On the whole - a pretty ordinary line-up. Lots for Brokeback as expected (leading the pack with 8 noms), thankfully some big ones for Munich as well including Film and Director (5).

The acting nominations are in many ways entirely predictable - expect Keira Knightley somehow managed to sneak in with a Best Actress nod (are they insane????!?!). Interesting Amy Adams - completely unheard of making the list - more of that in future would be great - actual talent and no politics getting recognised. Of course, winning is a different matter.
Actually I've just had a thought - winning Best Actress is usually the kiss of death on a young career - let's all hope Keira's got what it takes!

George Clooney must be rubbing his hands with glee having been nominated for three different things - his acting, his directing and his writing. Not bad.

John Williams also has to compete against himself (again) in the Score catagory.

A slow year for the animated film - three nominations, almost a dead cert for Wallace and Gromit I should think, but good for Tim Burton picking that up.

I hope Batman wins cinematography just to hear the winner's name called out - the marvellous Wally Pfister.

In fact most of the blockbusters have got one or two nods apiece - King Kong, Star Wars, War of the Worlds, Narnia, Harry Potter, even Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Otherwise all of them have had a pretty well deserved snubbing outside the technical catagories.

Results: March 5th!

I'm a bit miffed that History of Violence wasn't given more nods, and I'm really surprised that March of the Penquins was snubbed (though I seem to remember it was on a technicality). Otherwise, it's nice to see some new faces and even unfamiliar ones nominated. They really should get rid of the best song category, though. Let the Grammys do that.

It's alright Colpet - "March of the Penguins" got a well deserved Best Documentary nomination - which I think was its only eligible catagory.

I agree about the song catagory though, it is a bit strange isn't it?

Damn Dom, you beat me with posting the Oscar noms!

On the whole, no really big surprises here (woohoo, go Brokeback Mountain!). Though I must say that the Oscars so far are the only award ceremony to give Munich that much credit (eg it didn't even get a best drama nod at the Globes). Whether it's justified or not, I can't tell yet, haven't seen it yet myself.

Also, too bad that The Constant Gardener seems to have been the major victim of the Academy's like of Munich, as it was denied both best pic and best director's nominations.  :-/ Too bad, one of the best films of last year. Rachel Weisz will probably still take home the Best Supporting Actress statue.

Also, where is Sin City in the technical categories? If there's one film that outclassed most blockbusters style-wise, it's this one. It should at least have bagged a nom for art direction.

And for me the song category can stay, as long as it features songs that were actually used in the film and contribute something to it. eg, if that category would not excist, someone like Aimee Mann would not have gotten recognition for her work on Magnolia, while her work definitely contributed to the movie's quality. Still don't understand why she didn't win though. Nevertheless, some songs play vital roles in some movies and in that respect fulfill the same role as the soundtrack.

Hm, I just noticed Giamatti's nomination for Cinderella Man. I'm sure he's fine in that, but it does seem to reek of the Academy's 'we messed up last year by not nominating him (for Sideways), let's make it up this year' attitude.

I too am dismayed by the absence of A History of Violence, as well as Grizzly Man in the documentary section.  While I agree that it's a pretty predictable list, there isn't anything on there that I think is painfully undeserving, which usually isn't the case.  Philip Seymour Hoffman better win for Best Actor.

What an awful year for songs in movies.  Apparently the academy agreed, because the nominee list was paired down to three instead of the usual five.

Yeah, I wondered about that as well. Thought this category used to have nominations as well. Maybe there was idd a lack of good choices. That doesn't explain though why Brokeback Mountain's title song was not nominated. I thought A Love That Will Never Grow Old by Emmylou Harris would have been a garantee winner for the best song oscar.

Well another year and the streak is safe.  The streak being the lack of a film winning all four acting awards.  It has never happened and it will not happen this year because no film was nominated in all four acting categories.

Two films came very close.  They were nominated in all four categories and won three of the four nominations.  Anyone know the two films?

I can name quite a few films that won best actor and actress for the same film - One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest, Network, Silence of the Lambs, As Good as it Gets.... but as for supporting actor or actress in addition... that's trickier. Got to be Network at a guess for one - but couldn't tell you who won the supporting statue.

That is the correct answer only according to The History of the Oscars by James Frey.

DomBrewer is correct that one of the films is Network. Peter Finch and Faye Dunaway won leading awards. An actress named Beatrice Straight won a supporting award (I never understood this one; she is only in one or two scenes; she played William Holden's jilted wife). Ned Beatty was nominated but did not win the supporting actor award.

Guessing the other film may depend on the kindness of strangers. :

By that it can only be "Streetcar named Desire" - but I didn't remember that at all. Interesting that Brando - the best performance of the four was the one that didn't win!

By popular opinion the "Big 5" oscars are Actor, Actress, Director, Film and Screenplay - and they have only gone three times to the same film "It Happened One Night" back in 1934, "One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest" and "Silence of the Lambs".

It's tough to be excited about the Oscars now that a far more significant event has been announced in the movie industry.  The March 2006 issue of Vanity Fair will feature a still nude photo of both Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley.  I swear, I haven't been this juiced up since they ran that lite beer commercial where the two women wrestle in their bikinis and high heels and fall into that pool.

I really don't think Crash deserved that.  I really think Best Picture should have gone to Brokeback, Capote, or Good Night and Good Luck.

Well Well Well.

Most of them went with the predictions making it a fairly predictable evening it kept the big surprise to the end.

Just as you thought Jack Nicholson was going to say "Brokeback Mountain" for the big prize Best picture he said "Crash" instead.

I'm shocked.

I thought it was the weakest of the 5 nominations.

Glad to see Phillip Seymore Hoffman win Best Actor, George Clooney winning Best Support was slightly surprising but as he was nominated for a few other ones he had no chance of getting it felt more like a "we better give him something" award. Even he said as his first comment "Ah well so i'm not winning best director then" which was funny.

Reece won Best Actress and as usual for actresses lost it in the speech. Nice to see Rachale Weiss win Best support though.

King Kong seemed to win all the sound awards and Memoirs of a Geisha all the art type ones (Well it did look fantasic).

So no clean sweep for Brokeback with Best Director for Ang Lee it's best award.

Fav award of the night went to Wallace and Gromit for Best Animated Feature. "Cracking Award Gromit"
Dear Diary, My teenage angst bullsh*t now has a bodycount.

Crash was made and released at least forty years too late.

If Crash had been released during the civil war race riots of 1964, it would have been "something".

But instead, it was an old, tired, "stereotypica-of-stereotypes" movie and characters and the most "in-your-face-but-not-in-a-good-or-original-way" film of the year.

I hated it, and thought it was a lousy film. Just plain corny.

Please proofread your posts carefully to see if you any words out.

Hahaa...I liked Crash, but haven't seen any of the other movies. I was very surprised that Brokeback Mountain didn't win best picture. Although I loved Crash, I'm not really sure that it deserved the win for all the reasons brought up already. It was not that original and not subtle enough, although none of that really bothered me. It was well played, though. But so are the other movies, most likely.

I'm not sure about Brokeback...I'm not into that kind of movie (romance, I mean). Capote is none of my real interest, either. I should probably watch Munich, but I don't enjoy that type of movie all that much.
I'm definitely going to see Good Morning and Good Luck, though.
