What well-known, American-born singer, songwriter and guitarist wrote the words:  "It is better to burn out, than to fade away"?

that was bob dylan, wasn't it? then kurt cobain quoted that line in his suicide note

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

The answer is Kurt Cobain.  The lyrics were originally written by Neil Young, who is well-known, a singer, a songwriter and a guitarist, but is not American-born.  He was born in Canada.

The question is tricky because we always understand the phrase  "who wrote" to mean "who first wrote" or "who originated."  The fact of the matter is that Cobain did write those words shortly before he ended his life at the age of 27 by blowing his brains out with a shotgun, leaving a wife and a 1 year old daughter.

  Have a great weekend folks.

i thought it was a trick question, but i thought the trick was to make you answer kurt cobain, since most of the ppl would remember the line from his suicide! :

so the original was neil young, and not bob dylan after all...

Is that right, most people today associate that line with Kurt Cobain and not Neil Young?  I guess I am getting old.  :-/ Those people need to listen to Rust Never Sleeps by Neil Young and discover that grunge music started with him, not Cobain or Eddie Vedder.  He was "Rockin in the Free World" while wearing shorts down to his shins way before they were.

Neil Young also spoke through his lyrics with a folk/rock kind of sound and put the spotlight on issues here in the US in his songs, 'Southern Man' and 'Ohio'.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other screaming, "WOO HOO what a ride!!!

I remember the line most from the movie "Highlander" and the queen song Gimmie the Prize.

If you're born in Canada, you're still an american.

I think I know, each of them had a famous guest guitarist playing on them.

(sorry if this doesn't sound right, I need to go to sleep

I think your right.

Eddie Van Halen was on Beat it and Clapton was on the Beatles hit.

Not sure of the others

Right you are, Shany.  The guests were (a) Mark Knopfler, (b) Jerry Garcia, (c) Eddie Van Halen, and (d) Eric Clapton.   Sweet dreams.

Okay, to avoid missing a beat, I will toss out another one:    What do the following Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame bands all have in common:  Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Traffic and Led Zeppelin?

All four groups are "missing a beat" because their drummers have died.  Keith Moon (The Who) and John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) have been dead for many years.  Early this year, within a few days of each other, Spencer Dryden (Jefferson Airplane) and Jim Capaldi (Traffic) both passed away.

Let us not forget Joe Elliot from Def Leppard. He used that line at the begining of Rock of Ages on the Pyromania album.

They're all in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Deleted UserTraffic was a minor band with major talent.

Dave Mason came into his own as a solo act, as did Steve Winwood. But I can’t remember a single song by Traffic. Did they even have a hit?

And "Feelin' All Right"doesn't count in my book as Joe Cocker had the real hit with it. Dave Mason wrote it and Mason had a love/hate relationship with Traffic, quitting the band several times.
