Nah... this book was written in early 1970s and I believe the author is still alive.

Just a guess, but I was sceptical, because I can't think of that quote.

No, not a woman. Since this seems to be indeed tough, I'll drop another hint - his first name is Tom.

The author has to be Tom Holt, then.  He is british and lived (still lives?) in South Africa...Can't remember the book's name (I probably haven't read it)  Can I ask my brother? Is that allowed?

Nope, not Tom Holt. The author definitely does not live in South Africa anymore. I believe he was in fact deported and the book the quote is from is part of his "revenge" (very not nice to the South African whites, especially those of British origin).

Forgot to add - sure, ask your brother if you think it'll help

Actually I think the real name of the town is Pietermaritzburg but the name is slightly different in the book (shorter).

Well alright then I guess I'm packing off to the library tomorrow... This one's got me thrown for a stump...

That's alright though - South Africa has a rather rich history...

What?

So everyone's given up I take it? I'll post the correct answers later tonight or tomorrow... on the off chance that anyone's actually interested.

If noone disagrees, I guess a hint (a little one) would be very useful now... ???

If they disagree, tough luck I say

Okay, here's a hint. One of the author's better known books is Wilt, with follow-ups The Wilt Alternative and Wilt on High. This should make it exceptionally easy to find out who the author was and perhaps even what the book and city were called.

Excellent, Miss Gedde
It is Tom Sharpe indeed. The other questions are which book the excerpt is from (it's the opening paragraph BTW) and what is the name of the city in the book (sounds a little like Pietermaritzburg but not quite).

Hey, cool, how the heck did you find out?

You know, it sort of is - that is to say, the city in the book is modeled after Pietermaritzburg. It just has a shorter name in the book.

Okay, so the answers are:

1. Piemburg
2. Indecent Exposure by Tom Sharpe

and the previous one was

1. OS/2
2. Bill Gates in Inside OS/2 by Gordon Letwin

I'll try to come up with more questions soon.

Here's another one - this time author/book only:

"A new animal was abroad on the planet, spreading slowly out from the African heartland. It was still so rare that a hasty census might have overlooked it, among the teeming billions of creatures roving over land and sea. There was no evidence, as yet, that it would prosper or even survive; on this world where so many mightier beasts had passed away, its fate still wavered in the balance."

A tiny little hint - this book also exists in the form of a rather well known movie.

2001 by Arthur Clarke, I think.

And one more, this time again with an unknown place too!

"It was the year when they finally immanentized the Eschaton. On April 1, the world's great powers came closer to a nuclear war than ever before, all because of an obscure island named X. By the time international affairs returned to their normal cold-war level, some wits were calling it the most tasteless April Fool's joke in history. I happen to know all the details about what happened, but I have no idea how to recount them in a manner that will make sense to most readers."
