Anacapri screenshot - click to enlargeAnacapri the Dream is the long-awaited sequel to the much-loved A Quiet Weekend in Capri – developed by the father & son team of Guy and Silvio Savarese - and this time the beautiful scenery is juxtaposed with a dark mystery; one that threatens to empty the town of its inhabitants if not solved pronto!

You play an expert in ancient civilizations who has been invited to uncover the whereabouts of a mysterious object known only at the Obsidian Disk. No one knows why it’s so dangerous, no one will tell you very much about it. Only that you are the island’s only hope and that you MUST find it.  This imperative gives a sense of urgency to your journey.  This is no simple stroll around a beautiful, sunlit island.  For this time, your explorations are accompanied by the knowledge that you must solve the mystery or else accept the loss of the islands lifeblood—its inhabitants.  The danger from this Disk has invaded the peace of the city so deeply that many are taking their belongings and leaving…for good. What has them so frightened they would leave their very homes, livelihoods and families?  That, my friend, is what you are there to find out.

Anacapri screenshot - click to enlargeAlthough you are mostly alone on this quest, you will encounter various people along the way; those that want to help and those that would rather you not complete your task.  It’s not always apparent who is who.  On top of that, some wonder how trustworthy YOU are and aren’t always willing to help.  Still, by and large you will find allies along your search and plenty of information to help you piece together the puzzle of Anacapri.

And, while you’re putting on your Sherlock Holmes deerskin cap, you can (and should) take the time to enjoy your walks around the island and your conversations with its inhabitants.  The views of the water, the sky, and the sunlit buildings are simply breathtaking, and if you’re like me and have never been to the Mediterranean, then you’re in for a large amount of eye candy as well as a lesson in the culture of the area.  On top of that, the people you meet are as real as you and I, and that gives the player the intense feeling of being truly IN this part of the world, truly meeting these people.  Everything has a level of reality that most adventure games can’t touch, and I think that will hook players instantly.

Anacapri screenshot - click to enlargeFor those who aren’t familiar with the previous Capri, this game is point-and-click, first person, and there are nine save slots.  The clickable areas are easy to spot and walking your way through this game is easier than any in game I’ve ever played.  My only quibble is that there are many beautiful areas (inside and out) that I would have loved to click on and look at more closely such as windows, bookcases and paintings, but you can only click on certain spots on the game screen, not the entire thing. Still, aside from that minor issue, the game was easy to play, enjoyable, and I had no issues with saving or crashing,

All in all, Anacapri is a fun, beautiful, intellectually stimulating game that will appeal to mystery-lovers and travel-buffs alike.  You get to bask in the sun, learn about Italy, solve a mystery, and never leave your home or your computer chair.  Not a bad deal for the price of a computer game, is it?
