Sir Dave,
As I said, I had to stretch my list to reach 50 games played.  However, I've always loved the Peanuts gang and found the game easy but fun.  As soon as I play a few more adult adventures, the kids games will slide off the bottom.

I don't have any children, but my sister who lives with me is mentally retarded and loves the children's adventures because they're the only kind she can handle by herself.  I sometimes play them first so I can help her out with clues if she needs them, but she has gotten so good that she solved Muppet Treasure Island and Finding Nemo on her own.

(You know that I was only kidding with you a bit.
)
But seriously, along those lines, I've been checking out AGs for kids in the 9-12 age group such as the Enid Blyton Famous 5 & the Uncle Albert series. The former have been reviewed fairly well, the latter only so-so.

The future ain't what it used to be!

ok, here it is... if i tried to make this list again in 2 hours, it would not be exactly the same! but it's very close to being the absolute top 50 of the adventure games i've played and finished (no action/adventures included - i might make a top 10 of those later)... of course this list can change anytime i play a new game, and there are several games announced that look like top 50 material - eg scratches, still life, nibiru, clever & smart!

the manhunters should be higher on the list (in the top 40, or even 30) but they are very peculiar, and are not really adventures, but they're not action/adventures either - they're smth in between! so they're at #50 as honorable mentions!

old games that i haven't played yet and seem to be potential top 50 material: scapeghost (:-[), wonderland (:-[ :-[), several infocom games (only played a couple :-[), the spellcastings, eric the unready, mission critical, discworld 2, zork nemesis, blade runner, maupiti island, quest for glory 3-5, under a killing moon, overseer

and no, i didn't forget the gabriel knights!

Oh my!!   I'm so impressed with everyone's listing of games... top 50 is HARD...

I think I've possibly played a total of about 50 games in my life, so I am not going ot have a top 50 list.  I'll think about a top 10 though... this will take some thought...

No, in that particular subject I don't really need to decide, because I can't come up with anything!
I'm living in the past, musically and at the moment I'm not all that interested in new music at all.
It comes in phases for me and as I said, it's usually old stuff, then.
I know, it's shocking.

I try the top 50 later on. Your efforts are somewhat motivating to bear with the painful process of decision.

I'm not going to try for 50 or for ranking them in a "favorites" order. These are some of my favorites in alphabetical order. These are all games I have a special fondness for, for one reason or another (which occasionally has nothing to do with good gameplay or reasonable puzzles (as with Armed and Delirious)). Keep in mind I have a bad memory and have probably forgotten quite a few games that could be on this list.

Alien Incident - short, but unexpectedly fun

Amerzone - great atmosphere, bittersweet story similar in feel to
Syberia

Armed and Delirious (aka Granny or Dementia) - way too offbeat and difficult for me to play without a walkthrough, but has some of     the most original and wacky gameworlds I've ever seen. Too bad
it's so stubborn about playing on Win 98.

Atlantis II
aka Beyond Atlantis) - loved the gameworlds, especially the little touches like the miniature dragon swimming around the tank

Day of the Tentacle - one of the funniest games I've ever played

The Dig - great music score, fun puzzles. It would be interesting to play with updated graphics.

Discworld games - I like the books too

The Egyptian Prophecy - short, but fun

Faust - not the best puzzles, but very intriguing characters

Gabriel Knight games

Grim Fandango - the voice acting and the humor made the game

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis - the first Indy game I played, and still the best

Jack Orlando (DOS version) - liked the look of the graphics, even though the gameplay went downhill toward the end. I understand the revamped Windows version has a dead end that was not in the DOS version, which would have probably kicked it off my list if that had been the version I'd played

Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time

The Longest Journey - The first 3rd person adventure game for Windows that I played. (Yes I know Nightlong was published earlier, but I played TLJ first.)

Loom - charming and unusual game

Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes 1&2 - better than the new Sherlock games, though sometimes fussy about who you had to talk to to trigger events.

Monkey Island 1 - the first Monkey Island game was the best IMO

Monkey Island 3 - except for the abrupt ending - you blink and it's over

Morpheus - intriguing characters and gameworld

Myst - my first adventure game, as well as my first computer game (except for solitaire and Tetris)

Myst III: Exile - very pretty, though short - played it 3 times in a row when I first got it.

The Neverhood

Nightlong

Pilgrim - not for everyone, but I liked it. Not many adventure games are set in medieval France.

Obsidian - like being inside a Magritte painting - with puzzles

Return to Mysterious Island - new and fun ways to combine inventory

RHEM - challenging and logical, even if not much to look at

Ripper - good  horror game with filmed actors

Riven

Runaway - though I thought Brian should have gone with Sushi instead of ...

Sanitarium - didn't like the main character's voice, but liked almost everything else

Schizm 2 (aka Mysterious Journey 2) - puzzles more my speed than with the original Schizm

Sentinel

Shivers - my second adventure game, still a favorite

Syberia (the first one) - I liked the automatons, the locations you visit, and the characters you meet in the first Syberia. Missed them in the second.

Tex Murphy games - Under a Killing Moon and Pandora Directive

Timelapse

Toonstruck - Christopher Lloyd was great. Too bad the game is so fussy about VESA and the timed puzzles are too dependent on computer speed (a 233 MHz computer and I had to use moslo)

Uru - severely flawed by the lack of a save option and long load times, but I liked being able to roam around the interesting gameworlds in real time.

Zork Grand Inquisitor - rivals DOTT as the funniest game I've played

Zork Nemesis - not like the other Zorks, but a good horror game

I'm working on my list. After I play a game, I categorize it into Excellent, great, good, or just glad I played it.
When I've just finished the game, I have my reasons for sorting them, but I find with time, some games made more of an impression than others. So, now as I look back, I'm doing some shuffling.

Colpet- very interesting list; generally, I like your taste. Was sort of interesting to see Black Dahlia stuck there in the top 10 surrounded almost totally by 1st person p&c puzzlers. Also, congratulations for putting Celtica in the top 50. Celtica is not a top 25 game but it has been very underrated and is almost never talked about. IMO it is a better game than a number of games people have been putting in their top 50!

The future ain't what it used to be!

Sir Dave, I just finished Celtica recently. I enjoyed playing it but didnt find myself as involved with the story as much as I was with dizzy Ariane

It *is* very aesthetically pleasing in a Surat kinda way. I especially enjoyed the Celtic interface around the edges, the towers, the small chapel. I thought I'd never get past that music box though.

SirDave, regarding Black Dahlia - it was the fist game I played with a partner. I'm not sure it would have ranked so high if I'd have played it alone . There were 3 of us playing it and it took about 3 months to get through it. I enjoyed discussing the game with the other two, and slowly savoring it rather than marathon gaming as I usually do. All in all, a great gaming experience.
As for Celtica, it is a difficult game to get, so many people may not have the chance to play it. It was the first really expensive game that I bought, and I'm glad for the experience. It was a very beautiful game. I managed to trade it for the Cassandra Galleries, another game I had a lot of fun with. It would have been in the next 10 on the list.

What is really great about these lists is seeing the variety of tastes and of games. So far, Lady Kestrel and Jenny100 seem to have the most in common with me. It would follow that some of their picks that I haven't considered before will be worth looking into - Nightlong, Nightfall and Derrat Sorceum (haven't ever heard of the last 2  ???).

Another nice thing about purely personal lists like this is that they are 100% bulletproof. They only reflect a single person's game playing experience to date and provide a general snapshot of the type of games he or she likes.

You can not tell if they disliked other games that didn't make the list because we don't know whether they even played them or not. But even if they did, it still comes down to personal taste, which simply isn't debatable.

Cheers,  Terry

Really? I've been interpretting a ranking of 40 or lower as meaning the person really didn't like the game much. Maybe people should also indicate roughly how many games they've played.

Nightfall and Derrat Sorcerum are Macintosh-only games.
That's probably why you haven't heard of them.

Good list though, if I made one I reckon it would include at least 30-35 of the games you have, in different positions of course. Is "Callahan's Crosstime Saloon" that great? I never played it.

Well it's not easy that's for sure, I've tried to make a top 50, trouble is I keep forgetting which ones either our son or daughter have borrowed of mine!  :
Wasn't sure whether to include remakes of games either but I have included both KQ remakes.

1.            Gabriel Knight The Beast Within
2.            GK3
3.            GK1
4            Tex Murphy - Pandora Directive
5              “        “         Overseer
6.               “        “           UAKM
7               "       "          Martian Memorandum
8            Monkey Is. 1
9            Monkey Is. 3
10.          Spycraft.
11.            Kings Quest 7 (yes, I know it’s not the most popular one, but have very fond memories of it as it was the first KQ I’d played.

12
iscworld Noir
13            Grim Fandango
14.            Wrath of the Gods
15            The Last Express
16            Black Dahlia
17.            Broken Sword 1
18.            Sherlock Holmes - Case of the Rose Tattoo
19             “           “         Case of the Serrated Scalpel
20             “            “              Secret of the Silver Earring
21            7th Guest
22            Syberia 1 (haven’t played 2 yet)
23.            Foul Play (perhaps not the usual sort of adventure game but very replayable.)
24.            Timelapse
25            Kings Quest 6
26            Kings Quest 5
27.            The Longest Journey
28.            Under a Steel Sky
29            Flight of the Amazon Queen
30            Amazon Guardians of Eden
31.            Runaway
32.            Post Mortem
33            Phantasmagoria, A Puzzle of the Flesh - bit gory, but heck, it's FMV which I love, so had to include it here.
34.            Legend of Kyrandia 1
35                “        “        “       2
36                 “        “         “      3
37.            Maniac Mansion (great to be able to play it properly without floppies!)
38.            Monkey Is. 2
39            Nancy Drew - Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake (I'm not a Nancy Drew fan really - her voice annoys me - but quite enjoyed this even though I'm not keen on Treasure in the Royal Tower so far).
40            Pharoahs Curse
41.
iscworld
42.            Freddy Pharkas
43.            Kings Quest 2 remake - supposing it’s O.K. to put remakes in here.
44.            Kings Quest 1     “
45            Conspiracy - sometimes called KGB.
46            Lure of the Temptress - probably shouldn’t include it as I have never quite
finished it - kept getting killed by the Beast, but still had really enjoyed it up to there.
47.            Zork Nemises
48.            Obsidian
49.            X Files (O.K. it may not be that good, but I still loved it).

50.          Other Worlds.    Well I'm going to stick my neck out a bit here, was originally going to say Obsidian but then felt that even though I haven't finished it (simply because I was lent a game that I felt should be played first), I was enjoying the game very much and thought that had I actually finished it, I probably would like it enough to include it.

So saying I'm putting Other Worlds as number 50 and Obsidian - well, I'd actually probably swap places with Ring 2 - which was in as no. 48 but on reflection I probably shouldn't have included anyway.

edited on No. 50.

Have to say that I started out as No. 1 as my favourite and went on from there. however after No. 22 the order is pretty much interchangeable.  Also apologise for the messy-looking list!

i said one of the best of 2004!
actually other worlds was among the games that i had trouble leaving out... when i made the list i came up with about 60-65 games that had to be there, but i had to remove some of them in order to make a top 50 - and it was very hard to do so mind you

and i haven't played 500 adventures (or have i?!
)

i've seen your top 10 list, but it would be very interesting to see your top 50... and yes, callahan's is that great! make it the next game you play! one of the most clever adventures i ever played, and so damn funny!

This is tricky, but like Colpet I've got a list on my PC that I use to keep track of what I own and use to rate my games when I finish them.

I was hesitant to do this because there are still a large number of highly regarded games that I've either not found yet, or got around to playing. Many of them I'm expecting to enjoy more than a lot of lower ranking games I'm listing here (for example - Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, the Tex Murphy games, Last Express, Obsidian, Runaway, Curse of Monkey Island, Bad Mojo etc.). Additionally, I'm playing Syberia now, and already it's high on my list.

Something else I've realised, contrary to what Terry said above about a personal list being fullproof, is that when you are newcomer to adventures some games seem better than they are because of your lack of experience. I wonder looking at my list whether some games I rated five stars are really better than x or y, just because I played them and enjoyed them without much perspective. I can only wonder that till I run out of games to play and get stuck into the replaying.

Anyway... my top 50 (@ Jan 2005)

50. Dracula Resurrection / The Last Sanctuary
49. Kyrandia 1
48. Phantasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of Flesh
47. Stupid Invaders
46. The Feeble Files
45. Kyrandia 2: The Hand of Fate
44. Dark Side of the Moon
43. Monty Python and the Meaning of Life
42. Shivers 2: Harvest of Souls
41. Nine: The Last Resort

40. Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred...
39. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
38. Kyrandia 3: Malcolm's Revenge
37. Shivers
36. Day of the Tentacle
35. Beneath a Steel Sky
34. Blade Runner
33. The Secret of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
32. Discworld
31. Zork Grand Inquisitor

30. Myst III: Exile
29. Ring: Legend of the Nibelungen
28. Morpheus
27. The Journeyman Project 2: Buried in Time
26. John Saul's Blackstone Chronicles
25. Faust: Seven Games of the Soul

But one assumes Dom that over time as each individual grows and experiences new things, he or she will revise their own personal list of favorites accordingly.

Besides, my comment was about third party criticism of another's personal favorites at any given time, not about changes that may occur to the opinions / preferences of the list maker.

Cheers,  Terry

P.S.

I noticed that The Longest Journey was not listed in your top 50 or amongst the prominent titles you have yet to play. Out of curiosity, have you played it? If so, what did you think about the game?

In the *review* you did.. but after completing Chapter 5, you sent me an e-mail which said that you and Valerie agree that OW is one of the best games you've ever played. I remember it very well because coming from two veterans it was a huge compliment.

actually other worlds was among the games that i had trouble leaving out.

Yeah yeah yeah.. you were just afraid that people would start flaming you again!

i've seen your top 10 list, but it would be very interesting to see your top 50...

50 is a bit much, some games that do not deserve being in a 'best games' list will inevitably be there.. but I might do it during a slow day at work. However, if you ever make a Top-100, count me out.

there are definately more than 50 games that deserve being in a best games list imo...

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

Only with incredible powers of perspective! I won't really know until I replay whether I was hasty in my early adoration.

Yes, I played it, and unfortunately it fell foul of the extreme hype that it had received on these boards. Way back when we had our last top 50 about two years ago (constructed from personal top 10 lists) it was a clear winner. I tracked it down after that and all the constant talk about it, and pretty much disliked it from start to finish. Such is the way with high expectations.

In brief... I thought it was extremely deritative, poorly constructed plot-wise, very badly scripted, unsure of it's target audience and obviously... agonisingly drawn out. I know it's much loved, but I had a very hard time finding anything to like. April Ryan is high on the list of characters I'd like to slap very hard.

Since you asked...

18. Lure Of The Temptress
42. The Pandora Directive
46. The Dagger Of Amon Ra
48. Personal Nightmare
49. Rise Of The Dragon

I believe the five games above have too many flaws to be considered "best".
If Other Worlds is really worse than "The Dagger of Amon Ra", perhaps I wasted three years of my life for nothing. [smiley=laughing.gif]

there are definately more than 50 games that deserve being in a best games list imo...

I still think 50 is too many. Maybe a "good' games list...
