I've come to realize now that the current popular type of Hollywood movies these days are based on fantasy novels.  Ever since Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings have been made into movies other movie studios are jumping to make their own movie based on fantasy stories.  Eragon and The Chronicles of Nardia are a few examples (the Nardia books make up five or six books so no doubt more sequels are on the way.)  The latest is The Golden Compass.  I'm sure more are on the way.

I personally love fantasy.  It's a very old genre.  All our legends and ancient myths not to mention [spoiler midtext]religions are based on fantasy stories.   'Realism' tends to focus on misery and murder too much.

.

I really enjoy the genre too. But the stories would be worthless and empty if they didn't center on the very same trials and tribulations we face in real life - the struggle to survive, grappling with moral dilemmas, finding one's true path in life, overcoming our fears and hopefully finding love along the way.

Fantasy stories have all that PLUS magical wizards, scary dragons and cool swords.

Cheers,  Terry

I tend to prefer sci-fi movies but then again I've read that fantasy has been considered a side part of sci-fi.  Comic books could easily be considered fantasy and sci-fi.  After recently watching Batman Begins I looked up Batman on Wikipedia to learn that there are so many different versions of the Batman story in the comics.  Being a collector would be dounting task to collect every issue.
Fantasy based comics is probably a genre that is seperate from superhero ones.  There was at one time I had an interest in a fantasy comicbook series called Elfquest.  It told of a story that really made me not wanting to put down the graphic novel it was in.  But eventually over the years my interest waned and I got rid of the books.  Although I still find it interesting today just not as much as to read it.  Its been considered an important part of American literature by some government Library group.  One thing that never happened was that it never became an animated series.  Something I wouldn't mind seeing today.

Although 'fantasy' is a recognised genre in the literary world that can be defined as featuring magic spells and imaginery creatures such as demons and elves etc, I personally regard all imaginery non-real aspects of fiction as fantasy - including sci-fi.   How else can we describe tele-transportation and food replicators, alien species and mind control abilities?   That line is so blurred I won't draw it.

Reminds me of Arthur Clarke's famous maxim. "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

Television has always struck me as being magic.

Sci-fi is really a modern interpretation of the fantasy genre. So it's influenced a lot more than just the recent movies - it's been ultimately responsible for every sci-fi film you've seen as well.

Me, Snide?   A Goddess?  I don't think so.  [haughty look]  I was being subtle and discreet....

Actually I was showing sensitivity towards the forum rules about not discussing religion and politics in the Off Topic forum.

But now that I'm wearing my Goddess slippers I may as well say that I truly believe that humanity's imagination has invented all sorts of religions right from the very first gods in the wind, rain and sun category up to the latest Scientology nonsense.     Fantasy is in fact the way we interpret our physical world.  That raw boned new-comer Science, well, he's got a lot to say and it's all very interesting but we can hardly build a temple to it and sacrifice virgins or have feast days around something like the discovery of the atom, now can we?

Actually Caroline, mankind has built numerous "temples" dedicated to science and technology.

We call them museums, halls, colleges, laboratories, research facilities, R&
departments, and government agencies.

Although (most) people don't sacrifice virgins in their honor, nowadays, hundreds of millions of people the world over study, communicate, work, play, engage in commerce and yes, even spread "the good word" via scientific and technological marvels known as PCs and the Internet. Many of them also listen to gospel music on portable, high-tech devices and most modern churches rely heavily on a complete range of electronic media. Televangalism is a reality and The Vatican has an official web site.

In short, religion and science have already merged and for the most part, they work seamlessly together. Which is why I have to laugh whenever a religious fanatic gets on the web or on TV to rant and rave about the evils of science.

Cheers,  Terry
