I started Barrow Hill around 4pm today and finished around 10:30... good game.. lot of good ideas, creepy atmosphere.. and a seemingly more interactive story than a game like Myst...

I liked some of the puzzles... I felt the game had a great pace... I liked that things changed as you solved more mysteries...

Things I didn't like: minor minor spoilers:

Not enough real puzzles
I would never have found the crank had I not looked at a walkthrough.. because of the cumbersome static screens, I would never have found that you could actually move behind the area needed to find it... Meanwhile it wasn't even necessary an item!

Here was the 2 real negatives for me: minor spoiler warning again-
First of all, I searched high and low for where she could have hidden the 3rd piece.. meanwhile it was impossible to find.. you just needed to give all the offerings.. talk abotu a waste of searching time...
Why did I focus on that instead of finishing the offerings?  My one last offering was the stupid mushroom puzzle... the clue led you to look for oak mushrooms, of which there were 3, and when you try to add something else to the cup it removed the picture of the mushroom you previously place, making it look like it was a substitution!  In fact, it was merely adding the next item to the cup.... That was an obnoxious trick... would it have been that hard to show all three intended items simultaneously in the cup!?!?

Otherwise, good first game... anyone else have problems where I did?

Yep, the ingredients in the cup thing here too.  Same routine too, I didn't realize they were all adding up, I thought they were being replaced.

Shadow.....It's a big deception to me....indeed.

Seems adventure development are moving to easier and faster stories....gennerally speaking.

Burn 20, 30 bucks between the launch and dinner....isn't a good cost/benefit relation, IMO.
To much money for very few entertainment.

Well, look at it this way... I spend $20-25 for Barrow Hill, but I just bought Myst 4 on ebay for $10 including shipping and bought Myst 5 in CC 2 days ago for $16.  I recently bought Dark fall 1 and 2 for around 12 bucks each, longest journey for 10, Still life for 15 on ebay, broken sword 1 and 2 dvd on ebay for 15, discworld noir for 20 on ebay, broken sword 3 for 13 at the adventure store, scratches for 20... Escape from monkey island was round 10 on ebay(though I severely dread the control scheme of grim fandango again).

Deals are to be had if you wait a bit after the games come out.. Plus, ebay is your friend...

As long as the game is fun, it's worth it to me... compared to paying 10 bucks for what is usually a crappy movie in the movie theaters.. and that's 10 bucks per person, which including the wife, is $20+gas/tax...

Some of the newer independent games like Dark Fall and Barrow Hill are short.. but their content is still a ton of fun(aside from a few quibbles I had with both)...

3rd person games tend to be longer(longest journey), and the first person ones are usually more intense and quicker... at least the newer budget ones... but they still have a place.

I look at it a different way. It cost us $40.00 to get it here.
Okay my husband played it and then I played it. So now the cost has dropped to $20.00 each. We own the game and play almost every game 3 or 4 times. So everytime you play the game and enjoy it just a little it knocks the price down even more.  I figure the game well have paid for itself for the many times we play it. And even if you only play it one time and enjoyed the game it must have been worth it.  We could have spent the money and walk away with a sick feeling and had nothing to say about it  or to show you even enjoyed it a few mins...

While we're on the subject of Barrow Hill.

Did anyone notice the face of a man in the church' ruins on the wall when you enter them and turn to the right? Was there a meaning behind that or was it just there to freak you out? (because it worked on me.)

Adventure games are famous due their constitution - A story driven based game....with pre-determinated paths, single solutions and extremely few replaybility in comparison with racing, sports, shooting and fighting ones. By my side - I prefer harder and longer adventures/stories. More for my money....but I admit and respect those gamers who loves nanometrical adventures...I know that modern life is fast.....extremelly fast.

I think you were just supposed to be seeing your own reflection.

I don't often really disagree with comments on this site, but Banjo Cousin isn't quite correct.  I won't note the the spots for spoiler reasons, but there were two different times in this game where the author did such a good job of saying "Boo" to me that I jumped right out of my chair!

[size=14]I thoroughly enjoyed Barrow Hill and I don't usually enjoy 1st person games. I liked the story.  I didn't find it all that creepy although I certainly wouldn't wander around in a place like that, all alone, in real life.
I did jump a couple of times when Spoiler Alertthe bird flew out from behind a garbage bin ... twice.  Well worth the 30 bucks or whatever it was. I never re-play games but I would recommend this one to anybody who hasn't played it.

I really liked this game, finished it the other day, cant say how long it took because I can never just sit down and play when I want so an hour here and there. But Ive had it for a couple of weeks so it isnt to long of a game but one I thoroughly enjoyed.

This game didn't throw anything at you that would keep you racking your brain for hours or cause you to go look for a walkthrough and that was really good.   Because of this some people are saying it was short but I don't like being stumped for hours or days at a time so I can't complain about the length.
I have talked to many good action gamers and  being stumped and having no idea how to advance the story is the main reason they don't play many adventure games.  Putting action in them is not what it takes to get the action gamers playing them.
I am an engineer and I do everything by putting all my clues together and geting them to all point in the same direction. If a game doesn't have enough clues to do that it makes it hard to solve the puzzles. This game had just the right amount for me.
