The State of Adventure Gaming
By Randy Sluganski October
1999
Okay, class,
let's open our October issue of Yahoo! Internet Life Magazine to
page 54 and read aloud. Cindy, if you could pull yourself away from
Asheron's Call for a moment. Everyone pay attention now as
there will be a quiz later:
Thrill Seekers: Think the adventure genre is
ready to die? Well the gamers at Just Adventure+ (www.justadventure.com) disagree.
The authors of this resourceful Web zine track classic adventure games and eagerly
await their big comeback. Until then, the daily news, reviews, and rants will
keep you occupied. (Major thanks to author Marc Saltzman
for the wonderful plug!) Extra! Extra! Hot Off the Press! You Must Read
This! As
we are preparing to post this column, an email has arrived from an inside source
informing us that the November issue of PC Gamer is a must-read! Why? It
seems that their "Adventure Games are Dead" column struck a sour note
with hundreds of Just Adventure readers who decided to strike back with emails
and letters of their own. I even understand that Audrey Wells, beloved keeper
of our links page, is quoted prominently in the column! Forgive me for getting
mushy for a moment, but this is solid proof of what adventure gamers can do when
they band together! Enough of the negativism that emanates from the few loudmouths
on the newsgroups, we don't need 3D, we don't need action--we just need well-written,
intelligently produced stories. We now return you to your regularly scheduled
jerk.
Who'd Have Thunk It? Was
it only a year ago that Sierra was considered the source of all things adventure?
My how times have changed. Now deep in the heart of Cary, North Carolina, amidst
the quiet calm of the south sits the new matriarch of the adventure genre--SouthPeak
Interactive. With an upcoming release list that includes The Wild, Wild
West (two different version no less, one for the PC and one for the PSX),
Scooby Doo, Rent-A-Hero, Simon 3D and 20,000 Leagues, the future
is suddenly looking brighter for adventure gamers! You go SouthPeak!
We
Made Our Fortune off T&A If
SouthPeak is the mother of adventure games, then surely Eidos
is the father of the action/adventure genre. Not only is there talk of Lara going
pure adventure, but the majority of Eidos' new releases have incorporated more
and more elements of the adventure genre. Upcoming releases like Omikron, Soul
Reaver, Urban
Chaos, Thief Gold and Tomb
Raider: The Last Revelation are all must-haves for the action/adventure
fan. It does not hurt either that Eidos probably has the best marketing and publicity
department in the business or that their web site is chock full of downloads,
demos, wallpaper, screensavers and contests. The future of the action/adventure
genre is in good hands with Eidos.
And the Winner Is ... Our
new weekly "Quizlet" is an even bigger success than I had hoped for.
Though we appreciate your participation in the polls (and they are fun, aren't
they!), we would like to ask you to participate even more by offering us some
suggestions for future polls. And while you're at it, don't forget that if you
need to get something off your chest, then let loose in our Blast Off! For Adventure
column. Send your emails and suggestions to randy@justadventure.com. Parlez-Vous
Francais? For
four years I suffered through college French classes. "Someday," I said
to myself, "I will be glad I studied the French language!" Twenty years
have passed, and finally my college years now have some meaning as I receive daily
emails from French readers. But what has prompted this sudden influx of emails
from France? Is it an insidious plot by the French to take over Just Adventure?
Check out this new
website for yourself and the mystery will be solved.
Hey--They Can't
All Be Funny Some readers have emailed to ask if we have disposed of
the Blast from the Past reviews. Quite simply--no. The Blast reviews will continue
to be of adventure games that were originally released on CD format but are not
new releases. Tales from the DOS Side will concentrate on games that originally
appeared on 3.5 or 5.25-inch disks (remember those?) and most likely had limited
(if any at all) voices, music, and sound effects. We do not want to judge a game
that was released in the late 1980s or early 1990s by the same standards used
for today's multimedia extravaganzas. Got that? Good. Now what should we do about
those games that originally appeared on 3.5-inch disk and then had sound and music
added so they could be rereleased on the new CDformat? I feel a headache coming
on. The Nightmare Never Ends No
sooner do adventure games prepare for their resurgence than I receive the following
tidbit: Mary-Kate and Ashley, the Olsen Twins who starred in the television sitcom
Full House, are to star in their own adventure game. Now I personally have
nothing against the Olsen Twins--in fact my son Jacob thinks they are the neatest
thing since the Power Rangers--instead it is the company who plans on publishing
this license that strikes fear in me. That's right, Acclaim, the geniuses that
gave us such classics as the unbearable Maximum Carnage, the unplayable
Dragon Heart and the nauseating Shadow Man. This company only knows
one way to make games--bad and violent. Will we be seeing the Olsen Twins in G-strings,
toting semi-automatics and brandishing third-degree black belts? I doubt it, but
the truth may not be so far-fetched when we take Acclaim's track record into account.
The
Adventure Coalition As all of our readers are aware, The
Adventure Coalition is a collaborative collection of the best adventure gaming
sites on the Internet. We support each other and the genre through a web ring
and by providing links to each other's sites. We would like to welcome some new
members to the Coalition--Linda Shaw (perhaps the most well-know adventure gamer
on the Internet) and The Edge (the best adventure site in the UK) and respectfully
request that you visit all of the Coalition's sites. Remember, if they don't have
the AC seal of approval, then they ain't adventure! Our Monthly Cheap,
Shameless Attempt to Inflate Our Page Impressions Pamela
Anderson Lee, Brittney Spears, Viagra, Blair Witch Project, Lara Croft, sex, The
Sixth Sense, Pokemon, Beanie Babies, nude, Mark McGwire, Star Wars and Dreamcast.
