds of Steel (+4 DT)
Elijah's Last Words (+150% melee attack speed, 25% chance to knock down enemies)

Raul Tejada
Old Vaquero (+33% faster fire rate with revolvers and lever action firearms)

Lily Bowen
Off the Meds (Permanent stat bonuses, psychotic break at 50% health)

ED-E
Brotherhood Examination (+8 DT)
Followers Examination (+5 DAM, +8 DPS, +0.5% Crit Chance and +15 Crit Damage)

Rex
Rey's brain (+25 damage)
Lupa's brain (+10 DT)
Violetta's brain (+50% movement speed)

I plan to give Fallout: New Vegas another spin, as I just bought all the DLC for it, but as we all know, the games using this engine are best played with mods. So does anyone know of any "must have" mods? I plan to do this run with hardcore mode on.

I didn't use any player-created mods with Fallout: New Vegas or its four official DLCs, so can't make recommendations, sorry.

But can tell you that most of the DLCs were a lot of fun and together they add a great deal of exciting, new gameplay.

Enjoy your extended adventures in that amazing, post-apocalyptic universe and let us know what you think.

Cheers, Terry

P.S.

Finally beat that massive cyclops in the original Titan Quest after dying countless times and reached the Oracle.

Now I'm having hard time getting past all deadly Gorgon's in the big cave, but will eventually find the right combo of attack-evade.

Also started the Pirates EP for Two Worlds II and am loving it so far...

I have played through New Vegas once before, so the game won't be brand new to me, but I think this is a great time to play through it once more. I found New Vegas to be a lot better than Fallout 3 (which I have not even considered replaying), and I am looking forward to see another ending than the house one.

I can't exactly say it is a 'must have' but I would highly recommend Fellout NV.

It really makes the game look a lot more realistic.

Hi there! Does this mean you got a new graphics card, Fnord? ..or is the specs of FO:NV such that one can set them to pretty low?  I remember you had a prob with your graphics card at some point in time, and had to revert to your old one.

I often miss Fallout 3 more than I really enjoy FO NV.  I really should go back and play the DLC for it.

I STILL havebn't finsihed the main questline in FO NV! ..because i've been nessing around so much after my experience of finsihing FO 3 too quickly.  But perhaps it's time to push on...

I found a mod that did a similar thing, but thanks for the advice.

I found a used graphics card that was better, but still PCI-E 1.X for less than the price of ½pizza, so I'm at least able to play games like New Vegas. Actually the game seem to run really smoothly, but I guess that is in part due to how much better optimized it is these days.

yes, fps has improved significantly since it's original release and  most bugs have been removed too.

actually F:NV doesn't need any real graphical mods.

I'm curious about the DLC, the ones of F3 where are really good, so i hope they're as original as they were.

I did most of the main quest branches, i just got to complete the NCR and Mr House questlines.

Somehow i like fallout 3 a bit more, the locations are more diverse. New Vegas downtown is nice, but the desert is quite boring and brown.

I think my problem with NV is that I'd been trying to do all possible quests before going to NV, and that is possibly why i became bored with it.  Like you say, the desert eventually seems brown, dull and boring.  If i pick it up again, i'll head for NV.

Glad to hear you at least got some kind of upgrade, Fnord!

I ended up buying F:NV ultimate edition (it was cheaper to buy that then the dlc's individually...lol).

So I too am planning to go othrough it finally. When I first got NV I never made it to vegas, I kept exploring, getting side tracked and doing other things then ended up losing interest hah, I have that problem too much with games lately >_< Never beat Witcher 2 either, or ME3 yet.

I was looking for some mods too and from what I could find browsing nexus were these main ones I think I'm going to give it a try with:

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/44204

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/35998

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/35878

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/43135

Those seem like the best all around mods that add things to the game but don't do anything mess with anything gameplay wise, mainly graphical improvements/more choices.

I wish I could find some good male character faces though, much like fallout 3 I can't make a decent looking character for crap, where's a good Mad Max'ish Mel Gibson face mod when you need one.

The woman in the first screenshot of the first mod that you posted has very odd proportions. Scratch that, it looks grotesque.

Anyway, I ended up with the following mods:

A world of Pain Plenty of new locations to explore, and it is a very highly rated mod, so i take it that they are all well crafted.

New Vegas bounties (both 1 &2 ) New quests

Project reality Graphics updates & tweaks

Classic Fallout Weapons adds weapons from Fallout 1, 2 & Tactics

Farming Bob Farming in New Vegas.

OMG! I looked at some of the other screenshots though...

A World of Pain is an excellent choice, I don't know why I neglected to mention that. Depending on your style of play, later on you might also consider Level Cap 100 which allows you to continue to receive perks after you reach the game's cap.

That first mod is a compliation pack that includes "hundreds" of mods, from bug fixes, character additions, companion fixes (and complete inventories so you can change what they use/outfit them), terrain fixes, to other things, all of which you can toggle off/on.

I'm not sure what that pic is from but it's something you can most likely turn off.

I just got it because it was one of the highest rated/commented things on nexus and it'd be a huge pita to find all those thing sincluded individually and update/instlal them all when this does that all in one package.
