I just finished the adventure game 80 days and all i have to say it is among the most dissapointing and unfinished games i have played.

Before starting a flame war have in mind i have played thousands of games of all types as i am quite old... The reason  it took me so long to play this game is that round the world in 80 days was among my favorite books and movies(the one with Peter Brosnan and Peter Ustinov) and after playing the game when it was released i disliked it immediately even through i runned it on a gaming rig and i was very excited for it...

After some years i decided to force myself playing and finishing it and boy oh boy i had...to say my feelings...out loud....

From the first moment the game starts, even in the cinematic the voice dialogs sound more like gibberish or something translated with an online translator....Or synthesized with a speech generator....
For the love of god...How hard was it to write something that makes sense ? Or make a translation to english ?
They didn't even have to hire a writer or anything...There are thousands of fans that could help with the script.....and the designers could choose the best bits....

And how hard was it to find a english person.....? Again they did not have to hire proffesional actors....
There are thousands of old folks in pubs and coffee shops that talk like they still live in the Victorian England.....
And then the game starts....You are on a port outside of cairo.Your character looks nice but the moment he starts moving everything break down.He moves like a robot and the collition box for everything has one meter of distance.Whenever someone or something is near year you stop dead moving.Even the slightest surface anomaly will stop you and you have to go around that anomaly.....emmm i mean carpets, cats.jars, rocks you know the usual path blocking stuff...Hehh heh...But it gets worse...All npc's are super low modelled with super low textures and they all keep repeating the same 10 phrases....Also there are only 10 variants of them in each city so in every scene there are multiple copies of the same person.

When you actually start roaming through the city you will realise that all doors are locked and all buldings are exact copies...There is nothing to do and the vechicles are pointless because of the horrible collitions. The music also is treated with the same level of quality as there is only one track that repeats itself until the end of the game...This is the sound version of walk like an egyptian of the bangles...ahhhhh

But there is more....between missions the game could have been very interesting on the various transportations methods but it still is an abomination because of the above reasons....Literally there is nothing to immerse you in the game world...They could make a lot of different good looking with good animation npc's  and give them large dialog tree's you could check if you wanted...But although there are many npc's all are the same, sound the same and feel like objects than anything else....
Even the various missions are extremely frustrating......or simply boring and pointless....
IF you choose the normal or hard skill you will quickly get frustrated because the game becomes almost unplayable because you cannot stay on the time limit because of the above reasons....In the easiest setting there is no time limit and an interesting concept goes down the drain as everything else in this game....
And as for the graphics the very thing that made me excited when i first learned about the game they are........beyond mere mortal worlds to describe........
Some screenshots would be better but here goes nothing....
Sure the game boasts some high resolution textures and detailed object and the cities are absolutely huge.
But everything else even the most common graphics assets that are standard in other games are horrible here..For example check the water...It is simply a transparent texture...Games back in 1996 like Terranova strike force centauri or Gl-Quake for the orchid righeous 3d or voodoo 3d cards looked 10 times better than that.....
Or what is about the super low npc models ? Would it kill the framerate too much if all npc had the quality of your character model ?
And why so few variants ? It would not have made the game any slower it was simply a matter of laziness and stupidity from the programmers side.....The same with the repeating dialogs...Was it so hard to have a larger number of voice overs or some dialog trees ?Ofcourse no again a sign of lazyness....
And how hard was it to make at least the main character to animate smoothly ? And was it so hard to have smaller collition boxes ? I mean wolf 3d and ultima underword had per pixel perfect collition dedection back in 1992...........so what happened ?
And i could go on and on but there is no point...

I hope i didn't bothered you much but i thought i had to speak about this game...It could have been so good and it is so bad....for reasons that simply should not exist...Its one thing having untalanted designers but its another when things that can be done by anyone with some common logic and love for something are not done as in this case....(Also a bit of trivia the recent sherlock holms games made by frogware still use the same engine but are much much better simply because of some common sense-though its extremely dated)

To tell you the truth whatever critics I've read on this game were disheartening.

I liked this game a lot. But I don't feel like getting into a flame war over it. To each his own...

To tell you the truth I've played this game for 1 hour (years ago) and it was so buggy that I stopped right away without further thought.

Deleted UserI bought this game almost five years ago and I agree that at least the graphics were terribly buggy when I first tried playing it. I do recall back then hearing the game being described as ‘hardware hungry.’ A few months later when I was forced to upgrade my graphics card these issues appeared to have been resolved. I would really like to side with Nik on this one as I found the  game (although somewhat different in that I realize that 80 Days doesn’t really fit all that well within the definition of an adventure game) very enjoyable. I can’t help disliking the save system but driving the antique automobiles around the cities was really cool. Sadly though, at the end I wasn’t able to complete the game since Oliver was not adroit at filling the furnace in time with the game requirements.    >

@Nicolas:
My experience was very different from the one you had. I liked 80 Days.

For me, the voices weren't gibberish nor did they sound electronically synthesized. Also, I didn't notice any collision planes that appeared to be overextended or used inappropriately. And Oliver didn't move like a robot (could this be a vid card issue?).

Concerning music, the game I played had a lot more than one song. The only place I recall hearing "Walk Like an Egyptian" is at the end of the Cairo location.

I also think parts of the game are quite funny. For instance, I got a kick out of all of the disguises Oliver is obliged to wear. Some of them are a real hoot.

I enjoyed the different modes of transportation although I did best with the flying carpet. And as one who has no sense of direction, I greatly appreciated the mini navigation map that sits on the screen throughout the game. I loved exploring the game's four cities without having to worry about getting lost.

The repetitive appearance and dialog of NPCs didn't bother me. I experienced no technical problems.

I can't comment on difficulty levels as I played the game at the Tourist (easiest) level. This gave me time to savor the gameplay without always having to work against the clock.

Of course, I didn't like *everything* about 80 Days. For example, I didn't much care for the predetermined save points. But all-in-all, I think 80 Days is a pretty good game.

Well to be clear of something i loved the premice the game had.As i said before round the world in 80 days was and still is one of my favorite books and movies i have read and seen.Yet the game IS the most dissapointing game i have played.I don't say that 80 days is just a bad game.I have played thousands of games and the majority of those games were simply bad. They had a bad concept, bad ideas, bad story, bad graphics and i could go on and on.80 days was a game altogether different. It was based on an amazing premice, fantastic story, they had an existing game engine and they had made other games and thousands of fans had expressed what they should give attention to their next game based on their previous sherlock holm game shortcummings....

Having made myself of that i must stress that i always have the latest and greatest on behalf of gaming riqs. The game would run easily at 200+ fps....at max res, with modded nvidia settings to aplly 16xq antialiasing so my experience had nothing to do with system problems. After playing games like OUTCAST,Deus Ex,Omicron the nomad soul, farehnait, oblivion,Shenmue 1 and 2,Shadow of Destiny,FAble,Dreamfall,Beyond good and Evil i expect something WAY more as far as COLLITION DETECTION,ANIMATIONS,MODELS QUALITY AND MODELS VARIETY goes.....
I hope you have played some of those games and if you have you would realise that some of those are quite old as the first shenmue, omicron the nomad soul and outcast were released during the late 1999 year........

I tried to NOT mention new games and BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL,FABLE,FAREHNAIT are from 2003 with the newest game mentioned above is oblivion.

IF YOU didn't had the luck playing the above games i STRONGLY RECOMMEND you do (Shenmue can be played with an emulator and there is even an hdr plugging(There is even a hdr pluggin and dx9 renderer for deus ex !!! ) -and trust me the game still looks good after a decade !!!!!!!!!!! )

As far as sound goes i don't know what version you played of the game Carla. If you know french( i wish i did) and played the french version of the game i quess the game sounded nice.Yet the english version IS a incoprehensable synthesized mess. And about the music THE BACKGROUND MUSIC WAS A NO LYRICS VERSION OF THE WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN SONG THAT WAS HEARD ONCE IN THE END OF EGYPT.....

If you had played the above games then you wouldn't even mention to me that the music is ok....

OUTCAST had.....music by the moscow orchestra....REALLY I  am not making these...!!!!!!!!!!!

Omicron the nomad soul had music by the David Bowie band......

Shenmue 1 and 2 had orchestra music....

And
eus EX ,Dreamfall and especially Beyond Good and Evil had some of the most memorable electric-classical music i can think of.

The challenge levels were broken because of the above reasons of the bad collition detection ,bad scripting, bad  animations etc...And as i said before there was no reason to explore or even talk with any npc's as they just looped 10 dialogs over and over

AND A FINAL NOTE....!!!
I DIND'T WANT JUST TO BASH THE GAME...

Actually if another company or even Frogware themselves put their act together and make a remake of this game (As they have made a couple of steadily better sherlock holmes sequals ) I would be more than willing to give them another chance and buy their game.Yet i could not let this game go by without expressing what i felt about it....

Disturbing, at any case, how games can be awful and great at the same time...
