I'm more likely to wake up half an hour before the alarm clock goes off and then sleep with one eye open until it's time to get up. Being a control freak seldom includes any surprises.  :-/

I've done both of these things. I used to "lose time" all the time, especially in college. One minute I have a little time to get up, the next my roommates were walking out the door without me! However, it happened so often to the point I got paranoid. Now I'm more likely to wake up a couple minutes early, think I "lost time" and jump out of bed...but only 2 minutes has passed.

"Undoubtedly, Sputnik inspired Americans, perhaps for the last time, to the idea of being frontiersmen,"&&&&For the LAST time? How depressing...&&How can we not be inspired to be frontiersmen? Let's go explore.

Isn't it amazing how deeply one can sleep when it's time to get up, yet the previous two hours you toss and turn?

I tend to wake up earlier than I have to, then doze fitfully for 20-30 minutes until it's time to get up. And the worst part about it is -- I'm not a morning person at all. I just hate being woken up by an alarm.

Deleted UserI'm a Night-Owl too. (Aren't all the chirpy 'Sparrows' exasperating when your'e bleary-eyed and wool-brained still, trying to navigate the misty waters between la-la land and the bright, crispy world of the awakened?) I literally get up with one eye open, one eye closed, lamenting my previous night's gaming/internet surfing.    [smiley=zombie.gif]
Well, I've now worked out a little routine that will probably make most of you shudder and go yukkk.

I make a HUGE bowl of coffee the night before, and put it next to my bed. Then I set my alarm for 15mins before I have to get up.
When it goes off, I press the 'snooze' button, and drink a whole lot of coffee (yes, COLD coffee -yukk, but I'm used to it now), rinse and repeat at 5min intervals. After 15mins. of this, I'm able to open the other eye too, but I still sleepwalk for a little while from there.  [smiley=sleeping.gif] If my kids ask me something in the 10 mins after I got up, my answer usually is ; "Ask me again when I'm awake"
Too risky to give a proper answer while in that state....    [smiley=yawn.gif]

I wake with the sunlight.  So in summer I'm up with the dawn, bright eyed and bushy tailed.  In winter the 7am start is a struggle.  I can't sleep for more than 6 hours at a time so I don't hit the pillow before midnight.

Hubby meanwhile, sleeps and sleeps and sleeps and sleeps.  We have one son like me and one son like him.

In summer I can get my sleep quota, get out early to the beach for a long walk, get back and then wake the two sleepyheads up.

Deleted User6 hrs! Your'e so lucky. I usually need at least 7. But I'm an extremely light sleeper, even the sound of a pin dropping will wake me up. Sometimes I get back to sleep easily, but if it's after 3 am, I'm in for a hard time.  I reckon that's why I struggle to get up. It takes me a long time to unwind and conversely, to ?"wind up"?

Traveler,
Did you find your sleep pattern changed with babies?  Mine did.  I had premmies and the first one slept in a cot by my side of the bed.  He only had to snuffle (and premmies do that all the time) and I was awake expecting to feed him.  [smiley=yawn.gif] Oh god... I used to do crosswords at 2am to keep myself awake while feeding.  I was a zombie that first year....  [smiley=zombie.gif]

I don't think I slept longer than 2 hours at a time until the youngest started school.  Just lately though, I've woken up and it's already been sunny and I've been really impressed with myself because we sleep with the blinds and windows open so in summer the room is flooded with bright light and the dawn chorus you know, is rather noisy.

Deleted UserMy little boy was borderline prem and very thin.  I  breastfed my kids. The nurses in hospital told me he should be fed every 2 hours, which I followed maybe too faithfully, as it was then very difficult to get him to sleep through later on.
My daughter was born a big fat piggy (Miss Piggy) (sounds horrible, but true). I was quite shocked when I saw her the first time, she was so different and so much bigger than my little boy.  So I didn't feed her so often, and knew better from experience about night time routine. That first year of motherhood, though, was a nightmare with me constantly dozing off. We have dark blue bedroom curtains and I used them to steal a bit of extra night time.  Very, very bad for routine, we still don't have a proper one, especially as the boy is a NightOwl, and the girl is a Lark.
But I've always been a night owl, and I suppose always will be.

My husband is very lucky, he's managed to train himself to sleep when nescessary. Some mornings, for work, he has to get up @ 4.20am. In summer the sun comes up just before 5.45, and in winter at 7ish.  So winter or Summer, the poor guy often has to get up when it's still pitch dark outside. The up side is that some days he only starts work @11.45, or even later! Those times he works til late - 9.30pm or later, and for further destinations he will get to overnight 2-3 nights, sometimes only 1 night. (My hubby flies a medium sized jet, (as compared to a Jumbo) that is limited to a range of +-3000km's. So he does short to medium distance flights.)
Another bonus of these irregular hours,  is that he gets to miss peak time traffic !

Ah, don't ask...that has happened to me so many times...I once managed to not wake up with two alarm clocks set at two different times...
Instances of losing time are apparent whenever I go to bed late, intend to set something on the shelf before I do, lie back just a second...and it's not done when I wake up the next morning. Just that little moment, I couldn't possibly fall asleep that fast!
Think again.

Another thing that's happening way too often for comfort:
I know that I set the alarm clock, but I could swear that it didn't go off. I got one of those which do not stop to ring until you turn them off or they run out of batteries.
Only explanation, I turned it off and didn't notice. Sleepwalking. I tried to test this by setting at some place I have to get up to turn it off. I know I sleepwalked when it happened again.

Well, either that or the alarm clock DOES turn off. I never managed to sit through that happening when I'm awake. If it does, it takes more than 15 minutes for sure...

Although it would be cool if you had taken by aliens.

Yes.  I rather think I'd like to be awake for an encounter with Aliens.  There are quite a few questions I'd want answered.

You could always try Mr. Bean's system for waking up...........

I  think "losing time" is a woman thing.  They say it when they are late to an appointment:  "Sorry, but I lost time, dear".   It's as if the Earth opened up and swallowed thirty minutes from all of the clocks and that celestial phenomenon is the reason that you have been kept waiting for thirty minutes from the time at which she said she would meet you.

It is not that men are not more punctual than women, they are just more direct about their tardiness.  We simply say:  "Sorry, I'm late".

There must be something about that simple phrase that makes women reluctant to utter it. :

I've never heard this phrase before.  "I've lost time".  So it's an American Goddess statement is it?   And there appears to be no adequate male comeback ...?   Sounding good to me.....

I would like to refute the notion that women are always late but all I can say Anthony is you're getting off lightly if you only have to wait 30 minutes....
