I would choose Return to Mysterious Island because there were different ways to solve each problem. Otherwise Syberia if only for the wonderful artwork or maybe Barrow Hill because I live near to where it was made.

My work here is done. I was paging through some-ones journal at school and I had the Nemesis music on and for a moment I just felt like I was back in the game. Bliss

I'm afraid I will join the Riven crowd {how did you guess?}. I would say a big yes to all the other comments about Riven, but for me the biggest reason why this game still inspires fond memories can be summed up in one word: immersion.

It was clear that the makers of the game had done everything they could (with the technology of the time) to make you feel as if you were in the game world:

  • The fact that you don't play as another character - you are the nameless "friend" and so can be yourself.
  • The FMV of real people and the beautiful photorealistic scenery, all seen from a consistent viewpoint. No jumping perspectives in cut scenes (listen hard Omega Stone).
  • The decision not to have interactive dialogue - because choosing responses from a list is not how you converse in real life. {OK making you mute was a bit of a compromise but at least it avoided conversation trees}

For me Riven is not a game I have played it is a place I have visited and had a fascinating adventure there.

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.
