An Open Letter to Just Adventure + Readers

By Stuart Yoder

In the March 25 edition of Eye on Adventure, Randy makes the understatement of the year when he says, "It's a shame the American gaming public does not support the adventure genre as fervently as the overseas market." Randy has to be polite because he's an editor; I'll go the rest of the way. For the most part, the adventure gaming community is a bunch of whiny babies. We kick, scream, yell, bitch, moan, and generally throw a tantrum when we don't like an adventure game. I've had it! You're all in time-out! Go to your rooms! And no computer games until you learn to take the bad games along with the good ones.

Sierra didn't kill the adventure genre. Roberta Williams didn't kill the adventure genre. Editors of gaming magazines who prefer action games didn't kill the adventure genre. The adventure game market killed the adventure genre, and, surprise, surprise: that's you.

Am I saying that we should all buy every adventure game that comes out regardless if we think we'll like it or not? Yes. Where's your sense of loyalty? Sometimes you get a good game; sometimes you get a bad one. That's part of the adventure. And I don't want to hear about your money problems either, like "but, I don't have enough money to buy every game." If you spent as much time working and earning money as you do bitching about adventure games, you'd be able to afford any and every game that is produced. And besides, do you see a lot of adventure games to buy right now?

You can send me an e-mail if you want, but I'll only read it and then drag it to trash. Don't expect a response because I am angry with you.

If you're reading this, and you know it doesn't apply to you, thank you for supporting the adventure genre. If you're reading this, and you know that I'm talking directly about you, then relearn from an old adage: if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all.

Hey, I think that last statement applies to me! Oops. Sorry.
