Hi Friedmonkey,

I also responded to your similar thread on GameBoomers, but I thought of a few things to add that might be of interest to you:

I decided to go with a dual boot for my Hypersonic; Win98SE and XP home edition.  There actually are quite a few games that will not run properly on XP because of it's lack of true DOS.  I decided having Win98 in a separate partition would be the most painless way to adjust to using XP.  It was an extra $200 for them to set this up for me, and that included the Win98SE license.  I'm not sure if Alienware offers this service, but I bet they would do so if requested.

You may want to hold off buying a system for another month or so, because I heard they are coming out with new motherboards that have an even higher front side bus speed, along with new memory that runs at this same speed.  I know that if you keep waiting for the next great thing to come out you'll never get a new system, but this might be worth the wait.  Of course, I didn't listen to my own advice and bought anyways because I got tired of waiting.

I think regardless of whether you buy Alienware or Hypersonic or Voodoo, you'll love your new system.

Hi Lakerz,
Again, thanks for the info.  I checked into a dual boot at both Alienware and Hypersonic and they no longer do it.  They only offer and support XP.  So, I guess if I wanted a dual boot I would have to do it myself.  This would create two problems.  One, I have no idea how to do it and two, I think this would probably void the warranty.
I also checked some other companies and same thing.  I guess XP is taking over the world!

You're welcome Friedmonkey!
Let us know what you decided on, okay!  That way, we can criticize every piece of hardware you decided on part by part! (just kidding of course)

[not arguing]are you serious? you mean installing whatever o/s you want voids the warranty?
[/not arguing]

as for dual boot it's not very hard as long as you know how to install windows

Yes Aya, as far as I can tell, the only operating system that is supported nowadays is XP.  So, even if you can get a computer company to do a dual boot (which is not easy anymore) the only OS that they will provide support for is XP.
If someone buys an Alienware system, for example, and creates their own dual boot for it by adding, say 98SE, I believe that would void the warranty.  I am not 100% sure on this yet but, so far that's how it looks.

Thank you for not arguing with me (just kidding)

well, without arguing at all, that's just another reason for me not to support pre-made comps... it's CRAZY not to be able to do whatever the hell you want with your pc!
if i want to remove winxp and install 98, 95, 3.1, dos, linux, amiga workbench, dual boot, quadrable boots etc etc, then it's MY pc and it's MY decision... anyway, whatever :

??? Not sure but, I don't think so.  I think that the OS warranty would be void as it has been changed.  Just like if you buy a new car and put a new bigger engine in.  They are not going to honor you warranty if you have any engine trouble.

OS warranty? What the heck is that?
Like you're going to get your money back if Windows doesn't work right

No, there is no warranty whatsoever on the software. Read the license agreement. If it don't work, tough luck. That's how the software world works.

Incorrect...Any computer company will give support for software as well as hardware for the warranty period.  You mean to tell me that if I buy a system today with a 1 year warranty, and I have a Windows problem tomorrow, and I call the company that I bought it from, they will tell me sorry we can't help you because your problem is with software and not hardware?!  I would be completely out of luck in getting support for my OS problem even though I have a 1 year warranty???  That would be completely illegal for Christ's sake!

Support does not mean they'll actually fix anything.

Well, if the problem is, say, that someone broke into your system because of a security hole that MS was too lazy to fix, what do you think they will do for you?

I strongly suggest that you read the full EULA. You might discover that you were severely shortchanged. No waranty is a very typical clause in all software license agreements. In fact I can't think of any software that is warranted. And no, it is not illegal, because you agreed to it.

Just read over Alienwares warranty.  It says that an "unauthorized modification"  is one of the things that would void the warranty.  I consider creating a dual boot an "unauthorized modification".  'Nuff said...sorry not in an arguing mood tonight.  You'll have to find someone else. :-X

so a user doing what he/she wants with his software is now unauthorized... i wonder when the time will come where pre-made comps will come with installed games, and the user installing new ones will be considered unauthorized... oh well :
