I generally pay no attention to these things, but had to agree with this one. "A beautiful game, but it still bites" Rating 57%.  I think the ending sentence in the review sums it up nicely:

But when letters, news clippings, and journal entries recount exciting events while Van Helsing is stuck rummaging through museum shelves for knick-knacks, you can't shake the feeling that all the fun is taking place somewhere else.

I'm actually enjoying this game - the graphics are quite nice and the puzzles fairly straight forward. It's not overly challenging, just good old fashioned entertainment.

57% is on the low side by me, I'd give it a solid 70% -

What?

I enjoyed it too -- for pretty much the same reasons as Inland.

Deleted UserI haven't had time to play much yet, but I just had to come and have a quick rave about the nice music, atmosphere, etc. - and those graphics!!

I have not installed my new hardware yet -I'm still playing with exactly the same specs as in the last 18 - 20 months, and in all that time I have not seen such breathtaking graphics. (Ignore what I said about Mass Effect) The textures, the colours, the lighting - the attention to detail!   8-)
For instance - notice that the clock in Mina's drawing room is ticking; see the circling birds, and flapping fabrics; smooth textures (like glass) looks tangibly smooth; rough textures look as if you'd scratch your hand if you touched your screen; the foliage detail is divine, etc. etc. etc.
Just gotta love it!    [smiley=cool.gif]

I think I'll just stay with Castlevania.

Ah! Too late! I've been sucked
into the abysmal void!

I sat and played until 3 A.M this morning.  Too bad all my noisy housemates who wouldn't let me sleep nice and late as should be my prerogative on a Sunday morning, don't understand that one has to play dark, creepy games at night time, to savour the full atmosphere of it. And a gal needs her morning sleep so that she can play at night again, doesn't she?   [smiley=sleeping.gif]

No matter - I'm currently in Egypt, searching for the very origin of Vampirism, and as the game is not currently very spooky, I suppose daytime will do for now!    [smiley=detective.gif]

Chrono, I don't know if your'e talking about about the NES version of Castlevania, but I actually saw a PC DOS version advertised on the internet a while ago, and decided that I shall resist!

As I said, I must stop fiddling with old games now... I think it's more of a challenge to get them to play, than it is to actually play them, once I get them going.
No, rather focus on the pleasures of an easy install, sound that works beautifully, coherently and in perfect synchronisation with divine graphics - doesn't that sound a lot more relaxing?

Way too many logic puzzles for me in this game! I don't mind them occasionally but it seems this game has one everytime you turn around. I can usually complete them (I probably take much longer than most people) but I find them tedious.

I'm currently stuck (for several hours now) at that picture puzzle by the grate in Dracula's castle. I have no clue what is expected of me. Frankly, it's getting to the point that I don't care anymore. I probably won't finish this game.

I don't buy download-only games. Never have, never will........Mike

Mini-clue --
Spoiler AlertSounds like you need to ask an expert. Who do you know (in the game) who might be able to help you translate symbols?

I'm not surprised you're stuck on that one. It's a multi-step puzzle that is based on colors, shapes, and the relative positions of the tiles. You'll need to experiment with it. Or if you don't want to do it at all, check the walkthrough --> ***here*** which has some pictures.

Okay Traveler, I'm sold. I wasn't planning on getting this title based on some reviews but you twisted my arm just enough. Good music, atmosphere, graphics and Dracula to boot. Now I can't resist. Hopefully, I can find some time to play.

just completed it...really really short game but then i was using the spacebar all the time..
yeah the graphics are great, the backdrops are stunning esp later in the game. lacking in atmosphere for a game like this and not scary at all but very pretty nontheless. a few stupid puzzles like trapping the coachman and a bit too much random combining stuff but mostly good. reasonable voice acting and decent sound. but the ending!?!?  :
officially the WORST ending to any game i have ever played :-/ :-/ glad the game was so short cos i would of been pissed if it took me ages only to get that. what a letdown, no final confrentation and an ending scene that doesnt make sense and lasts 10 seconds. i guess they ran out of cash or couldnt be bothered.

still i enjoyed it, but Bloodlines aint gotta worry about losing the best Vamp game title thats for sure.

Hang on, Masher - I'm not quite sure if this  is entirely your cup of tea, as there's not really a lot going on actionwise. This is a real traditional adventure game, which as you know, I can tolerate with a bit of patience. However, no combat, and your character only walks - you cannot even make him run.  So although it is a lovely game - there's not really much in it for action fans. Dangerous Dave is also right in one never completely being scared out of one's wits - if thats what he's implying about the atmosphere.

I enjoyed the atmosphere, but it's not quite Call of Chtulu or Doom; -about on par with Witcher Atmosphere, but minus the combat.
There's a lot of darkness and horror implied in the story though, in what you learn about how Count Dracula came to be a vampire.

Also, I thought the puzzles are cool, but theyr'e not everyone's cup of tea - a lot of them are logic puzzles like Andromus and Caroline and JKing would enjoy, and some of them are inventory puzzles.

I haven't had a chance to finish yet, so I cannot comment on the ending, unfortunately.
Why don't you try out a demo first?

Btw, I think that the "Legacy of Kain/ Blood Omen/ Soul Reaver" series, is a vampire series that would be right up your alley, Masher.

Don't know how strong your stomach is for lots of blood and decapitation, but if you enjoy that, try out either Bloodrayne 1 or 2-  another vampire based title, with lots and lots of blood and action.

For a reallly creepy atmosphere, and some real survival horror, try out  Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth.

I've just ordered Clive Barker's Undying; which also really sounds like your cup of tea.  Will let you know about that one some time in the future.

I was getting all excited at the mention of logic puzzles.

And I perked up at the nice scenery and the not terribly scary atmosphere.

Then I cooled off at the mention of inventory.

Then I REALLY lost interest when I read Jenny's hint to Dangerous Dave about talking to someone.

No.  On balance, not my cup of tea.

Deleted UserThere's minimal talking, and the inventory puzzles are very, very easy. Nothing like the convoluted stuff in Tunguska or the Agatha Christie games.  Probably more straightforward and logical even than the inventory puzzles in the Broken Sword series.

It's the logic puzzles that people are complaining is too difficult. But there are clues provided for those.

We're so alike in some things. Can you believe I did the same thing and looked up a review. The dialogue and inventory put me off, but maybe the logic part is worth the annoyance of inventory and conversations.

Spoiler AlertThe person you talk to gives you a book with symbols and some translations. It's actually a fun puzzle once you have that book.
Don't write off the game so soon. I was pleasantly surprised by it, even though I'm not a great fan of Dracula.

Dialogue and inventory items put some ppl off?!? tbh i hate logic puzzles tho, games like Myst/Riven bore me to death, tried to get into Black Dahlia but just couldn't, the atmosphere was great but the puzzles were way too hard, too similiar, too boring and just not my thing at all. much prefer the item/inventory stuff in adventure games. i did really like Farenheit/Indigo Prophecy tho, hopefully there will be a sequel to that.

This is definitely a more traditional adventure game but theres still some logic puzzles in it and as someone said the inventory ones are really easy, probably the easiest out of any game ive played.

I'm pretty sure i spoke to him to get that as most of these wont let u attempt the puzzle unless u have the info to do them. it showed about 8 symbols but not what they ment (except for maybe 2 of them) so it was pretty useless.. maybe i did miss something.

and yeah the graphics are far from bad, heres some pics i took..

So now you have some clues. Keep in mind the symbols are pictograms and try to match them up.
