Ok, I'm doing some kind of diary here, starting with the second round of the group mode. You can do your own in here. And all the rest you want to talk about regarding the EURO. The prediction game didn't get off the ground, but anyway, I give you my inofficial predictions (in brackets) so far:

SWI vs. CZE 0-1 (1-1)
POR vs. TUR 2-0 (2-1)
AUS vs. CRO 0-1 (1-1)
GER vs. POL 2-0 (2-1)
ROM vs. FRA 0-0 (0-1)
NET vs. ITA 3-0 (2-1) yes, from the start I think the Dutch win the group...I had no idea it would be THAT clear, though...
ESP vs. RUS 4-1 (3-0)
GRE vs. SWE 0-2 (1-1) worst game, by far

CZE vs. POR 1-3 (1:2)
The Portuguese were a little smarter and they have Cristiano Ronaldo (I bet even KMS knows who that is). The Czechs were not bad, though.

SWI vs. TUR 1-2 (2-1)
The first half resembled mud wrestling and the Swiss profited from this and a little bit of luck. The second half returned to almost normal conditions and both sides ran up against each other constantly. They both had to win in order to have a realistic chance to reach the final rounds.
In the end the Swiss missed to score after a counter attack with 4(!) against only 1 defender and the Turks scored a very nice goal in the last minute. That's very bad, because Switzerland as a host is already done. But it's their fault for missing that one opportunity you rarely get. I didn't know who to root for...I have friends from Turkey...but I feel bad for the hosts both dropping out (Austria is up against us, so there is no chance for them after they lost to Croatia already).
By the way, this match was great despite the very bad conditions. There was virtually no midfield tactics because of the wet ground, just action from one side to the other, very fast attacks and exciting to the last minute.

CRO vs. GER 2-1 (1-2)
>
:-/ :-[
It was pretty awful. They played like the German teams used to play for most of the time I can remember. But our current team is capable of winning against any team, I really believe that. Anyway, they started on the wrong foot, didn't show any change during the first half, got the 2-0...then after a while they tried a little harder and scored that goal. But it was too late. Now we have to not lose against Austria. That should be no problem, seeing as they miss the goal all the time.

AUS vs. POL 1-1 (1-1)
Seriously, Austria was way better than the Poles. Just as they were better than the Czechs, last week. They had chances in the first half and there it shows that they just can't hit it. That's the problem. They are a good team with fighting spirit till the end, but they take too long. Poland's Brazilian (they got one in the last minute) scored a clearly offside goal. Whatever the line man was doing, I don't know. Austria equalised in the last minute with a penalty, which was well deserved because first, it was one. Second, they already should have got one earlier. Too bad we have to kick them out on Monday.

ITA vs. ROM 1-1 (1-0)
Again, Romania was the better team, plain and simple. They have gone in the lead during the second half, but Italy equalised immediately afterwards. Italy is current world cup champion, but they don't have a team, that's the truth. Another good game, that had just about everything, something you didn't expect on paper, if you think back ten years or something.

NET vs. FRA 4-1 (3-2)

Absolutely fabulous. The Dutch scored the lead early on. The French at first played like they did against Romania. After some time they turned around and completely controlled the game. Just that one thing that you need to do to win, didn't work: scoring actual goals. The Dutch had been under pressure and they made a lot of mistakes and France could have taken over, but it didn't happen.
In the second half the Dutch scored the 2-0 after one counter attack, preceding half an hour of nothing from their side. It was only France all the time before that. And the French continued to rush and finally got their goal. But only another attack later Robben produced the 3-1 out of a seemingly impossible angle. The goalie didn't think he would shoot from there...
The French tried all this time, but in the end Snijder got in front, back to the defenders, turned around and put the ball right under the bar, a beautiful goal. I think they only shot about half a dozen times and scored 4 out of those. That's effectiveness.
To be fair, this win was at least one, possibly two goals too much. The French tried and tried, you could get really sorry for them.
The Dutch are the hottest favorite right now. Remember, they beat the world cup winner and the world cup second in a row...and they didn't just beat them, they beat them with 3 goals difference...that's a lifetime in football.
And I have rarely seen such fast and precise counter attacks. Beau-ti-ful.

The funny - or sad - thing is, if Romania wins against Netherlands next time, France and Italy can play whatever they want, they are BOTH out of the tournament!

3 best games
SWI vs. TUR (bad conditions didn't hurt this one)
NET vs. ITA (awesome, part 1)
NET vs. FRA (awesome, part 2, with a much better opponent)

3 worst games
GRE vs. SWE (sorry, Aya...but that was horrible)
ROM vs. FRA (ok, to be fair...I was sick in the head from the sun - not sure about the word, we call it "Sonnenstich" which translates to "sun sting" - and missed about half of it)
CRO vs. GER (Croatia wasn't that great, Germany was baaaad, so...)

As for predictions:
I got one correct, 10 points total (if 2 points for goal difference is used). I think I can be happy we didn't play.

I post some for tomorrow:
SWE vs. ESP 1-3 (mmmh...or 2-2 maybe? somehow I see 4 goals
and I really want Spain to go far this time)
GRE vs. RUS 2-1 (because I'm positive that they can improve just a bit)

I wrote this post in another forum on May 31st (PROOF!), so far I'm not too far off:

[size=20]Group A

I don't think Portugal will have any problems qualifying from this group, possibly as first. They have the most in form player in the world, and no obvious weaknesses in their lineup. The Czech Republic is still a very strong team especially on defense and goalkeeper, and will probably follow them. Koller at 35 is as lethal as always, Baros and Sionko will probably cause much damage as well. This was not a good draw for Switzerland who will have to do wonders to disqualify one of the two. Turkey is a weird team with some quality players, capable for the best and the worst; confidence is very important to them. If they get a good result in the first match against the Portuguese anything's possible, if they suffer a big defeat they will go back with 3 losses.

Prediction: Portugal, Czech Republic

[size=20]Group B

This is probably the easiest group to guess, Germany and Croatia are much better teams than Austria & Poland. Keep an eye for Mario Gomez, the fake German who plays for Stuttgart. Austria will need to surprise Croatia in the opening match if they want to have a chance, but my opinion is that they're the weakest team of the competition so the home advantage won't give them much. The Polish had an amazing qualification round, most probably due to Portugal sleeping half the way, but they're just happy to be there and will not avoid 4th place..

Prediction: Germany, Croatia

[size=20]Group C

The names alone make this a very interesting group, and it gets more interesting if you consider that the four teams met each other (in pairs) in the qualifiers. In my opinion, Italy is the best team of the world and I vote for them to win the title. I get dizzy just by looking at their roster and I can't think of any weaknesses in their game. They are superior to the other teams of the group both in players quality and in tactics. The Frenchies barely made it to the competition, they have nothing on Italy and if the other teams guard their key midfielders well (Ribéry in particular) they will beat them. Romania finished above Netherlands in the qualifiers, can they do it again? I watched them thrash Russia on March and I was impressed, but other than that I don't know them very well. The Dutch are an enigma (as usual), they have great attackers but IMO not the best coach they could find.

Prediction: Italy, Netherlands

[size=20]Group D

Let me start by saying that I think Russia is an amazing team. I wouldn't be surprised if they went all the way. Anyone who watched Zenit thrash everyone that stood in their way (including a 4-0 against Bayern) knows that, and the Russian team has plenty of Zenit players. Pogrebnyak and Zyrianov who could play for any team in the world. What can I say about Spain? They obviously have the talent, but can we ever trust them not to screw up? Who can bet money on them getting four points off Sweden and Russia? Speaking of Sweden, I watched them against Slovenia recently and I wasn't impressed, but this could be deceptive.

And now, allow me to elaborate on the European Champions. Greece is easily the most surrealistic team of the competition. How else can you describe a football team with:

-Only one left footed player in their roster, who will probably never play. That's right, Greece will most likely start and finish the Euros with no left footed players on the field.
-Not one central defender who can run 100 meters in under 30 seconds.
-No wingers whatsoever! (world record)?

Add to the above that Greece is very slow compared to the average European team, that some key 2004 players are in their mid-30s and still in the starting lineup, and that if you ask a Greek player to cross the ball he will take a pen and mark a little X on it. Furthermore, forget the constant pressing in 3/4 of the field you watched in Portugal. The current Greek time, unless something changes dramatically, waits for their opponents and doesn't start pressurizing until half field.

The result of all of the above? Greece gained more points than any other team in the qualifiers against Turkey and Norway.   Does that make sense to you? No more than them winning the European Championships 4 years ago, I bet... I fear that this was caused to the bad condition of our opponents and this has disoriented our players.

Our main forces remain in the axis: The central defenders (just don't run them), the defensive midfielders and, unlike 2004 (when our best attacker Nikolaidis was injured and never played a full match), a forward who can actually score with half a chance. Fanis Gekas was top scorer of last year's Budesliga. However, Zagorakis (best Euro 2004 player) and Tsiartas (the man who came from the bench to change the course of the matches against Spain, Russia and the Czech Republic with his accurate passes) have hung their boots and they will be missed.

Prediction: Russia, Spain

Greece were a discrace the other day. Spending 10 mins at a time just passing it between their defenders. No interest in attacking.

Boooooring.

So far Holland have impressed me the most (2 utterly fantastic performances, but can they maintain it, esp if they don't score first.). Spain has looked not bad, Portugal have been a tad lucky so far.

I do not disagree with you, of course. I watched the match with Aya and we were dismayed by the way we chose to play. But let's wait until they've played all three matches before we condemn the team, we're not the best football team in Europe but I know we can play better than that.

anyone can play better than that... that game was a disgrace indeed, and like some reporter said about the rest of greece's games, if we're gonna go out, at least let's go out with dignity... hands down gre-swe was the worst game of the tournament, followed by fra-rom... other than that i believe we're watching an amazing euro this year, best one i've seen since probably 1988... last night's game (net-fra) was stunning!!

my predictions on 1st round winners:
group a: portugal, czech rep
group b: croatia, germany
group c: netherlands, romania (i believe net will throw net-rom, for various reasons)
group d: spain, russia (i am fairly certain that if greece wins russia tonight they'll qualify, but i'm fairly certain they won't win :
)

(those predictions are right now... if i posted them in the beginning italy and france would be for group c and spain and greece for group d)

SWE vs. ESP 1-2 (1-3)
Oh, how I loved that they scored in the last minute...
True, they were not dominant during any but the first quarter of an hour of play. But Sweden clearly only wanted 1 point. What the hell kind of attitude is that? It's not that they played defensive, but they didn't do anything for offense and foolishly tried to hold the draw for the entire second half.

GRE vs. RUS 0-1 (2-1)

I don't know...it wasn't bad as the first game, but reading what our resident Greek members posted, it's spot-on. The choice of players is so limited that you end up with 3 central attackers trying to wing. Which might work if there was some kind of plan in midfield. And then the defense doesn't work any more, either. Thanks to a young Russian team that doesn't yet turn a chance into an actual goal, it's only a narrow defeat. I have to admit I didn't follow the qualification at all. I only know that Greece scored the most points. I expected them to be a little more dangerous.
That goal was hilarious or brilliant, take your pick. I don't think Nikopolidis is the only one to blame, possibly not to blame at all that much, because his defenders didn't anticipate what happened, either.

Sweden has to go for the kill, as does Russia. It will be interesting to see what happens when the Swedes have to march and create actual chances instead of pulling up a wall in front of their goal. I think we may get an open game. I'm strangely looking forward to this. But so far, 3 out of 4 games in this group have been difficult to watch. Like Aya said, the EURO in general is that good, you notice a bad game like a sore thumb. Especially Switzerland and Austria put their team spirit on display and I am very sad for both of them to drop out...but it has to be that way.
[Uhm...no. It's not true. Actually, Sweden will be qualified with a draw, because of goal difference. Meh. Will they try to pull off this waiting game yet another time? Still, I stick with my prediction/wish.]

Thanks Alkis and Aya, it was very interesting to get first-hand opinions about the Greek team.
Very well done on your group analysis, Alkis. I tell you my guesses back then:

A - Portugal, Switzerland
Mainly because I can't imagine both hosts dropping out early, but also because I have seen Switzerland playing pretty well before and, as Alkis said, Turkey is completely dependent on their shape that day. They can be very strong, but also very disappointing. I have noticed that the Czechs are in too much of a renewal to deliver consisten performances.

B - Germany, Croatia
Ok, you don't need me to explain the first choice. And similarly I think Croatia is the second consistently strong team in here. Poland isn't that great these days and Austria I figured would be the worst.

C - Netherlands, Italy
You may or may not know, I was never a big fan of the way Italy played. Italian players are giants in Europe and the world, but the national team with their catenacchio (sp?) made my predictions go mostly 1-0. I figured they would qualify, but with underwhelming results. Well, like the world cup, pretty much.
Ever since the EURO 2006 the Dutch seem to be a force in fast-paced, simply fun to watch tournament football matches. I had no doubt they would make it, not being aware that Romania beat them in the qualification, though.

D - Spain, Sweden
I wish for Spain to once not screw it up, yes. The team during world cup showed that they can easily make it far in the tournament if they keep it together. I thought Sweden was stronger than they now seem to be. I don't know a lot about Russia, although Zenit's win should have told me something. And finally, I didn't believe that Greece would repeat that "miracle", in fact, probably wouldn't even make it to the final rounds. Because, you know, history tells us that winners of a tournament do incredibly bad in the next one. That's from WC to EURO and the other way around.

The way I see it now:

A - Portugal, Turkey
I don't know...I think they will beat the Czechs, because they turned that game against Switzerland and they are now on euphoria road and with Turkey, everything is possible.

B - Germany, Croatia
We will not lose against Austria...that's all it takes!

C - Netherlands, Romania
Or not, if the Dutch are a fair-play team and don't take that easy road to get rid of two potential "strong" opponents...surprise me, please...in that case I pick France, because they didn't play bad against the Dutch. Yes, now I say Italy will drop out.

D - Spain, Russia (I could stick to Sweden, but regarding Zenit winning UEFA Cup, I can see this happening)
Russia can go to the final rounds, but I don't imagine them going all the way, but thinking back to 2004...hell, who knows?

Tomorrow then:
SWI vs. POR 2-1 (well, how about that? I don't care if it's wrong, we don't play anyway, I want this to happen, they deserve this!)
TUR vs. CZE 1-0 (many chances, just one goal at around the 70 minute mark, then the Turks still rush, do not try to hold it and the Czechs can't get their opportunities while trying to defend...)

SWI vs. POR 2-0 (2-1)
Alright, Portugal obviously only plays with the secondary option. But it's nice to see the Swiss go with a win. They deserved a lot more. My prediction wasn't that daring, of course. Now, the same thing is bound to happen with Romania come Tuesday. Poor Italy and France. Goodbye.

TUR vs. CZE 3-2 (1-0)
Well, well, well...I still don't believe this. It wasn't that big of a fight as the result might suggest. Only started at about 60 minutes into the game. Half an hour is enough to turn a 0-2 to your favor. Like I said, and Alkis said it before, but I know this to be true, with Turkey you can never tell. 2-2 would have given us the first of those new penalty shootout decisions. But no, Nihat scores another one and they win it. It would have been interesting to see what happens if after Volkan had to be replaced by Tuncay, how he would have done in a penalty shootout after the Czechs managed a 3-3 against him. But they did not. And I think Turkey would probably still have won, without an actual goalie. LOL
If they Czechs should have been given the penalty or free kick - someone told me that dangerous play is indirect free kick, not penalty - and shoot the 0-3...whatever, the Turks would have won 4-3 or 3-3 and then Tuncay in the shootout, like I said above, take it from there.
This is already a crazy EURO. I hope it's not getting boring in the finals because of that overload...
Still, even when turning this result, the whole match doesn't change my top 3 of games. It was too little before the weirdness began.

Now...this will be difficult...

POL vs. CRO 0-0
Not even against the B of Croatia, they will win, haha. Not without offside goals...

AUS vs. GER 1-3
It can't be close. Don't let it be close...

well, the czechs got what they deserved... they just fell apart after turkey scored and then that idiot of a goalkeeper (supposedly one of the best in the world) did..... what he did (it's funny how it was the goalie that "killed" both the czechs and the greeks in one instant :
)... but yes, it would have been interesting to see penalty kicks with tuncay in the goal! overall though, the turks showed us what to do when you are behind - pressure... we didn't play bad vs russia, but we never really become threatening either

today i don't believe the germans will have any probs vs austria... and i hope the other game will not be like por-swi last night (yes, i am getting spoilled now!
)... i say germany wins and poland either wins or draws

POL vs. CRO 0-1 (0-0)
I see, I have been too good to Poland. Klasnic, way to go!

AUS vs. GER 0-1 (1-3)

Looks like it was thrilling, but like demonstrated in the other two games, Austria can't score. And in this match you never had the feeling they could even accidentally stumble the ball behind the line. Then again, almost the same could be said about us...especially and literally, Gomez. He couldn't stumble the freaking ball behind the line, which was all that he needed to do. Wow. He's cursed. Like Klose, who had been cursed a while before he became the man of the tournament two years ago. Both need to score to set something free, but...can we afford to wait that long?

Aya, aren't you a bit harsh on Cech (sp?)? Something like that could happen to Lehmann, could have happened to Kahn. The ball was wet. I'm not aware of his track record all that much. And Nikopolodis wasn't the only one to blame for the funniest goal in recent memory, either. Or maybe he was. I'm not sure. Only that it was very funny. Obviously, not for you.  :-X

actually it was very funny to me too :
nikopolidis was certainly the one to blame... after his mistake, you could blame the defenders for not covering the open goal, but that would be like saying the drunk driver wasn't totally to blame cause the pedestrians didn't dash out of the way! (the drunk in this case is nikopolidis!)

btw, is it just me (being spoiled now) or is the 3rd round really going downhill? i got bored out of my mind during both games tonight... ok, maybe not as bad as gre-swe or fra-rom from round 1, but definately worse that any other game from the first two rounds... please tell me it's gonna pick up for the qfinals

at least the netherlands are playing tomorrow... that should hopefully be a great game (while ita-fra will probably suck)... i believe the dutch will let romania win (or, if not "let", at least not play their fullest and keep most their main players out to rest)... italy will beat france in the other game, but it will not matter

Ha, way to avoid the initial question, Aya!
In case of Clooney, I'm not sure staying inside the goal was the better option. But if you run out you got to be sure to get the ball, right.

Well, the other game in a group is not important any more. The match that decides about the second finalist is partly boring, because they are more careful than before. One mistake could be the last. One team tries to lure the other one, causing them to play less attractive. I am totally talking about Germany. Those matches have been that way, except for the last 20 minutes of TUR vs. CZE. Especially yesterday's game, because we didn't need to win. I wasn't thrilled to see that many chances for Austria, but ok.

Perhaps today Italy and France will open up and play fast and furious. A draw is (probably) not enough. The circumstances for whoever qualifying are a little complicated...I'd rather not try to think about it. The "other game" will probably look like the "other games" so far. Then again, I can only watch one game and therefore I don't worry too much about the "other game".

I expect/hope that Russia and Sweden will end up the best game among the "important games". The "other game" with Spain and Greece, well, same thing. Probably worse regarding the shape the Greek are in right now.

So, long story short. Yes, this round is less attractive. Not less exciting, though. And not less remarkable, either. But I think the finals will be great. I really don't believe that Germany will play the same way against Portugal. Because they can't.

By the way, something I dislike:
Why did they decide to keep A/B and C/D respectively between each other until the final? This means that we are likely to see two teams of the same group in a semi final. I hate this idea. It's stupid. I'd rather have that happen in the final than making sure A/B plays against C/D in the final. Takes away half of the possibilities for finals!!
Disastrous novelty, if you ask me.

NET vs. ROM 0-1
Although the B team of the Dutch can probably beat some A teams in this tourney. Let's not forget that Romania is a smart team and they already won against the Dutch (and didn't lose once), plus finished first in the group. Not sure if Netherlands played with all their stars back then.

FRA vs. ITA    who cares? uh...i mean... 2-0 (I'd say 2-1, but games rarely end that way and I think France played better against the Dutch)
Will they learn about the results in the other game? I hope not. Because I want to see a good game here.

there was an initial question?! and it was the way he ran out, not the fact that he did... he actually wasn't sure what he was doing... i think he thought the ball was going out

i hope swe-rus will be a good game too, which is why i'll watch that live and save gre-spa to watch taped later... ita-fra wasn't too bad last night... maybe the best game of the 3rd round (but haven't watched net-rom yet, i'll be doing that later today)

i agree... i really hate that... it's ok to cross a-b and c-d for the qfs, but then it should go a-c b-d so that there are no chances to have the same games again (although i don't believe we will in this case... i predict por-cro and net-spa for the semis - sorry elfstone!)

for tonight i hope greece at least scores a goal :
amazing how there's no middle ground for this team... either top or bottom....... oh well... as for rus-swe, russia shouldn't have any major probs

The SPain vs Greece game will probably suck tonight.

Spain will play their reserve team and Greece never attack anyway so I expect a 0:0 draw.

In the other game I think Sweden will go through. They have more tournament experience.

Germany 3:2 Portugal

Decent game for the first qrt final.

Surprising result as Germany didn't look that great the other night, but played well tonight.  Nice push by Ballack for the winner

NET vs. ROM 2-0 (0-1)
Only saw a summary. B team of Netherlands beats Romania. Further cementing the Dutch as the cup's favorite. And, most importantly, proving the cynics among us wrong.

FRA vs. ITA 0-2 (2-0)
Alright, that was the other way around. Italy played smart, Luca Toni with tons of chances. But who knows what would have happened if Ribery didn't take himself out of the game. His own fault, sure, but you can't help and think this would have been a little bit tougher for Italy. Then the red card buried the French before they even started and they still played strong for as long as they had hope. Too bad for them. Anyway, well controlled by Italy.

GRE vs. ESP 1-2 (0-0)
Again, just the summary. And another B team...not playing to not win this. Although it really wouldn't have mattered in this case. Greece scored a goal and a great one at that...didn't Charisteas do it like that back when they won the cup? Every team scored at least one goal, right? That's nice.

RUS - SWE 2-0 (3-2)
I had the 3-2 down before the match with Turkey. And this might have been a similar game if Sweden shaped up. But they had no chance. These days I can't bear to watch long passing to try and put a lucky header in the net. And turns out, Russia couldn't be caught that way. Whenever the Swedes played fast ball, they had their chances. Too bad they couldn't keep up with the young Russians. And I don't think Sweden is a slow team...I don't get it. They destroyed their game from day one by playing reserved. We almost made the same mistake...
Best 3rd round game, despite a weak Sweden. Russia played football to die for, seriously. If they keep this up, NET vs. RUS will be one hell of a storm. I especially admired that they never tried to blatantly hold the ball and waste time. They were out for the 3rd goal and if they had been lucky enough, they could have won 5-0 or something.

Hahahaha...eat it!

I have to admit, I didn't think they would be that good. My prediction was based on Germany winning in overtime. I suspected that after bringing back memories of days and teams past and long forgotten, the match against Austria could only be explained as tactics. Risky, but I think Jogi Löw set them up to control the game, regain confidence and don't risk too much in offense. Turns out they hardly took any risk at all. And some people say, this was done on purpose, because
a) Austria hardly ever puts the ball where it belongs, no matter how often you let them try
b) Portugal in the back of the mind, they should be led to believe they can beat us with eyes closed
Even if that is true, I'd say
a) Austria was a little too close to scoring for comfort...but even if they equalised, it would not have helped them
b) well, I guess that worked, then
I take the middle road. I think the game against Austria was supposed to be understated, but it almost backfired on the team.

This game...was really quite something. Banning Löw was a joke. Austria's coach Hickersberger said so, himself. Ok, he's banned, as well. But there was no indication that they did something worthy to be banned. Never mind, Hansi Flick replaced him just fine. Turns out, they thought up the "
ouble Six" which worked like a charm. I admit, I didn't understand what this was all about...I'm not familiar with the connection between numbers and positions. I think a "Six" is a midfielder behind the center? No clue.
I couldn't believe when we were 2-0 in the lead. Such a beautiful first goal, produced by best buddys Podolski and Schweinsteiger ( they played in the youth team, they played during world cup, they play for Bayern, although "Poldi" was mostly put on the bench...those two know each other well and they show it) Then after the 2-1, slight loss of control occured.

During the second half they picked up well, again. Portugal started a wave of hefty attacks. Remember the infamous POR vs. NET, when players on both sides decimated themselves? If the result had been different and Germany accepted this "invitation", who knows, we may have seen another deathmatch of those proportions. I lose sympathy for Portugal, I did back then and I did yesterday. If you don't let them play like they are used to, they get grumpy.
As a result of this frustration, Pepe's attack caused the free kick, which led to the 3-1. Yes, Ballack pushed (Simao?). I don't know, I think the rules say the free kick has to be repeated? He should have dropped to the floor, then I guess it would not have counted. Alright, I have mixed feelings about this. But I think if you let yourself get pushed away like that, you are not aggressive enough. It's not like Ballack hit him or something. I try not to be subjective, but seriously, it looked harmless and I believe if the opponent wanted, he could have stood his ground and cause Ballack to actually commit a foul.

You have to do it like Cristiano "drama queen" Ronaldo. Did you see that one scene when he was tackled, fell down, watched the attacker, then started to hold his leg and cry like a baby? Damn, I don't like this guy. I never did. He's one of the world's most gifted players right now, but silly theatrics like this can't get him any points. And that's not because it's Germany playing...with Portugal, he is frequently putting up a show like this. I guess he can't do this in the Premiere League and he must be tough enough to compete there, which is all the more pathetic when he pretends to be super-hurt. And seconds later standing all High Noon like (I didn't think of this, the commentator did, hehe) for the free kick...

Those last 10 minutes, including additional time (did I get it right, this time?)...I really didn't need those. With a tad bad luck this could have been a draw, but Germany prevailed.
Also prevailing: "Schweini" being Portugal's worst enemy ever since the world cup match for 3rd place when he scored twice. Now he scored once and served both free kicks. Ha ha. Awesome.

Oh, by the way...my vote for Most Daring Long Distance Shot goes to...Podolski! Holy sh...did you see how close that was?? On his way to top scorer, my home club will never get him back, now...

And tonight we will learn who is the opponent in the semi final...is it Croatia, the one we lost to in the group? Or is it Turkey, the one team that impossibly turned around a result in a flash? And the one team that does have the most fans living over here? If they win, I call Code Red...it will be mayhem, I assure you.

CRO vs. TUR (1-1)
I try this again. I don't want to predict a winner. I'm afraid it will be Turkey, haha. It's better if I'm wrong. But Croatia didn't fill me with awe. They won against a bad German team. They hardly won against Austria. B team against Poland, ok, but...that was just Klasnic returning to form, I think (my home club is out to get him, I hear).
I feel this might go to penalty shootout.

CRO vs. TUR 0-0 / 1-1 / 1-3 (1-1)
How many times can they do this? 117 minutes that won't be able to make anyone a football fan, followed by 3 minutes of madness. Croatia in the lead, what could possibly happen? Well, we know the Turks and we are skeptical, even if they couldn't produce anything dangerous in 2 hours, it's the last minute in which Rüstü almost runs to the circle and kicks the ball one last time. After some tumbling it lands right in front of Semih who doesn't think and just puts it smack in the upper left of the case.
Then - in a scene that takes longer than it should - it seems like the referee actually has to explain how penalty shootout works. Turns out the Turks probably had a few of them in their lifetime, because three players all succeed. While two Croatians manage to completely miss the goal and the last (fourth) one is saved by none other than Rüstü, the one who earlier made Nikopolidis look like a goalie genius when he
a) got lured out of the goal and once outside watched for what seemed like a lifetime as the opponent tried to put the ball into an empty goal...no, you read that right, he didn't run back inside...I guess he must have thought that he has a better chance to pick up the ball if he keeps on standing 3 meters to the right of it - you could clearly see him being torn up by that decision
b) got lured out of the goal AGAIN, this time running back, but not fast enough to avoid the only goal Croatia was likely to score this evening...because everyone would!

I swear, goalies are hit and miss this EURO...hilarious!

But nobody will mind. Rüstü's save wasn't even that important. Because two Turks had to fail and the last Croatian to succeed in order for more penalties. Actually, the way the match went I was fully expecting for the penalty shootout to take all night...

NET vs. RUS 1-1 / 1-3 (3-1)
The Dutch play exactly like we did against Croatia. Why? Didn't they trust their abilities? Did they get nervous? Or is it just that they finally got an opponent that didn't let them get the upper hand? I couldn't say that the Russians switched to offense from the start. The first half hour of this game was about as boring as the game the other day. No, it has to be said that the Dutch didn't play well at all. I totally don't get why the right wing was empty. Boularouz seemed to go all the distance from the Dutch half to the Russian half of the field. Not once, but many times. I wonder what this was all about.
Then Russia picked up the pace, created actual chances. A lot of them. But only one of them turned into a goal. That is not enough. If they work on this, they will be a force to reckon with in the coming world cup. They will be favorites by then. I have to be honest, I was blinded by the Dutch's performance...I really didn't think they would present themselves in that kind of condition, no matter how strong the opponent. Then again, if you recall the pre-games, they always played reserved, waited for counter attacks and executed those in perfect, fast-and-furious fashion. That was key. The incredible speed and precision of those counter attacks. I expected an open game with many of those scenes, turning out in favor of the Dutch. But no such thing happened.

After Pavlyuchenko scored I expected them to march on. Because that was what they did in the previous games. But again, I was wrong. Hiddink probably told them to switch to defense. And that's what I believe causes most teams to lose their way and in the end lose the game, too. The only teams able to do this I can think of are Italy and - once in a lifetime, maybe - Greece. With Italy, you've seen this a million times. And you might be sick of it. I know I am. That's why I'm opposed to them. But I have to acknowledge that they are the masters at switching systems.

So, the Russians tried to hold it. They created a couple more chances, but basically, they let the Dutch play. Which they didn't do, though. Hardly dangerous, it took a free kick to equalize. Van Nistelrooy uses the far-offside trick to sneak to the header. Russians clearly need to work on that, as well. But as with Germany against Austria, you could tell this was the only way for the Netherlands to score a goal tonight.

Overtime, and once again, like Croatia the day before, a team that finished first with all  possible 9 points in the group...tries to stall for penalty shooutout. By now I can't believe I ever fell for the Dutch's ruse....oh, how I want them to get their butts kicked! Russia needs a little time to refill, you can tell. But around the second half they are storming again. Score one goal, then another, both beautiful. The Dutch do NOTHING.

Great stuff:
Kolodin's long distance cannon ball shots. That guy is talented. Reminded me of Podolski. Those were close. Van der Sar played his part in the Dutch not losing by a long shot, including these surprise shots.
Van der Sar was in great shape.
And while I think Russia should not turn defensive, they actually did a good job with that.
Ok, question:
You know, when Kolodin was shown red and it was taken back...do you think it was a foul? Because I do not. He barely touched him? And it looked to me like he was out for the ball. Am I on the wrong track?
Anyway, taking it back was totally not according to the rulebook. They messed this up, either way. But I'm glad he wasn't sent off. It would have ruined the game. And the Dutch might have won it, although I doubt one player less could have stopped the Russians.

There is no question who deserved to win this. There's only one question:
Is finishing first with 9 points and using the B team in the last game maybe not a good idea? So far all second teams in their groups won. The "top dogs" were sent packing. The teams that had to work to get this far and never benched any of their best players still seem to be in better condition than those that allowed their stars a break. How can this be? What is going on?

Will Spain prove us wrong? Or will Italy - once again - weasel their way into the next round?

ESP vs. ITA (0-1)
I'm so sorry. I wish it was different. And given all these weird matches, who knows? But I think this is a constant. Italy doing what they do, Spain once again messing up when it counts.
But how nice would be a revenge between Spain and Russia? Damn.

ESP vs. ITA 0-0 / 0-0 / 4-2 (0-1)
Yeah, that was my first thought. Games like these, I don't expect anything. And I'm always surprised when commentators and journalists are giddy about them. Nobody wants to lose and all of them are more than good enough to avoid goals. That's what you get. High class neutralisation of gameplay. World class defense, no room for play, just barely enough room for aesthetics to pop up here and there. Mere seconds. Not close to the yawner that Croatia and Turkey was (see, that's what happens if two teams are good at defense, but not too good at anything else...yes, I say this although Croatia has beaten Germany).
Spain tried. Italy did not until late in the game. I understand and respect that Italy is playing without their captain from the start, as well as Gattuso and Pirlo being benched. But come on, Italy's B team must be good enough to try a little more.
After all Spain deserved victory not only over Italy, but rather over that weird June 22nd. Look it up. It's fascinating.

GER vs. TUR (2-0)
Fighting spirit of the Turks might keep it from being a much higher defeat. Even one of my buddies from Turkey says that they don't have a realistic chance with that many key players banned, injured and sent home. With luck you can every game. Let's hope they don't have too much of that tonight.

RUS vs. ESP (1-2)
About the same here. I think there will be several important players missing for Russia. While Spain should have the whole repertoire available to them. Still, Russia is another team with fighting spirit and actual offensive talent (sorry, Turkey) and a damn good coach. This might be decided in the last minutes. Or it might go straight to extra time (now I know overtime is wrong and I WILL remember
). But I vote against that.

Man Germany were lucky last night.

I wasn't impressed by there defence all night. Turkey really got stuck into them.

Saying that they will probably win the tournament now with a distinctly average team by German standards.

Distinctly average?
Germany has not won a single game in the EUROs of 2000 and 2004. All the time I'm watching German teams play, I have never had that much confidence than with the current one. Add to this that all the so-called "top dogs" more and more lose ground - in tournaments - to the "small" nations. One of which Germany was about to become after 2004.

That said, yes, Germany was damn lucky!

GER vs TUR 3-2 (2-0)
The Turks began, not like an offensive whirlwind, but with a confidence at the ball and the will to be at 10 places at once, it seemed. Germany was visibly nervous, nothing worked, it was Croatia all over again. If you ask me - and Löw confirmed this - the new system  just didn't work against Turkey. Germany needed another striker. But midfield and defense wasn't any good, either. I knew the game was going to be tough when even Lahm slipped up several times in the very beginning. It's really true...you can tell what game you are about to see based on Lahm's performance. That is not to say, Lahm is the core of the German team, but so far every time Lahm was bad, everyone was bad. When the rest is not playing well, Lahm might still be the best. Yes, I'm sort of a Lahm fan.  :

Anyway, it never really let up. Germany didn't find a way to control this game, not even while being in the lead. It was just fighting spirit - and Lahm
- that got them in the finale. Turks probably had their best game, ever, I don't know. With the B team. But I think Terim intentionally tried to downplay his options, what's with speculating the 3rd goalie to play as a striker, even...that was theatrics and some might have believed that. No matter what, important players were missing and there's an aftertaste of a "what if?". Both teams didn't play top class (who does, anyway), but Turkey controlled the game and they had way more chances.
That's the thing about this German team, they are most efficient. Gone are those days when chances were created, but never taken. Today a lot of mistakes the Germans make, don't get noticed, because once in front of the goal the ball is in the net, most of the time. And they never give up, work hard to overcome the lack in ability or a bad day or whatever. As does Turkey. Like, 4 times, I believe.

Lehmann didn't look good at those two goals...but I don't blame him. He has done much for the team, already. And the mistakes happen in beforehand.
No question, this was a fight to last minute, either team could have won while playing pretty bad and the whole thing probably deserved extra time.

You will agree that there should have been a free kick for Germany after Lahm was stopped by Sabri's knee. I'm not sure if it was a penalty, although I'd say yes, it was, because the foul happened on the line which belongs to the penalty zone.
On the other hand, Lahm did something similar later, which hasn't been punished, either. We are even, I guess.
Turkey once again underlined their pole position in committing fouls. In the first minutes of the second half they repeatedly used brute force. No doubt intending to prevent Germany from catching up with the game. You can't really blame them, there is little they can do with that many important players not participating (not talking about how they got into that mess...). But, you see, that's what led to the 2-1.

It was a thrilling game, one worthy of this EURO. And the luckiest won.

Now...I don't get why there isn't a match for 3rd place in EUROs. Turkey won't be in any statistics. Neither will Russia. Why did they get rid of that? It's not possible to play one more game? I'd LOVE to see TUR vs RUS. I'm dying to know who would win this one. It's the two surprise teams of this EURO, taking part in some of the best games of this EURO...and they go home without any mention of them in football history.  :'(
BAH! Of all the decisions the UEFA made for EURO, this one is bothering me the most right now. And it's not even one of the - sucky - new ones...

RUS vs. ESP 0-3 (1-2)
I missed the first 30 minutes of the first half. No goals, alright.
I didn't really watch the rest, either. I don't know, it was strange. Just didn't manage to focus tonight.
But I didn't miss that Spain had their best game of the EURO. The Russians had no chance, none at all. They seemed tired, especially Arshavin. Either exhausted or no match to Spain. There was nothing. It was quite boring that way, if it wasn't for those beautiful goals. When Spain plays, it looks like the ball just runs the way it's supposed to, with almost no effort. Especially the 2-0. Simply great football. Even though I didn't quite get into the game, this was definitely a match with one team in total control and technically way above the other one. But I think Russia was burnt out, because I saw them play some great football before. Oh, and all this without Villa. Easily compensated this loss.

Now I have it, my dream finale: Germany vs. Spain
I wanted to see this for ages. I so much rooted for Spain to finally don't mess it up (even though I predicted Italy win...that was the cynic in me), take it all the way...okay, hold on, not ALL the way.

But seriously, even if we lose to them, I will be fine. Let Spain have it, then. So far they deserve it the most.
Which does not mean I don't want Germany to win the cup. In terms of connection to the fans, we are at the top. You don't want to see them cry, do you?

OK...

I used every character I was allowed to for that post...

Yes, I predict another 3-2.

By the way, 8(!) goals in the semi finals combined.

And would someone please respond to my bold/italic question in the NET vs. RUS post? Still don't think that would have been worthy of a yellow card. Or should I still say "was"...because it wasn't one...but it's not worthy, either if it was one or not...grammar question for you. It's pretty much the same in German. And I can't answer that one, either. Probably both is ok. Where was I?
