I know as soon as the PS3 comes out, it will go down in price. But do I really want to wait that long?
Thoughts or ideas ...? what's "that type of gamer" supposed to mean? [smiley=raise_eyebrow.gif] what's wrong with us playing on pc and owning two consoles?!
the ps2 is a great console to own if you are into (or want to get into) survival horror... some of the best survival horror games come only on ps2, especially fatal frame 2 (any survival horror fan MUST play this game)... now x-files: resist or serve is a survival horror game, as you realise, but for an x-files fan it could be a great game because everyone appears! well, almost everyone, but you'll see all the main characters and then some, and the voiceovers are done by the actors themselves... i don't know if two games are enough reason to buy a console though... i guess it depends on the price... if those are the only games you want, i say buy the games whenever you can find a good deal, and wait until the price drops, or until you can find a used ps2 for a good price

And there are supposedly several different releases of DDR, so that in itself is a few games. And X-Files ... well, I don't like survival horror, but I'm all about more XF, especially if the actors themselves did the voices. And of course I probably wouldn't stop there - maybe hop into Blockbuster or something and rent some other games I've heard so much about. I picked a PS2 because it seems more games (like X-Files) are available for it.
In other news, Oprah's show is a bad influence on my mom. - "They just had the President's doctor on today ... blahblahblah ... you need to exercise more ... blahblahblah." - She can use the elliptical machine my parents just bought yesterday, and I'll go buy myself a PS2, DDR, and a fancy dance pad. Status : Offline | Well, I had a nice post typed up, but then the system erased it, so I'm just copy-pasting what I put on another forum ... ----------------------------------
My parents' talk of exercising and such put me over the edge, so the other night I went out and bought one, along with the DDR Extreme game & dance pad combo. And a pack of the red/blue 8MB memory cards, as I was reading you need them to save your games. No X-Files, but I did see that The Sims: Bustin' Out was available, so I bought that, too. No extra or fancy controllers, as I'm guessing the one that came in the box will be enough. I get everything home, and my parents are like, "Oh yeah, we were thinking of getting one of those to try out that dancing thing!" Figures.
I hopped into another store today to see if the X-Files game was there, but no luck. Maybe it's no longer on the shelf? Hmm, off to eBay I go. Then I can get another game from a couple years back. Although I did see DDRMax and DDRMax2 on the shelf today, so I bought those, too!  I like variety.) Any other DDR games I'm missing?
One thing I don't understand has to do with quitting a game: Can I just take the game out of the PS2 when I quit and am back to the game's main menu, or can it be done anytime?  The Sims has an actual Quit function, but I don't see any for DDR.) I don't want anything ruined due to my ignorance, but at the same time, I'm too excited to read any of the documentation. :
I'm pretty sure the money from my last paycheck has gone into this little spending spree of mine (I bought some web design software a couple weeks ago), but it's all fun, so it's good.
I feel overstimulated.

i didn't understand your question about quitting though... since there are no windows etc, when you want to quit, you just turn the ps2 off (make sure to have saved!)... you can take the cd/dvd out anytime before turning it off, if you don't want to leave it inside... if you want to quit and play another game, just take the cd/dvd you are playing out, put the other game you want to play in and reset

And another question ... how much can these memory cards hold? Should I have one per game (boy, that would be a lot in the long run!) or can I use one for 3-4 games?
I'm loving EBgames.com (and GameStop.com has this, too) for their store locator function that tells you where to find a particular game, as it looks like The X-Files is available at the nearest one!

Kinda frustrating too, as there are lots of sessions when you will encounter unlimited zombies to fight, and not realize it untill you're completely out of bullets, and they just keep coming and coming.....
However, PS2, has lots of other great titles, if you're into action games, I'd suggest the great Prince of Persia, one of the best IMO.

@susan: there is no standard on how many games a memory card can hold... each game's save files take up a different amount of the card's memory... you can have several games on one card

I don't think survival horror is my genre ~ I don't like all those monsters coming out of nowhere. I felt bad everytime one of them started beating up Scully! : I did notice at least half a dozen references to the show (mostly in street names) which I thought was cool. At least it has that going for it. I'm going to focus on it not as a survival horror or action/adventure, but more of an X-Files episode(s), like the other game. Good or bad, let's at least see how it compares to the TV series itself!

Haven't finished the game yet, but I found 2 other unlimited zombie-points: the firetruck part and the cave. As I said before, the player will only notice the zombies are unlimited AFTER wasting a good amount of precious ammo...

@susan: check www.gamefaqs.com to see if there are any ways to get god mode... usually a gameshark is needed for that, but there are a few exceptions

Now it's almost like an adventure game, albeit a violent & gory one. :

If you don't mind platform fighters, my husband would recommend his favorite PS2 series ~ the Ratchet & Clank games.
Occasionally you can find an adventure game to play on the PS2 though, so far, most seem better on the computer.

There's ICO, which is an amazing game. Very much an adventure game, though an action based one. Some ingenious action based puzzles and very atmospheric, though the story is almost nonexistent and what's there is hard to decipher.
The Silent Hill games of course, which are just plain a better experience on the console than on PC. Lots of action, but definate adventure elements. Fun games, very spooky.
That's actually all I can think of at the moment, besides games that are also available for PC.
Not sure what other types of games you like but if, for example, you like RPGs then PS2 is definately the way to go.

Ah well. The Silent Hill games are of much higher quality than X-Files. Also, in the games you carry around a transistor radio that emits static whenever a monster is nearby (weird I know, but whatever) so most of the time you know something scary is coming half a minute or so before encountering it, and most enemies cas simply be avoided rather than having to fight them.
There are a few boss-type battles though, a few fights that can't be avoided, and a few places where something does indeed jump out at you with no warning.
The opening sequence of the original PSX Silent Hill, with the camera lurching around drunkenly as youir character is eaten by demon babies, remains the single freakiest gaming experiene I've ever had.

btw, i disagree that they are a better experience on a console... the pc offers WAY better visuals, thus making the experience better (plus, sh2 and 3 offer free saving everywhere!)... putting the pc and ps2 versions of sh4 next to each other (which i did) makes the ps2 version look like a game from the early 90s!

I guess it depends on how you prefer playing your games. I get restless sitting at my computer to play any game that requires any great time commitment, while sitting on the couch with a controller in my hand I'm much more relaxed and into it. Makes me sorry there aren't more adventure games for the consoles. For some weird reason, possibly a brain tumor, I no longer possess the ability to sit still for a game unless I'm playing it on a console.
Once upon a time I totally dismissed the FPS genre as being worthless on consoles, then I got my hands on an Xbox (got a great deal on a used one in perfect condition) I would now say I find playing FPSs on Xbox preferable to the PC. I prefer the Xbox Doom 3 (getting it looking as good on my PC while maintaining a reasonable frame rate would be impossible without upgrading), Halo is a much better game than I ever would have thought, and I can't wait until Half-Life 2 hite the Box in October.
